OSU-YSU splits the Heacocks

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Facing the underdog role like a gnat against a windshield, Jon Heacock doesn?t believe he has the toughest job in the family Saturday.

Nope, the Youngstown State head football coach says coaching against Ohio State isn?t as hard as what his brother must do. And he wasn?t talking about Buckeye defensive coordinator and line coach Jim Heacock.

Another Heacock boy will be inside Ohio Stadium on Saturday. Jeff Heacock, who spent nearly three decades as Muskingum?s head coach, is the middle brother, six years younger than Jim, six older than Jon.

Jeff will have to pick a side.

When Jim Heacock's cell phone buzzes at 5:30 in the morning, he knows who is calling.
"It's my brother Jon. He just wants to see if I'm in the office already, working like he is," Jim Heacock said. "Of course, with cell phones, he could be anywhere."
He laughed, but he knows better. Raised on a farm outside Beloit, Ohio, the three Heacock brothers, including middle-man Jeff, have started their chores before the sun comes up for as long as they can remember, even as they became college football coaches.

Todd Boeckman, a fourth-year junior, has thrown 10 passes in his Ohio State career.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel says there is an evolution to every quarterback. In that case, Todd Boeckman is just now crawling out of the primordial ooze.
Boeckman is expected to be named the starter today for the opener against Youngstown State on Saturday. The fourth-year junior has thrown 10 career passes, all in mop-up duty.
His backups are Rob Schoenhoft (one attempt) and Antonio Henton, who redshirted last year, his first at Ohio State. The last pass any of them threw in anger was in high school.
As Schoenhoft put it, "We haven't played football against an opponent really for a while."

More than a Sweatervest Showdown

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Saturday?s game between Ohio State and Youngstown State isn?t happening just because of Jim Tressel.
With the advent of the 12-game regular season last year, major football programs are looking for small schools willing to come in for a payday without a return visit. Ohio State will turn a profit of a little less than $4 million Saturday, as it does with all home games. Youngstown State will take home a guarantee of $650,000.

Saine to see action
Freshman Brandon Saine moved ahead of classmate Daniel Herron in the battle for third-string tailback. And Tressel expects the Piqua native to be in the backfield rotation against Youngstown State.
Asked if he's designed any special plays for the speedy Saine, Tressel said: "At this point, we're just trying to progress in who we are as a whole group. But there's no question, there will be a day that you'll have to know where No. 3 is."
Small out
Sophomore Ray Small, the Buckeyes' primary kick returner and third receiver, will miss the opener and is questionable for the Sept. 8 game against Akron.
Junior Maurice Wells will return kicks and junior Bian Robiskie punts. Freshmen Dane Sanzenbacher and Taurian Washington will see action in multiple-receiver sets.
Tressel comes cheap
Florida is offering a dinner with coach Urban Meyer for $1 million. When Tressel was asked what OSU could get for a meal with him, he replied: "A buck fifty."

YSU fan Tressel to take a day off OSU coach will keep his emotions in check, show Penguins respect
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Wednesday, Aug 29, 2007
COLUMBUS: When he's not pacing the sidelines coaching the Ohio State Buckeyes, Jim Tressel often checks in on the Youngstown State University Penguins, the football program he guided to four national championships, and cheers them on.
At noon Saturday at Ohio Stadium, he won't have to look too far, and it's a certainty the Buckeyes' coach won't be exhorting the Penguins to victory.
The Penguins invade Columbus this weekend, with both teams opening the 2007 football season.
Tressel spent 15 years coaching the Division I-AA Penguins and elevated the program to a status many Division I-A schools envied. During his tenure at YSU, he amassed a record of 135-57-2. Apparently, the powers that be at OSU were envious, as well.

Notebook: No. 2 QB will play; Henton might not

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The earth certainly didn't shake when Todd Boeckman was named Ohio State's starting quarterback yesterday, but the sands might be shifting under his backups. To nobody's surprise, coach Jim Tressel confirmed that Boeckman will start Saturday against Youngstown State. The fourth-year junior has been No. 1 on the depth chart since the beginning of spring practice.

How Many QBs?: The season opener is racing ever closer, and as the week progresses more and more little tidbits about what to expect are emerging.
At his weekly press luncheon on Tuesday OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel indicated that more-than one quarterback would play against Youngstown State, but would not say just how many would see the field.
