Game Thread Game One: Ohio State 38, Youngstown St. 6 (final)

You pro-YSU-scheduling guys are interesting. So, if Chris Wells destroys his knee in this game, will it still be a good idea? Ohio State has everything to lose and nothing to gain in playing this stupid game.

Because we have to play a game. The risk of injury is there for any game. I don't see how being injured against Toledo is any different than being injured against YSU.

That can be said for most OOC games (Akron, Ohio, BGSU, etc), and a couple in the b10 season as well. How would we gain from playing a different cupcake instead?
I concur that YSU is more like a King Don than a cupcake, but they're a 1-AA team. That means that they have maybe one guy with league talent and five with 1-A talent. Indiana and BGSU have a couple guys who'll make an NFL squad and couple guys who'll get a look, and then the rest of the starting roster is guys with MAC talent or better.

YSU is a great school with a great tradition, but we have nothing to gain from playing them. Akron, BGSU, etc...those are schools that compete for the MAC title. YSU just upsets them. That's like saying that scheduling Boston College is like scheduling Notre Dame because BC upsets them sometimes.

I guess I don't see why this is so hard to understand.

Why risk injury in a game that will profit you absolutely nothing? If we played only our backups, then it'd be worth playing. Live snaps. But losing a Chris Wells to YSU is like betting the house over a Snickers bar.

But losing Chris Wells to Akron would be better?

Your point doesn't make any sense.

That could be said for any game. You mine as well not even play him against poor Big 10 teams because we could win without him. The risk for injury is there no matter who you are playing. Perhaps you should be lobbying to keep the off week.

So we'll get a noticeable benefit from beating Akron by 21, versus YSU by 35?

Wouldn't we be better off holding a jersey scrimmage against our own squad?

So I guess I don't understand why coaches pull their starters when they're up big. Because the game's over and they don't need them anymore? Or because they don't want to risk injury. Even if it's both, this game is over today and we all know it. So why play Wells at all?

There are plenty of reasons. The backups need reps too, or we get stuck in 2004 land all over again with very green talent getting worked by northwestern.

I think we both know the Akron game is probably over today. That's my/our point. I really don't see much difference between the two games, other than the I-AA streak ending.

If you're really worried about injuries, then I'd suggest welcoming this schedule. Rushing Wells against smaller defenders and resting him for two quarters is safer than 4 quarters of feeding him the rock against an elite team.

Yes. I think.
Do we get a noticeable benefit from playing Akron vs YSU?

That kind of thinking is exactly why we lost to Florida, my friend. We should never go into a game thinking we've already won and pretend to know that they don't have some young players with a lot of heart who can flip this game around and leave our squad as stunned as in January.

You should never underestimate an opponent. I'm not going to say these guys possess anywhere near the talent that Florida did. I'll only say that we'd be making a big mistake to think that a team is joke-worthy before having played them.

Let's wait until we actually win before we claim a victory.

YSU's all-time record against those teams: 21-18-2. Akron won't even fucking play YSU anymore because YSU owned their asses. Under Tressel, YSU was 7-2-1 against Akron, including the last three game between the two by a combined score of 84-17 (which included a 41-7 ass-pounding). By the way, to show you sort of a joke Akron is, they've been in the MAC since 1992 (15 seasons) and have one single division title to their credit...they don't compete for shit.

Why play any games at all?

Congratulations, USC. You're national champions. We all know it.
