It's very simple really. Tressel spent 15 years of his life at YSU. YSU is the only I-AA (soon to be provisional I-A) school on the schedule for as far out as I've seen (2011). If you think that's a coincidence that's your business.

Guins Tabbed Fifth in Sports Network's Preseason FCS College Football Poll

 Philadelphia, Pa -- Two-time defending Gateway Football Conference champion Youngstown State has been picked fifth in The Sports Network's Preseason FCS College Football Poll, the wire service announced on Tuesday (Aug. 14).

Top-ranked Appalachian State, the two-time defending national champion, collected 67 first-place votes for 1,771 points followed by Montana with 1,680.

 UMass and North Dakota State ranked third and fourth with 1,551 and 1,548 points, respectively, followed by the Penguins with 1,417.

Actually most starters on the elite 1-AA teams (like App State and YSU) will get at least a cursory look in the NFL and NFL combine. The talent at schools like this is 1-A without the grades in general.

YSU is a great school with a great tradition, but we have nothing to gain from playing them. Akron, BGSU, etc...those are schools that compete for the MAC title. YSU just upsets them. That's like saying that scheduling Boston College is like scheduling Notre Dame because BC upsets them sometimes.

There is plenty to gain from playing them. First Ohio State's two most experienced Quarterbacks have thrown a combined 11 passes in game situations. Secondly, there are a couple new starters on the offensive line and essentially a brand new backfield and receiving corps.

Add to that a couple new starters on defense and you have large portions of your team getting their feet wet. Sure YSU isn't Texas or even NIU (I'd love to see that game: YSU vs. NIU), but considering where this Ohio State team IS and where it will be (hopefully), this is as good a jumping off point as any.

Really, the best thing about the Football Championship Series is that most of the time things are actually settled on the field vs through voters in the media.

Wish they would rotate each BCS Bowl Game as round of the playoffs in a bracket with the NC Bowl as the final game.

Ouch!!!.......

YSU IS a Nationally Accredited State Institution as is tOSU. Graduation standards are the same in these schools.

I never had anyone less than a PhD education teach classes to me....The YSU engineering program is also ABET accredited.

That wasn't meant as it came out.

What I meant is that kids who don't make the grade academically to get into 1-A (and you have to admit there are quite a few of them), or get into trouble, etc, go to 1-AA because they can play immediately.

I wouldn't be suprised if YSU does not play as well as Akron or Kent, because this game is not really that important to the YSU season Except for the $$$$$$). If YSU plays the starters the whole game and one of them gets hurt, (i.e. Lost the leading tackler on D for the entire season against Penn State last year), then it could prevent YSU from making a deep playoff run toward the FCS National Championship. YSU needs to play this game so that they are somewhat respectable, without getting anyone hurt.

And if you have played football or are an educated fan, you know that if you are doing the hitting you don't normally get hurt, but if you are the hittee, you probably will at some point in the game.

Given the circumstances of the position match ups, YSU will be taking some big hits and trying to avoid key injuries. Which may make for a less interesting game than Akron or Kent, who have nothing to lose but the next game (as usual)...............And as for Akron and Kent.....We own their asses and they refuse to play us. Then the NCAA says that they need to improve their attendance or they will be knocked back down to I-AA..............Then the phone rings off the hook.................and YSU says....." I remember when you voted us out of the MAC in 1997. You voted for Marshall and Buffalo and against YSU. Then you refused to play us because you could't deal with a loss...........The you realize that your largest home attendance crowds are when YSU brings the fans...........so now you want to play? Leave the gun, take the canole. We have I-A aspirations and a contract with the Big 10."

On the contrary, I think YSU comes out on all cylinders. This game is indeed important to YSU because it puts them on the national map for a Saturday and many of these kids wanted to play for Ohio State (not to mention the several transfers from Ohio State). Not to mention the Tressel connection. They also know that the score could be bad enough without them half-stepping throught the game to avoid injury. If you play tentative to not get hurt, then chances are you will get hurt...

Thanks for talking about YSU the football team and not the other crap that is going on in this thread. I don't know much about YSU football and appreciate when you and the other Penguins share your thoughts. I find that last bit regarding the MAC interesting but not in the least bit surprising.

As for 9/2... I don't think either team will play their starters most of the game. My guess (which isn't worth much) is that tOSU plays their starters for the first 1-1.5 quarters and the first series of the second half. Many players will see playing time in this game so they can be evaluated in a game setting. I don't know what kind of offense YSU runs (and would be interesting in finding that out) but I'm sure Heacock will have his men ready to play on both sides of the ball. I can see YSU being within a touchdown at the end of the first quarter then tOSU pulling away after that.

Here's to no injuries for either team!

Cheers to no injuries!

YSU runs a smashmouth offense. No trick plays. We run off tackle and run the read option most of the time. Run, Run, Ball Control Run, Run. Expect short passes to the TE's and short hitch passes to the WR's to keep the D honest (This will not work against OSU though).

YSU is a run first team and the offense has not changed much since Coach Tressel was the Head Coach.

We typically won our National Championships under Coach Tressel with outstanding Defense and Special Teams..........the same as when he won the Championship with tOSU in 2002. Our Nugent was Jeff Wilkins (Plays for the Rams)

The offense was designed so that they didn't make too many mistakes, the D was always dominating and special teams always seemed to win the games.

We are more spread out on offense these days, but we are still a run first team.

And by the way 100% agree on your take regarding the game evaluation setting. I believe that is exactly what will happen as well.
