Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

I'm not sure what you mean by "take over." They are not anywhere near the same player, as Holmes has 10 times the speed that Hall does. .

I didn't realize that Hall was timed at 43.4 in the 40 at the recent Pro Day. :wink2:

And to echo what Mili said, we have a 2006 Buckeyes Forecast thread, which is the preferred location for discussing who will play what position, etc.

I think we could have thrown more effectively last year vs. Texas if Troy would have played all of the Miami game..thus, this year we'll see how our all-new well-oiled balanced offense takes on Texas' loaded D. Now this was a no-brainer comment, but I was trying to make a Roy Hall comment while talking about the Texas game at the same time. I look forward to seeing him creating mismatches.

That Texas link was nice. Brought back some bad memories though. Texas won OUR national championships in 70 and 71, when we had the BEST team. The most heartbreaking loss to Meatchicken in 69, and then the Stanford upset in the 1971 Rose Bowl were the only two losses on the books for the 'Super Sophs'. Anyway, back to the thread.......

It looks like Texas didn't lose as much on D as we did, and it appears that they have some upperclass leadership there also. But we balance out with three significant losses on O (Mangold, Sims, Holmes), and have plenty of senior leadership. I see Gonzalez being the big play guy, with Hall being primary possession receiver, and Ginn getting doubled at every turn. Our O line can replace what was lost, just as Texas' D can replace what's lost.

Where it'll be interesting is our revamped D (9 new players) and Texas' O (7 new players). That will be where the rubber meets the road. Unless D'Andrea asserts himself as a vocal leader (I don't see Pitcock or the other senior D linemen as 'vocal') I don't readily see where the upperclass leadership is going to come from.

That said, I think we've got more in the pipeline than Texas does in the missing holes.

Buckeyes in a romp 27-7.

:oh: :banger: :io:

there is a certain tradition missing from this years thread that was present last year.

The GOTP has made its triumphant return. Good job, gregorylee.

That is one way to ensure this thread gets to 7000+ posts.

Folks, we need to be dedicated this time. None of this 5 pages without a half naked chick business that happened last year.
With eveyone's help, this will indeed be the greatest thread of all time. Who's with me?

****that is, if posting that many pictures doesn't cause bandwidth issues. osugrad?

texasfight06, here is the detailed answer about our WRs, from my perspective.

Summary:
Holmes is a loss, but Ginn was an athlete with jitters against Texas. Smith also was still rusty, and has also improved tremendously. If Pittman/Wells can provide a strong running game, it will also ease the pressure on the Holmes-less WR corps. Gonzo will be our #2, but remain in the slot in spread formations. Hall provides size mismatches, and the coaches feel he will move beyond steady this year. Dukes is a Holmes clone talent-wise (probably comparable to the 2003 holmes), and robiskie is a promising SE that i feel will get limited PT (in Austin) if Hall lives up to expectation.

With out doing much research I would be willing to bet that our repective stockpiles are probably pretty close to equal

I'd agree with this statement. And most of the research that could be done is fairly meaningless. Things like looking up recruiting ratings, speculating on guys returning after being injured, and quoting some stats that backups accumulated in blowouts.

OSU's "new" group is a bit of a misnomer. We cannot match last year's unit (not that early anyway), but we are not as raw as advertised. There is an extra LBer in this list, tho mDa still has to prove he can stay healthy.

OSU's returning starters:
DE Jay Richardson (senior)
DT Quinn Pitcock (senior, top-5/10 DT in 06 imo)

OSU's experienced new starters:
DE Lawrence Wilson (soph, played early in our DL rotation)
LB James Laurinaitis (soph, started vs UM and ND, solid)
CB Malcolm Jenkins (soph, didn't enroll early, nickelback from game 1, started a few games)
FS Brandon Mitchell (5th year senior, part-time starter the last two years)
LB Mike D'Andrea (5th year senior, #1 LB in HS w/ incredible measurables, started ahead of Schlegel in 04 before injury, may become a rush end like carp on passing downs)
DT David Patterson (senior, DT-sized DE, started at DE at end of season, will likely slide inside... probable upgrade from Green in 05)

OSU's inexperienced new starters:
LB Larry Grant (5-star juco, first ever brought in by Tress, expected to contribute immediately)
LB Marcus Freeman (coaches planned for major PT at LB along with the other three last year before early injury)
CB Andre Amos (rave reviews from coaches, almost burned his RS very late vs NW when Ashton was playing hurt)
SS Jamario O'Neal (#3 rated CB, ST exp, faster/taller Whitner in potential)
NB Kurt Coleman (elite prospect, true frosh, enrolling early, favored to win the NB position)

Reserves:
DE Doug Worthington (5-star #3 de in 05)
DE Robert Rose (5-star frosh, tore up the Army AA game)
LB One of the above 4 (that doesn't make the lineup)
LB John Kerr (B10 leading tackler as a frosh at IU, transferred, RS frosh, multi-year backup)
LB Chad Hoobler (4-star junior, also working out in Carp-rushLB role)
LB Top-notch frosh (Homan, Johnson, Gibson, Moeller)
FS Nick Patterson/Devon Lyons (will push for FS starting position)
DB Sirjo Welch (ST animal, incredible gunner in 04, in doghouse vs Texas, fast... great tackler)
DB Grant Schwartz (10.7 100m at 210+ lbs, major sleeper prospect, huge buckeye lean scared off most other schools)

That would be 4 new players on the Texas offense, QB, TE, LT, & RG. I'm not concerned about the last three.

I have concerns about RG and of course QB. My concerns with RG are not all that large but they are there....TE would be next in line i guess but by all accounts that i have heard Jerimichel(sp?) is a playmaking fool so im not that scared. LT is tony hills and looks like he may be an upgrade over all american John Scott

I would assume that xray has no problem looking someone in the eye and making the statement he did
