Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Wow, everyone needs to lay back for a second. All of this stuff regarding scholarship revoking, dismissed from the team, continuing legal trouble, etc is nothing but unsubstantiated fluff. There are surely some reasons for people to be skeptical of his future as a Longhorn football player, however, nothing close to these conclusions has been substantiated.

The fact is, Ramonce is currently enrolled in summer classes at UT, has gotten his academics squared away from the spring semester which was why he did not participate to begin with, and is thoroughly participating in the summer workout program that is exclusive to members of the Longhorns' football team. Now, from all that, combined with the indications that his legal charges will be dropped and squared away, where do people get off saying things like he will not be playing football for Texas again? To say that requires a deliberate ignorance from the reality of the situation, and does nothing to support either Ramonce or Mack Brown's ability to fairly, and independently handle this situation. One thing's for sure, is that no one can accuse Mack Brown of not being a player-first coach who will do the right thing for the player and team regardless of outside speculation, and this should be no different. I for one do not know if Ramonce will being playing for Texas ever again, however, at this point, I'd say that scenerio is just as likely to happen as to not.

Listen, my friend! I guess I should have said "I read" instead of "I heard". It was on all the major websites when the story first broke. Brown was quoted.

I tried to find a link for you, but it's too old. Before you run around shooting your mouth off and calling people that don't agree with you "ignorant", do your damned homework.

Actually, the websites said that he had already been excused from the team for the spring so he could focus on academics. The only related quote I ever saw from Mack Brown simply said that he would remain excused from the team at least until the case was resolved.

There are some post on the orangeblood forum that said he was seen participating in 7 on 7 drills. Im not sure, but I don't think Voluntary 7 on 7 drills are governd by the athletic dept., if this were the case Im sure the Austin media would be all over it.

I believe I provided factual information with my statements regarding Ramonce's enrollment in classes, participation with the team, etc that I would expect you to agree is homework, however, your comments in light of this suggest there is more to it?

Despite your best efforts, you provided no data regarding what you "heard" or what you "thought" on the matter, which contradicts your suggestion to "do your homework" quite nicely. However, if its the press conference that Mack Brown gave in response to the RT allegtions that you're referring to, then yes, I am correct in saying that you are wrong about Mack's quotations. The quote is:

"We are aware of this recent situation and will follow it as the legal system runs its course. At this time, we will not consider reinstating him to the team," Brown said.

That is to say, we are letting the legal system tell us whats what, and before that time, we will not consider allowing him back among the team functions that he was excused from in order to focus on academics. Very conditional, very non-binding. How do you get anything regarding scholarship assesment out of that? I see how it could be construed that way if you knew nothing regarding the rest of the situation, but to do that would be what I call "deliberately ignorant" of some important aspects of the case.

Texas won the national championship last year. The media has placed their bulls-eye on Texas. Until the first game of the season, we'll hear and see stories about all kinds of crazy crap. "Texas offensive lineman, Joe McDumppants, has been accused of not helping a little old lady across the street."

I'm not going to pay much attention to the stories. We went through the same thing before the 2003 season.

Good call Zurp.

The media's decision-making process when it comes to which story/program to cover can be compared to the "whack-a-mole" game. Whenever someone sticks their head above the crowd, the media go after them with their sledge hammers. They went after FSU and blew their problems out of proportion. They went after us. They go after everybody.

USC has gotten a bit of a pass for reasons that are a topic of hot debate on several other threads, but the general trend remains the same.

Those who follow programs with the temerity to rise above mediocrity should stick together. FSU fans were quick to jump all over me when I first moved to Tallahassee in 2003; but like any other group of normal people, they quickly came over to my side when I pointed out the parallels in our situation.

And yes, I meant back-cut boa, or ostrich, or some other Lucchese (sp?) specialty, not the bullhide working boots. Never could fit my size 13s into them with ANY sort of comfort. Preferred deck shoes and desert boots.

Can't wait. I'll stay ensconced in Central California, but will envy those in the stands. 6th Street used to be a wonderful way to walk back to the hotel - pub by pub, listening to the varied music offerings, and trying the various tequila offerings also. Has the food in the Oilman's club maintained the high level of excellence? (Back in 1990)

:gobucks3: :osu4: :banger: Go Bucks!

Sorry it took so long to respond, I don't post on weekends.

Glad you had a good time in Austin. And yeah Lucchese makes some good boots. Or as I like to call them, luck-cheeses.

Oilman's club........in Austin? I've been to the one in Houston, but I had no idea there was/is one in Austin. Where abouts was that?

A question regaurding your projected starter or tentative starter at RC, Antonio Smith. Is he a 5th yr sr. walkon? Nothing wrong with that, it's just that for a 5th yr guy, he has had very little playing time. I can see where a guy who practices hard every day for four years and knows the defense might get rewarded for his hard work.

I guess my question is , will Antonio Smith be the starter against Texas, or is Tressel just giving him his props during the summer and fall practice and encouraging the younger players to kick it up a notch before the season starts. Not that Smiths is not a good player, but the other DB's physically look more gifted.

I think your assessment is accurate. Smith is a steady tackler and a hard worker, but lacks the ideal height/speed to hold off a rising star at Field Corner - ie cover corner in OSU's system. Washington, Amos, Schwartz, Welch? will be in the mix for the other corner position (opposite Jenkins).

Re: Taylor I have to point out that participation in the voluntary workouts is not restricted to current players and/or students. A couple examples are that Roy Williams practiced with them last year while getting ready to play with Detroit and the entire Texas State team would come up a couple times a week. That probably had a lot to do with Texas State's playoff run last year.

The latest Tru-Orange update reports that there is still a chance that Taylor could be reinstated. He is on schedule to complete his coursework.

As for the possession charge, his only hope at this point is that the charges get dropped, most likely due to lack of evidence over whose it was. At least, that is what his attorney is angling for. The problem reportedly is (unofficially) that the real owner is on probabtion and doesn't want to do hard time just to get his friend off the hook.

I'm not at all optimistic that he ever plays for UT again.

Yeah Taylor is facing some pretty serious charges I'd be in all honesty very surprised if he get's off the hook for this one. As for Antonio Smith, He's the only one I'm actualy a bit concerned about. I mean a 5'9" corner isn't your every day starters height. I'm not concerned about his tackling ability, and I'm sure he definatly deserves to start. With that being said don't be surprised if you see Andre Amos (6'0") or Donald Washington (6'1") opposite of Jenkins most of the time. Both Amos/Washington have been rumored to have some serious wheels too!! I think someone said amos ran in the 4.3's, and the same goes for Washington (of course they're prolly inflated numbers). GO BUCKS!

I think CB height is overrated provided he has a 40 inch vertical to make up for it. The difference between a CB tipping a ball away and WR making a reception is around 4 inches in hand position. Its only a real problem against 6-4 guys with close to 40 inch verticals like Sweed and Finley, but it seldom comes into play and you won't face many of those at the collegiate level.

Oilman's Club

EngineerHorn, you are correct. Oilman's Club (or some such name) was in Dallas. Try the Engineer's Club in Austin. Great meal, private room. All in all had a good time every time visited Austin (back in the 80's). Read that the famous supermarket (all natural food, I believe) closed in Austin. Kinda Californian in a way.

So much for meals and ladies in short cut-offs. Back to college football!

Athlon & Street&Smith has very high regard for the UT O-Line. Just as fittingly so, they also have a high regard for the OSU D-Line. If UT wins the battle of the trenches, by opening up gapping holes, or taking out our new LBs, then UT has a chance to score. UT's wide-outs are quite good, and OSU's DBs are very raw. I could probably toss some completions with enough time........without the time, if our D-line can contain the blockers, then I think our LBs will rush and sack the QB enough that we win.

OSU's offense will (in my opinion), stutter alittle against UT (after a nice win at Northern Illinois), but then settle. UT will have some defensive success (several early 3-and-outs), and then we'll have some sustained drives. If Ginn or Gonzo breaks one, then we'll settle down to a pound-it-out running game. Pitt and new Wells will get some good yardage, and the Buckeyes will win a tight one. Not because we cannot score, but because Tressel will button up the offense per his usual. Can't see him betting a NC opportunity on the second game by opening up the offense. Troy Smith will be the wild card, whether he runs for a bunch, or suckers the UT DBs and zings a pass to Ginn, Gonzo or Hall. Not too many freshmen are going to see the field in this game. Tress will plan a conservative game plan.....

OSU 24 - UT 10

I think that if the linebackers are rushing the QB, then there will be a lot of completions to UTs TEs and RBs.

If I were facing Texas I would leave the rush to the DL until the young QBs prove they can hit targets in coverage, although maybe mix in a zone blitz or three given some of the fast DEs you have.
