Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Actually recently in ESPN the Mag I read in article where some players were timed in the 30 yrd Dash with and without the Football. They were actually faster with the football. The players wouldn't be named and wouldn't run the 40 because they were worried about bad times hurting their value.

He was just compiling reported times. Give him a break.
I'm asking him to not just spew statistics... and actually consider them logically. Were it summer 2004, I would not throw out Maurice Hall's HS 40 time given his knee injuries. I think xray's capable of defending himself, btw.

sounds like these are bad sprinters (you might want to consider the source too). Should sprinters start carrying footballs in the 60 yard dash?
Two passing TD's against Texas would be a DREAM game for T. Smith. Keep Dreaming.
like his 1 TD when playing half of the game? Nice to see the charade is over, and you're back to predicting a blowout.
I think it is maybe 5 or 6, that is why as classified soem as possibles, since I don't believe all those sub 4.4 numbers.

Someone asked about Selvin, and he was definitely a lot slower last year, as he was too heavy and his ankle wasn't healed. His ankle is well now and he is about 10 pounds lighter so he is closer to his freshman speed. However, I never thought of him as a sub 4.4 guy, and still don't.
gotcha, thanks for the clarification.

You honestly think that Texas has anywhere close to 12 players that run sub-4.4's? :shake:

Malcolm actually ran about the same distance since Pittman was running diagonally across the field while Jenkins was running straight. Jenkins also didn't have a ball in his hands, which is an advantage. Holding a ball really messes with running technique.

Jenkins was well behind Pittman yard-line-wise...factor in the extra distance due to the angle, and the distance he made up is astonding. Not to mention the fact that Pittman was already at full speed when Jenkins had to react and then accelerate to catch Pittman.

so you honestly think the oft-injured young can run a sub-4.4?

OSU always has disciplined corners, and the OSU DBs will probably be faster. I seriously doubt the QBs will be throwing picture perfect passes with regularity... so how much of a difference will this supposed 4.4 speed make?

Route running, athleticism in the air, toughness will result in more catches than track times.

to answer your question...no i don't think that selvin can run a sub 4.4 any more. I think that could when that time was published....and i agree that there is much more to football than track times.

edit: had been adressed

Even considering the source its not like there's definitive evidence that carrying a football makes you slower. I am not even saying what ESPN said is definitive. Just so I'm clear. It would be conventional wisdom to assume the former, granted.

I'm pretty sure that virtually every track coach in the world would disagree. Arm movement is a critical part of running technique. That said, football players may run with a greater sense of urgency when the ball is in their hands.

I apologize for those who would like to see more commentary, but I felt the post was already pretty long. I will be happy to address any questions about the any of the players or their data.

For example, I almost put Ray Small in the possibly sub 4.4 category, due to his track speed, but he didn't have a sub 4.4 time in any of the recruiting services, so I thought I would wait and see. As I understand it he is also waiting on a test score.

S. Holmes had the same No. of TD receptions last year (11) as your ENTIRE receiving group did, and last I checked, He's gone. T. Ginn is great when he dosen't have a CB with speed that matches his to cover him, unfortunately for tOSU, Texas has 3 that can cover him man to man.
