Game Thread Game Six: Ohio State 35, Michigan State 24 (final)

haha look I'm not hear trying to piss anyone off but running up the middle requires ZERO speed to contain. Now off tackle and options yes that could work but at the same time this is D-I football and even though they might be slow, running a 4.8 or 4.9 at 300 pounds ain't bad. So they might be slow but I doubt they're just taking up space. This is also were the week of preperation can come into play for their D-line as well. If they put themselves in good position to make a play you can have all the speed you want they're just going to make plays.

I know speed kills and thats something OSU definatly has an advantage in, but michigan state trys to offset any speed with screens quick passes and things of that nature. I'm not trying to talk up Michigan State, but they do impress me with how they are able to score points.

You don't he'll be pissed because of the loss? He played the best game of his career at home against a team from up north a week after a tough 7-point night road loss. I think lightning strikes twice...

I thought he would be pissed off / motivated for every game this season following the close loss to UT. I know you can't keep it up over the course of the season but you can use it to motivate you.

The problem I am having is that we have heard TS is the emotional leader on this team but I don't see it on the field. I see it in AP, I see it in some of the OL, I see it in each and every D player and I REALLY see it in SA....although it's sometimes subtle.

I take it that "AP" is Antonio Pittman, but who is "SA"?

gotta be holmes. what is it that you see in the other guys that you don't see in TS? I see a lot of emotions that are contained inside a struggling QBs body. He may not have 'it', but I don't think it's for a lack of emotion.

From the stands or via the C satellite I watch the benches. In between series I see the guys pumping each other up but I don't recall seeing that from Troy. In between plays you see little things like Holmes smacking some chirping DB upside his helmet. Or you see AP pumping his fists. Or a lineman calling out his teammates.

Of course, these are manifestations of emotions. TS might not be that kind of guy...can't argue with that. But I wonder why we hear that the players respond to him over Zwick and that he is a leader. Does it all happen in practice maybe?

To be honest, I just hope the boo birds don't come out on Saturday. On campus this week, it's been tough trying to find anyone that doesn't want someone fired, cut, or kicked off the team. We had a rather lengthy discussion in our poli sci class when someone blurted out "Tressel should be fired!" The prof didn't go here, so he didn't have huge ties to the football team, but nonetheless is a huge sports fan. First thing out of his mouth was "I'm not even a fan and that game on Saturday was painful to watch. One thing I just don't get about you Buckeye fans is you find a million ways to rip on your own team, yet you never give credit to the team that beat you." I gotta agree with the guy. Sometimes we're way too fanatical for our own good.

I agree with you and I certainly won't be one of them, but I think the boo birds will be out early at the MSU game this weekend. Judging by the call-in shows here this week, there's a lot of bitter people out there and I don't see the crowd having much patience with any lack of production by our offense against MSU. It's sad, though, and I hope I'm wrong.

UGA, I'm wondering if he's one of those other manifestations you mentioned. He seems to have had a number of famous speeches in a short span. He wants to run over any defender that he meets in the open field. Every time he gets hit, he is driving for more yardage (sometimes to a fault, Iowa). I'm thinking he's probably a vocal leader, and the way he carries himself with confidence is where his leadership comes to play. And yes I did just pull that out of nowhere :)

which is why there are days I'm sad to be known as a buckeye fan. Not because of the team, b/c of how I know many will act around me. I'm very excited to go to the game this weekend, but the fact that I can count on our stadium raining down boos if we happen to go 3 and out (or even 6 and out for that matter), is pretty sad.

No. 16 Michigan State (4-1) at No. 15 Ohio State (3-2)
Saturday, 12 p.m., ABC
The Daily Line: Ohio State -6½

Ohio State player to watch:
Running back Antonio Pittman was shut down against Penn State, but Michigan State won't be able to do the same against the Buckeyes. Expect a large dose of Pittman while Troy Smith continues to try and find a way to move Ohio State through the air.
Michigan State player to watch: The Spartans' backs won't have much luck moving the ball against the Buckeyes, but passing the ball may be another matter. Matt Trannon may be locked up by Ashton Youboty, but Kyle Brown should be able to find some seams in the secondary. And Drew Stanton is definitely good enough to take advantage of any creases his receivers find.
The inside scoop: It's a stretch to say that Ohio State's run defense, ranked No. 1 in the nation, will split Michigan State's powerful two-headed offensive attack in half. But the Spartans haven't faced a top-30 defense yet. The trick for the Buckeyes will be to get pressure on Stanton. The Buckeyes will get their customary 17-28 points, the only questions is if the Spartans can top that.
Ohio State will win if … its secondary steps up and the D-line can get to Stanton.
Michigan State will win if … the Spartans can stretch the field and pull off a big play or two at key points in the game.
Notes: The Buckeyes are allowing just 13.6 points and 56.2 rushing yards per game. … Michigan State leads the conference in scoring offense (45.4) and passing offense (314) and is second in rushing offense (252.4). … Stanton has a QB rating of 190, nearly 40 points better than the next best in the Big Ten.
The pick: Ohio State 27, Michigan State 24
