Brothers ready to compete

COLUMBUS ? Youngstown State coach Jon Heacock is normally cloistered in his office before the sun appears, breaking down game film. And if he needs to consult someone on a football matter, he calls older brother, Jim.
Not only is the Ohio State defensive coordinator knowledgeable enough to provide some help, but Jon Heacock doesn't know many others who are up at that hour, doing the same thing.

Rob Oller commentary: Buckeyes unite their faithful like no other team

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Ohio State football schedule shows homecoming will be Oct. 20 against Michigan State.

In other words, about seven weeks too late. The real homecoming, when college football fans return to where they believe they belong, happens Saturday in the Horseshoe. When the Buckeyes run from the tunnel in Ohio Stadium, millions of Ohioans will feel at home. Most won't be there to see it. Most won't be anywhere to see it, thanks to the standoff between some cable television companies and the Big Ten Network. But knowing that a game is being played is enough to satisfy our need for security.
The Buckeyes are playing again? Then things are back to normal.

Markey discusses our Strentgh of sched.

Buckeyes ease into schedule
Non-conference foes not up to usual standard.

COLUMBUS - At first glance, the Ohio State day planner for the 2007 football season lacks the one early big bopper - an elite non-conference opponent like Texas provided the past two seasons, and Southern California will for the next two years and the Miami Hurricanes for the two years (2010-11) after that.

The Buckeyes instead play at Washington this season, with I-AA Youngstown State, and Kent State and Akron from the Mid-American Conference tucked in and around the customary eight Big Ten games.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said he does not think the perceived softness of that non-league segment will work against his team.

SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman is stepping into a cauldron of pressure, asked to lead a revamped offense with little seasoning himself.
But at least he can draw on an experience from high school to help him through the transition.

In 1999, just a couple of months removed from middle school, he became the starter as a freshman at St. Henry and led a senior-laden team to a runner-up finish in the state playoffs.

One OSU option hasn't changed: Try the radio

Friday, August 31, 2007

It's bad enough that the Ohio State-Youngstown State football game won't be seen by Time Warner Cable customers Saturday.
What really irks is those same people won't be able to watch the Big Ten's Women's Show scheduled for Monday nights at 7:30. Expect the bars to be packed for that blockbuster.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

YOUNGSTOWN VINDICATOR PHOTO
Jim Tressel celebrated four national titles when he was the head coach at Youngstown State.

Jim Tressel had given them so much -- 15 years as football coach at Youngstown State, four national championships and a renewed sense of pride in a downtrodden region. The people of the Mahoning Valley certainly understood why Tressel was leaving in January 2001 to accept the Ohio State job. But they worried that as he moved onward and upward, they might become yesterday's news, merely a paragraph on Tressel's resume.
