Game Thread Game Ten: Ohio State 38, Wisconsin 17 (final)

Anyone who doesn't think that Tressel is going to let loose the dogs of hell against the team that disrespected our field after our last game with them needs to look at the scores of the three games we've played against Northwestern since they upset us in 2004: 48-7, 54-10, 58-7 (average score 53-8). They are the only team against whom we've consistently run up the score. Wisconsin will be the second...

We didn't run up the score this year against them. 2nd string was in as of halfway through the 1st quarter, and 3rd string came in in the 2nd. During the 4th quarter, I think that was our scout team because I didn't recognize a single player. Northwestern just couldn't stop us.

By definition OSU can not get a solid win against a good opponent (unless they are from the SEC.)

Either OSU will lose or barely escape - in which case Wisky will prove to be our "first real test", or we will run away with it, in which case Wisky will prove to be yet another overrated Big Ten team.

Ohio State's Offense and Wisconsin's Defense are both coming off of their best game of the season. So who will win this supposed clash of the titans? (or is it?)

To answer that question, you first have to answer the deeper question; from whence did those superlative performances come?

For Ohio State, it was a chronic need for redemption (01/08/07) combined with an acute need for redemption (last trip to H.V.).

For Wisconsin, it is what I'll call "The Duke Effect".
The Duke Effect is what happens when you play a team that you should beat, and whom you do beat in some respects, but to whom you give the game on silly mistakes. This happened to Northwestern against (you guessed it) Duke, and the emotional let down the following week against the Buckeyes was predictable.

Indiana suffered The Duke Effect against Penn State. They did everything necessary to beat the Nittany Lions (at home, like NW v Duke) and then went on to lay an egg the following week (on the road, like NW v OSU). Wisconsin was the beneficiary.
So now that we have established the reason behind each team's performance of last week; let's see if those same reasons are in effect for each team this week.

For Ohio State:
  • Chronic need for redemption: check
  • Acute need for redemption: oh, yeah
For Wisconsin:
Unfortunately for the Badgers, The Duke Effect often infects the opposing team with something we can call The Northwestern Effect. After blasting the already emotionally flattened Wildcats at home, Ohio State went on the road and had an absolute head-scratcher of a first-half (for the most part). It seemed that after facing the lower-than-whale-shit purple gang, it took them awhile to adjust to the sky-high Gophers.

The same can be expected of Bucky against the Bucks. After hosting a Hoosier squad that had just suffered a demoralizing home loss that was emotionally equivalent to Northwestern's pratfall against Duke, the Badgers are coming to the 'Shoe where the Bucks are champing at the bit to smack them in the mouth. It will take them at least a half to adjust.
By then, it will be too late.

Yep.

Unless we walk off the Superdome carpet with a solid win over LSU we "stole" a NC with our schedule.

Yes, because we all know that Kentucky, Vandy and South Carolina doing well is a sign that the SEC is incredible. Meanwhile, any showing by Indiana and/or Illinois speaks volumes as to the weakness of the Big Ten.

UW football: Badgers aim to handle, limit crowd noise better this time

Jim Polzin ? 11/01/2007 7:32 am
The University of Wisconsin football team's trip to Happy Valley last month was a textbook example of what not to do when you're a visiting team hoping to subdue a rowdy crowd.
Disaster struck on the Badgers' first play of scrimmage when tailback P.J. Hill fumbled at the UW 12-yard line. The Nittany Lions recovered and needed just three plays to score a touchdown and take a lead they'd never relinquish.
Just like that, any chance of making crowd noise a non-factor at one of the Big Ten Conference's loudest venues was gone. The Penn State supporters among the nearly 110,000 fans at Beaver Stadium ended up making life miserable on senior quarterback Tyler Donovan and the rest of the UW offense at times during the Nittany Lions' 38-7 victory.
The same scenario could play out Saturday at Ohio Stadium if the Badgers (7-2, 3-2 Big Ten) come out of the gates slowly against the top-ranked Buckeyes (9-0, 5-0), who have won 17 straight at home.
"If you let it," Donovan said, "then I think that's when it will rattle you."

Motivation to beat the Badgers? - yes

Revenge by Tressel? - he's not saying

Is the "Wizard of Oz" seeding the players with information about previous losses ? - yes

Is he a little bit pissed ? - IMO he is showing restraint but never forgot the dancing at midfield in 2004.

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : Revenge factor difficult to deny

These guys need to lose and lose bad - the most humiliating, overwhelming, crushing, one-sided beat down ever. Defeat them so that they will never want to return to Ohio. Put them in their place and end this curse. Return the Badgers to the holes and spank them within inches of their life.

Anyone getting pumped about the game?

If we think Jim Tressel will ease up on them at all even in the last seconds of the fourth quarter, think twice. He may be subdued and restrained but he wants their asses hung out to dry. We do it this Saturday with the opening drive and don't let up until 60 minutes has passed.

:oh:

Like I said in another thread; this game is the:osu:biggrin:'s first shut out of the season.

These guys come out like crazed dogs and don't stop for 60 minutes. A defensive score and a special teams score or two during this one makes it the biggest no brainer in the history of earth.

31-0 at the half and Boeckman takes the first posession of 2nd half down the field with a mixture of mid-range passes and bruising runs by Beanie to make it 38-0.... we bring in the 2nd and 3rd string 45-0 even 52-0 isn't unrealistic.

Motivation? yeah JT's got plenty of that.

First real test my ass.:io:

without PJ I dont see much of another threat from Wisky; they dont have the receivers to stretch our secondary.... so as long asour DL line stays sharp, the LB's are free to roam, why not send in the heat at TD every chance?

Bring in a safety; let them know no team leaves the shoe unpunished, especially carrying a winning record at home against us.

to support the Big Ten and tOSU. How much more does it cost? DirecTV folks gave me BTN and NFL network as a part of their $39.99 line up. No extra charge. It didn't cost me anything. Ofcourse they got my business instead of TW.

To me it seems the Big 10 wants more profit. The BTN wants to charge Time Warner 1.10$ extra per customer, yet not let Tim Warner charge extra. Time Warner is really greedy as well because that really isn't a staggering number but they don't want to charge everyone that fee. So a better statement is that I hate them both. I watched OSU play every Saturday without them and now I have to go elsewhere for 4 games a year? That's bs and greed on both parties really...bottom line is I get to watch the game but not from the comfort of my home. I also had to cancel the OSU vs. Wisky party at my house and shift it to Frickers. Oh well, the restaurants with DirecTV love it.

Anyways, pre-game thoughts: I think Wisconsin is going to test our run D. I'm still not convinced we have a stellar enough of an interior DL to stop a team that can run the ball. However, I think we key on the run and that will certainly help. Someone else said this and I agree...Abdallah has looked pretty good from what I can tell. Against the spread, I like having Worthington in at DT. Against a power run attack though I would like to see Denlinger and Abdallah starting, with Larimore rotating in and Worthington on third downs. On offense I see no real problems. Beanie should have a superb day and is looking better every game. I think we are just beginning to see his potential. Boeckman should also have a field day throwing to Robiskie, Hartline, and Small. Our OL looks awesome in pass protection...Barton and Boone made Maurice Evans look like a schoolgirl. Boone looks awesome thus far, as well as Barton and I don't see Wisconsin getting pressure on Boeckman. I say OSU by 17 but Wisconsin always seems to give us trouble. This year may be an exception but I could see them giving us some trouble just because of simply who they are. When you have the #1 mark on you, you are going to get everyones best shot. Can't wait for the game though and go Bucks!

I simply meant that when we last played them, they didn't have the ability to even stop our reserves. I don't count it as running up the score if the starters aren't on the field. That's just a lack of execution on the opposing team.
