Game Thread: Louisiana Tech 40, Fresno State 28 (final)

Cal moved down because Mack cried to the coaches (well, to the extent that pollsters moved Cal down to give Texas a shot)

I've known Oregon won't be involved since 21 posted it in the mill.. Oregon fans don't know it, and Oregon officials (and Pac 10 officials) will still lobby as best they can.

my brain is on completely backwards today. I am going to sleep on my head, in hopes that what little brain capacity is left will be assisted by the massive amounts of blood rushing downwards.

How's that Liberty Bowl bid Fresno got 3 weeks ago looking right about now? Unfortunately, that leaves a WAC champion (Nevada) perhaps not getting a bid, but more than likely they'll go to Hawaii, so Louisiana Tech, who just tied for 3rd with Fresno and beat Fresno, will probably not get a bid anywhere.

It will impact on their SOS, Josh, so don't stay inverted too long. My best guess is...
  • Oregon's SOS will probably drop from #31 in the Sagarin's to #34 or #35.
  • Fresno State will probably drop to about #45 in the Sagarin's, below Nebraska and Stanford but still a bit above Miami (Ohio).
  • Oregon loses the ability to claim that it beat a quality team. Losing to Nevada and Louisiana Tech makes sure everyone knows you are not a quality team.
  • In sum, it will probably affect Oregon's BCS score by dropping it as far as .72, which is inconsequential.
The major benefit of Fresno State's poor play the last few weeks is to deflate the arguments some visiting posters on BP have been making that equated Fresno State with Texas on our schedule. It is now very, very clear that they are what we thought they were - a mid-major very comparable to Miami (Ohio).

If you are a USC fan, given your performance against Fresno State and Oregon, you may now lose some sleep praying that Texas loses today.

Do you really think the Fiesta committee is hanging a multi-million dollar decision on how some team Oregon played over 2 months ago is doing tonight?

No.

I think the Fiesta Committee is hanging a multi-million dollar decision on which game the people want to see.

The people want to see OSU v ND. Ohio State is better than Oregon.

If you want to dispute the first point, you'll get the sympathy that a certifiably insane person deserves. If you want to dispute the second point, fine. No one outside of the Pac-10 agrees with you, but fine. I live in Tallahassee, and the people here are hoping for an OSU-VaTech matchup in the Orange Bowl because they want the ACC champion to play the best possible team. When I ask about Oregon, they laugh. (and no, they don't think their Seminoles have a prayer today)

Would Oregon have lost to Texas and PSU if they'd played them? Everyone outside of the Pac-10 believes they would have been destroyed.

So placing importance on the number of losses rewards a team for what, scheduling Houston instead of Texas?

With respect to USC methomps, your opinion is a welcome addition to the board. With respect to Oregon, your arguments are worthless and weak. OSU is the better team, as has been demonstrated over and over. You have not successfully disputed any of the statistical arguments; you simply pull one sentence out of the analysis and quibble over words.

But this is beside the point. OSU is the better draw, and the Fiesta Committee knows it. The ONLY thing Oregon has going for them right now is that OSU has won two of the last three Fiesta Bowls. Oregon should beat that drum for the next 24 hours, because it's their only argument that has garnered any attention at all from the committee. In the end, it won't matter. A third win in four years by the same team might be less interesting to the people of Tempe and the Phoenix metro area, but money is money and the Fiesta will choose with their wallet.

Good morning.

Why would I dispute the first point? It was the whole point of my question that you quoted. That is exactly what I was getting at. And why would I dispute the second point when I agree with it?

Some of you guys continue to light the torches at the sight of shadows. Put down the pitchforks.

Maybe my arguments have been weak because I've never argued that Oregon deserves in over tOSU. I welcome you to go back through all the threads (this one, the "Pac Overrated?" thread, the "BCS chances" thread, and the thread with Oregon in the title) and find one post where I've ever said Oregon deserves a bid over tOSU or tOSU doesn't deserve a bid.

You guys have immeresed yourselves so much into this "debate" and whipped yourselves into such a frenzy that you misinterpret any argument that doesn't start with "Oregon doesn't deserve any kind of bowl, period" as a threat or an argument against tOSU.

Of course I quibble over one sentence. That sentence often accuses me of taking a position I've never taken and don't even believe.
