Game Thread Game One: Ohio State 38, Youngstown St. 6 (final)

Hey all...

I've officially come around. Like I said, YSU is more of a King Don than a cupcake, and they're one of the best that 1-AA has to offer. While I don't think it'll be competitive for long (if at all), it'll be, as Tressel deemed BGSU last year, 'a worthwhile exercise.'

Bucks 66
YSU 12

you really think our 2nd team, let alone first team, offense can hang that many points? I hope so.

Do you seriously believe that?

"no way" ????

That means that, out of the 12 or so possessions that the Buckeyes get, that YSU will find a way to stop the bucks 7 or more times.

What if we get 5 TDs in our first 7 possessions and there are 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter? Do you seriously believe that there is "no way" that the subs won't score a TD in 25 minutes? Do you seriously believe that there is NO WAY that someone on offense, defense or special teams makes a big play in the last 25 minutes of the games? Or do you think that there is NO WAY that we score 5 times in our first 7 possessions?

I agree whole-heartedly that OSU scoring less than 40 in this game is within the realm of possibility. But precluding any possibility of the alternative, which your statement does, seems to be overstating your case just a bit.

There's a difference between a coach intentionally running up a score (which sometimes is indicated by a score of 66 - 12) throwing his complete offensive play book at an over matched opponent for 60 minutes, even when it's 60 - 12.... and then there are times when the coach runs iso plays for the entire second half and puts 8 guys out on punt returns and the score still gets out of hand (72 - 0). There's no question Tress won't intentionally be going for the score if/when this game has been put away. BUT.... if YSU can't stop OSU's second and third team, there's little doubt in my mind the score could look like he "ran it up" You don't tell Brandon Saine "Hey, go in there and take some carries up the gut.. but.. listen, if you break free... for the love of shit DON'T SCORE."

Yes. I think that our 2nd team, just running our offense, will put 28 pts on the board. After our 1st team puts up 38.

I wouldn't surprise me if YSU broke a long one on our 3rd team in the 4Q, though. Their starters will likely be out by then, but if they're not, they should be plenty capable of getting it into the EZ.

We won't sniff 50 against JT's old team. By the way, YSU held Penn State to 37 last year at Crappy Valley...

While we should be able to score a bunch, low-to-mid 40s is what I'm thinking. We'll run the ball a ton which will consume the clock and we'll score every other drive or so. I can see five TDs and a couple FGs. Tressel will not humiliate his old team.

Exactly. Not going to happen. As others have mentioned, let's not assume that we are playing a DIII team either here. Their history speaks for itself. Fortunately, a major cog from best years of their history is now on our sideline. After a slow start- Bucks 37-10

I agree with those saying that Tressel will not want to embarrass a former team, or an Ohio team for that matter.

Tesselball is about playing the hand you are dealt. That seems to suggest that we're going to see trench warfare, getting the blocking assignments down and the line play sharp with lots of running against the Penguin offense. That said, Tressel will want to try his quarterbacks out in the pocket and see how they perform. Add to that mix that the Buckeyes will want to see players beyond the 1's in (especially offensive) skill positions get some quality time.

All of this tells me, without disrespect to the Penguins, the Buckeye offense could stop itself a few times.

On the other side of the ball, the Buckeyes are supposed to shine and they have something to atone for from their last game.

The defense will want to make a statement. This is a 1-AA team right now, no matter what their trajectory is to 1-A. Play 1-AA, no matter how good they are, and it better be a game in which you make a statement. Do that, and your rankings probably not suffer too much.

I think the guys will want to make a statement on offense from the opening series. So...about 21-0 at the half and somewhere around 35-0 or 42-3 by the final whistle, depending on the day?

:slappy: not trying to come off as a cock but hold on a second..

consensus seems to be this: yes they are a D-I AA team, but they are a very good D-I AA team, one that can play with and most likely beat the Akrons of the world.

I happen to agree with the consensus view point.. i think YSU can beat/hang with the MAC teams no doubt..

Would you say we would hang 60 on akron or northwestern? i don't think so..last year we didnt even do that with Troy, Teddy, Gonzo, and Pittman.

Now beyond that, for arguments sake, one thing that i would be willing to bet on, JT will pull the first team before we are up 38-0.. more like 28-0 or at the most 35-0 he will pull the first string. No score is safe, but the rule of thumb we were taught back at Watterson football was 5 scores. I can't see JT letting the first string go past 35 points.. the only way 38 is reached is if we settle for a field goal early in the game and a big play is broke to make it 38.

If YSU is scoring on us, HIGHLY unlikely IMO, then the starters may be in to score 38+

But anyways, i cant see our offense scoring that much.. its the first game of the year, playbook will be kept closed, and JT is seeing how this offense gels in game time situations.

If JT were named Petey, he may be willing to hang 60+ on his former team.. but not Tressel.

We won't sniff 50 against JT's old team.

In last years opener we scored on our first four possessions to lead 28-0.

NIU outscored us the rest of the way 12-7.

Although YSU will have a harder time keeping us out of the end zone even with our 2's, look for something matching that basic blue print.

Boom Herron behind Boone and Barton will roll up some yards. Behind Moses and Slagle - not so much.
