Game Thread Game One: Ohio State 38, Youngstown St. 6 (final)

Injury risk can happen in practice. In my opinion I think the schedule is set up perfect for this years team. Get some game experience and confidence before Big Ten starts. It will hopefully allow many people the opportunity to play and allow the coaches more opportunity to evaluate and coach.

Sit a perfectly healthy Beanie out for the entire game?!?! :slappy:

Whew... I had a long day. I needed that laugh. Oh, wait a minute... you were serious?

I can see the future recruiting trips now...

Jim Tressel: And if you come to Ohio State, you might be so good that we won't actually play you in a real game. How many players can say THAT?

You think Youngstown State is a real game? You're a loner.
Define real game... and tell me how Kent State isn't the exact same thing. They come in different colors and names, but the main course is still the same: cupcake.

Because we have to play a game. The risk of injury is there for any game. I don't see how being injured against Toledo is any different than being injured against YSU.
I guess I don't see why this is so hard to understand.

Why risk injury in a game that will profit you absolutely nothing? If we played only our backups, then it'd be worth playing. Live snaps. But losing a Chris Wells to YSU is like betting the house over a Snickers bar.
You didn't address his point. OSU can cruise past YSU, or Toledo, with or without Chris Wells. The (lack of) value/reward in beating Toledo is pretty darn close to beating YSU.
If you're really worried about injuries, then I'd suggest welcoming this schedule. Rushing Wells against smaller defenders and resting him for two quarters is safer than 4 quarters of feeding him the rock against an elite team.
If we're going to play, coach & schedule scared... then I'd suggest the above mindset, which I suggested earlier.

Like I said, agree to disagree. You won't convince me that YSU is a viable 1-A team, and I won't convince you that there's no merit in playing 1-AA teams at all outside of reps for the pups.

I'll leave it at that.

I'm game for discussion about who we'd like to see get some serious reps in this game.

I'm hoping to see a heavy dose of Schoenhoft/Henton, Saine, Homan, and Rose.

Same here, especially Saine. I know it will be his first college game, but I'd be curious to see how he does. He has enough speed to blow past almost everyone on most D1-A rosters, so I feel like he must be able to leave most of YSU's players in the dust. However, like I said, its going to be his college game so I'll be watching to see how well he can do especially.

It's likely that Rose will be in the regular rotation at DE, and Homan may see quite a few "quality" minutes regardless-of-opponent as well.

Absolutely but no doubt they should get significantly more PT against YSU(along with the other cupcakes). We could see Rose rack up a couple of sacks.

I would be very disappointed if he didn't. YSU has 2 very good tackles coming back, but he should be able to get a sack on either one of them after they've been going up against Gholston/Wilson for 3 quarters. If YSU puts in their own back-ups; call 9-1-1, Rose is gonna hurt somebody.

With the added heat from the new field taken into account, the relative weakness of our early schedule, many personell question marks and a possible boatload of underclass defections after this year I think you are going to see more rotation than ever under JT.

Being able to rotate fresh bodies and not have a noticeable drop off in talent is the big advantage elite teams still have over the smaller schools.

It's fine to say "agree to disagree" after each side has attempted to address the other side's argument, but you haven't done that yet. Your argument, as stated, is not specific to a 1-AA opponent, but rather says that OSU should never play any clearly inferior, non-required opponent, whether 1-AA, mid-major, or low-level BCS conference team. In short, if followed to its logical conclusion, your argument says that OSU should not schedule "tune-up" games in the non-conference schedule. The only pragmatic argument for specifically excluding 1-AA opponents (who, as has been pointed out, are in some cases better than certain 1-A opponents), is that OSU's bowl prospects will be hurt by playing 1-AA teams. Given the longer season, and the scheduling that virtually all elite teams now employ, that argument seems implausible.
