I thought I'd say hi as a new forum member. As a Columbus native who lives out of market, I thought it was about time I get my act together to get current on the quickly approaching 2007 season.

I have a lot of reading to do because I know little about the development of the new 2-deep & the potential new players who might make a big impact in '07.

What's up with playing 1-AA schools? I don't care if YSU is from Ohio or not!! The mighty Buckeyes don't need to be playing against such weak competition. What's next, a cross town rivalry with Cap? Just the same, I cant wait to see the Bucks hit the field in September even if it's against such a weak opponent.

:oh:

After reading your post, I wholeheartedtly agree with the portion I bolded. You may want to read the YSU game thread to find out exactly why we're playing YSU...the truth just may surprise you.

Very true!! I've been living in an OSU dark age since the bowl season ended. However, I don't think I'm that in the dark. I realize OSU likes to help Ohio schools by putting them on the schedule(and the YSU JT connection), but I'm just disappointed the Bucks will lower themselves to 1-AA competition. Thanks for the heads-up on the thread!! That will be the first thread I read so I can get better informed about the opener.

With that said, I'll be just as excited to see them step onto the field for the home opener regardless of the opponent.

playing a 1-aa team would be a complete non-issue if washington were what we thought they would be (or half of what we thought they would be) when the contract was drawn up years ago. had we played ysu last year (or the year before or next year or the year after that, etc.), there wouldn't be this talk of playing "patsies."

You make it sound like 1-AA teams are like high school teams. They aren't on the level that Ohio State is by any stretch of the imagination, but there are some good teams in 1-AA. There are also some great players who play 1-AA football. Their are also a few 1-AA teams that beat D-1 teams every year.

Maybe I'm misjudging the tone of your post but the bit about us lowering ourselves to their levels seemed like an arrogant comment.

Oh yea and welcome to BP :)

Not EVERYTHING is about being a national powerhouse and scheduling top 5 teams. A lot of JT is obviously still with YSU and what he's done will help a lot.

Some of those "I-AA" schools are better than lower-tier "IA" schools. Schools like New Hampshire, Youngstown State, Appalachian State are able to acquit themselves quite well. UMaine went into Mississippi and beat Miss. State a couple of years ago. It's not as lowly as it used to be.

And, it's not I-AA anymore. They are called the "Division I Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association." Come on, everyone knows that...

Appalachian State can't schedule games with lower tier IA schools anymore, because they are afraid a loss to a I-AA team will knock them out of bowl contention. We used to play Wake Forest regularly, but they won't touch us. Neither will East Carolina or Marshall. We also can't schedule upper-tier I-AA programs from out of conference, because they are afraid we'll knock them out of the playoffs. We used to play Eastern and Western Kentucky regularly, but no more. So, that leaves us to fill our out of conference schedule with schools like Michigan and Mars Hill. Youngstown State is in a similar position.

Im not suggesting the Bucks load the early schedule with Texas caliber teams each year, but any mid-major 1-A school should be a minimum standard for the Buckeyes.

I know a few other big programs play 1-AA schools (Texas, KSU, VT, etc, etc,), but do we really want to be like them?
