Game Thread Game Three: #1 Ohio State 37, Cincinnati 7 (9/16/06)

There were plenty of times where we could have stopped Young and Charles in the backfield, but they slipped away. Everytime Charles bounced to the outside, then cut back in and got behind one of his linemen, we should have stopped him there, but he would tear off a good 10+ yards almost every time. Our defensive line needs to recognize this and our linebackers need to fill that hole a lot faster.

The thing that worries me most is the quick outs to a wideout, sweeps and options. McCoy was just throwing to his receivers on the line of scrimmage and they were getting a good 5 yards because our CBs were giving them space. I wondered why Texas stopped running these plays because although they weren't breaking off big chunks of yardage, they were solid plays that got them closer to our endzone. We started to notice this later in the game, but their first two drives, the quick outs were killing us.

That's a good read by TX. Especially on 1st down, it's an easy 5 or 6 yards and sets up 2nd and short.
Don't expect us to play 8-10 yards off the line so often against UC. Or expect us to show a similar formation and then switch out of it before the snap.

Regarding the running success - combination of 2 VERY good RBs running very hard, and poor tackling. The tackling issue will be addressed. I remember a similar performance in '04 when we lost to Northwestern.

Since i cant see this game(damn it) i cant wait to sit by the computer and watch us rock this team. If Pitt hung 30 points on this team i cant wait to see what we do.
I'd expect something similar to NIU...lot of points fairly quickly followed by ball control after the half. JT won't run up the score, especially on D'Antonio and his boys.

I agree. Tressell won't run up the score on D'Atonio. One site has Ohio State as a 30 point favorite.

CINCINNATI +30
OHIO STATE -30

I really wouldn't expect Ohio State to win by that many.

ok im still savoring the texas win , but I am going to see Cinci. I know they lost to pitt. So all i want is a good solid game with more improvement in all aspects. The punting doesnt need improving haha :)

Does anybody want to start a V-Bet on play calling? If we are in the redzone and empty the backfield I bet the play is going to be a quarterback draw. We ran that against NIU and TX and all of last year. I bet D'Antonio will know how to scout it. Lord knows that NIU and TX saw it coming from a mile away.

the rotation on d won't go away, but it will be reduced significantly. we wouldn't have rotated nearly as much against texas had jt not be so concerned over the heat and humidity.

i think texas shifted their play calling from what (we all believed to be) working because well, according to the score board it wasn't. i think mack got frustrated with the lack of success point wise so he experimented with other stuff.

I would think the rotation will continue pretty heavy this week and we'll see it reduced quite a bit for conference play vs. Penn State next week. I don't think it would have been so much against Texas if not for the weather conditions, however I was glad to see a lot of rotation and lots of guys getting big game experience.

I agree with NFBuck, jump out to an early lead and shut it down, milk the clock and get to Penn State. A win is always a win, but here's hoping it comes easier than 2002.

I'd think the starters would be out after the 1st half, possibly the first quarter. I also wouldn't expect a blow out. If there's one thing Tressel has, it's respect for his fellow coaches. He invited the coach that he replaced to come to Austin last week and ride with the team on the team bus, what could be more respectful than that? Probably the only reason he didn't do it earlier was to avoid any emotions with some of Cooper's former players, but they're all gone now. He surely won't take a "that'll show you" approach with D'Antonio because of this ultimate respect for his peers.

Cooper and Earl Bruce both have an Emeritus Coach's Office in the new Woody Hayes Facility.
