Uh, I think you're getting your PSU games mixed up...we played PSU in heavy rain, but it didn't rain at YSU/PSU.

ah, you're correct. I was mixing up the YSU/PSU game with the Akron/PSU game.

BearBuck27's above post made me go check the score of the Akron/Penn State game last year (that was PSU's season opener and their game against YSU was their third game of the season). Despite being slowed by heavy rain, PSU still beat Akron 34-16. We all know that season openers are nearly always the sloppiest, and by the third game you're significantly better. Well, PSU did beat YSU 37-6 a few weeks later, but that was under ideal football conditions and YSU actually played PSU as tough in the first half as did Akron in their game. The point being that all the previous yayhoos screaming about playing a I-AA team need to see that YSU is indeed on the par of the MAC teams we play year-in and year-out (with no one crying about us playing MAC teams).

I'd also run a lot of that annoying crap where the quarterback can either hand off to the running back or keep it and run outside. Man, I find that play annoying. But it would keep the opposing defense honest.

That 'annoying crap' sounds like the zone read. :wink2:

You know...I don't really care what people say about the quality of Youngstown State. Unless the game is unusually close, nobody will even remember it other than tOSU and YSU fans once it is over. Ohio State fans know that YSU may not be the easiest game on the schedule. Personally I think YSU will be a better test than Akron. The Buckeyes are so young, that this team will likely make a lot of mistakes early on in the season. Mistakes that we can get away with against teams like this, but mistakes that will be costly during Big 10 play. I think this schedule plays out perfectly to help the young team get in a groove and gain some experience. I think that is exactly what this game will do. Hopefully Wells will get on track early and Todd can be efficiant. I also am looking forward to seeing how our defensive line gels together. Hopefully we stuff the run.

Who cares what anybody outside of Ohio thinks about this game...I know that everybody in the state is excited for this one.

Ohio State football: On schedule, Tressel and Smith agree

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

While Ohio State officials don't see the Buckeyes' nonconference slate and overall home schedule as anything to laugh at, many fans and critics do.

"Y-A-W-N" was the way one creative blogger summed up the first four games, by displaying the helmets of Youngstown State, Akron, Washington (away) and Northwestern.
"You know what I'm calling the home schedule this year?" one e-mailer asked. "Wisconsin and the seven dwarfs."
Obviously, he included the three other home Big Ten opponents -- Northwestern, Michigan State and Illinois -- and the other nonleague foe, Kent State, in that dig.

Penguins want more than $650,000 payday

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Youngstown State will take on Ohio State on Saturday, and if the dream scenario plays out for the Penguins, they will take home an upset victory for the ages.

Short of that, Youngstown State will take home a huge check -- $650,000 this year and next to be the Buckeyes' home opener -- and what Penguins coach Jon Heacock hopes will be a building experience for his team.
While Ohio State fans seem to view their team's first game against an NCAA Division I-AA opponent as a tuneup, most forget it is a supreme challenge for Youngstown State.

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL
What grudge? YSU still fond of Tressel

Tuesday, August 28, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Somewhere exists an alternate universe where Glen Mason is the coach at Ohio State instead of a commentator for the Big Ten Network, and Jim Tressel, in his 22nd year at Youngstown State, is preparing the Penguins to face the Buckeyes on Saturday.
Or maybe not.
"I doubt if he'd be leading the Penguins in here," said Tressel's brother, Dick, OSU's running backs coach. "Because [Ohio State] wouldn't have scheduled them. It would have been too scary. They might have gotten beaten by Youngstown."

Heacocks ready to compete

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

COLUMBUS ? Youngstown State coach Jon Heacock is normally cloistered in his office before the sun appears, breaking down game film. And if he needs to consult someone on a football matter, he calls older brother Jim.
Not only is the Ohio State defensive coordinator knowledgeable enough to provide some help, but Jon Heacock doesn't know many others who are up at that hour, doing the same thing.
