Game Thread Game One: Ohio State 34, Miami of Ohio 14 (final)

Defense

Hey guys what do you think of the defense today!!? Heres' my insights!

DE- Both Mike/Jay got I thought very good pressure even when we only rushed 3. I thought for the most part they played very well.

DT- I thought we played pretty decent all night except on a few occasions it seemed like our DT's didn't know where the ball was at and would spin the wrong wat etc. etc.

Lb- Outstanding, they sacked the QB, pressured him, dropped very well in coverage just an outstanding job.

DB- This is where I'm most impressed with. All last year our Db's played off and we gave up that 5-10 yard play. This game however our Db's Constantly pressed/blitzed and made the Recievers life hell. Not to Mention our Db's running up in run support and laying a few good licks. I think this group is very special!

Over all our starting defense gave up only 157 total yards. The other yards were against the 2nd team defense. The Miami offense was only able to gain 1.1 yards per attempt which is awesome! Earlier in the week some of the OSU experts predicted OSU would prolly in all honestly give up around 300 yards passing. I'm very happy with our defenses efforts today! Only one thing I didn't really like though. Did it seem like our d-line was really spread out today when we were in the 3 man front? This really exposed the middle IMO and with Romance/Young coming to town next week I don't really know how that would work out against a good O-line.

O-h!!!!

DE-Jay got some pressure on the quarterback, i i thought patterson would stick out more, kudla mightve had the best defensive play of the game, if you can rush three lineman and still sack the quarterback that quickly your defense can really take off.
DT-Pitcock looked good, Green looked alright, they held their own against a good miami o-line.
LB-All 3 had a great game doing everything.
DBs-Looked great, everett still couldve played better, but he should improve.

The way that our Secondary played against Miami was awesome! Very physical didn't give them much room, and when they caught the ball they laid some stick on people! WHen watching this group I'm starting to gain confidence about next week! If OSU can shut down thier Recievers (which are not as talented as Miami's) then I don't think a one demsional Texas team beats OSU.

The biggest thing that stuck out in this game was just how effiient and polished our offense looked. It just looked like a machine, steadily moving the ball down the field. Another thing I noticed was how much the Redhawks planned for Ginn. This just seemed to open up other recievers and especially Pittman. Zwick had a nice game, very efficient preformance. The Redhawks were obviously overmatched, but I do give them credit for really containing Ginn as he never really broke out with a big play until his touchdown catch.

As far as the defense goes, the playcalling was absolutely excellent. Betts was under fire all day and we got great pressure from linebacker blitzes and the d line also did a nice job. The secondary also looked solid and of course there was that great INT by Whitner. Overall, great job by Tressel to keep the troops focused and now they can look towards Texas.

Ah, finally college football season is here again...

I totally agree with what was said above about how Ginn worried miami too much. I mean Ginn was double/triple covered at times, and honestly that just left out running backs open (especially in the flats) it also just let our other recievers/tight ends wide open. If Texas tries to stop Ginn then I think its suicide because we just have too many weapons.

I think we'll be in 5 wide alot against Texas because that will definatly expose Texas' back 7. It will also at times force Texas to go with 3 down lineman instead of 4 which will in most cases give us more room to run.

I just hope we take a couple more shots deep next game. I can only remember two deep throws all game (didn't see the last 1 1/2 quarters tho) one of them Holmes got mobbed and we got 15 yards for pass interference, and the other deep pass Ginn Scored from 45 yards out. I think we're too dangerous to not give it a couple more shots deep than what we really did. For sure I have a feeling we didn't see very much of our offense today!

Read this thread from Sept 2nd to now (which took forever!). Everyone reading this, check out gotwoody's post on page 27 (I believe?) and give the guy some greenies. Hit the score right on the nose.

To those that weren't able to get the game in Ohio, I left Toledo at 11:30am this morning, listened to the first half from Toledo to Findlay to Marion to 13th street listening to am stations between 1340 and 1470. If all else fails, the radio will have it. I traveled half way across Ohio without missing a single call. Got there just as it hit half-time.

Played a hell of a game. However, I think we may have shown Texas a little too much... a little too much of our SICK defense!! Best call on the radio was Whitner's sack: according to the announcer, it was "like tipping over a trash-can".

Aloha Bucks! I just stopped at an Intenet place here in the hotel to see what the buzz is with Oklahoma. I caught the first 2+ quarters of your game before leaving for the SC game. I was quite impressed (not that I expect any of you care).

Congrats on the win.

I suspect that Miami is a far better team than it looked today, because the Buckeyes are that good. Time will tell.

something that just crossed my mind concerning the Offense was the production on First Down... the success on first down was key to the O's overall success... i think that Tressel, and the O, did a fantastic job of getting positive yards on first... honestly, '03 Indiana notwithstanding, i cannot think of a single game since San Jose State '02 where the O was so consistantly in Second and Short situations... obviously, i did not see most of the second half, due to ABC's descision to shift coverage to the OU-TCU game (who can blame them, honestly?) but to my recollection, the O was in 2nd and 2 a TON today...maybe 70% of the time... and it goes without saying that it's MUCH easier to keep the ball rolling when you have 2nd and 2, than 2nd and 8... keep that trend going, and it's going to be a long year for opposing D's...

as an aside, did TBDBITL play 'Brown Eyed Girl' in the second half? they usually play it when the Buckeyes go up by 28 points... i' like to get a copy of that...

My thoughts of yesterday's game:

First, we didn't have our usual tickets, up in 23C or 25C. We got seats in row 2 of 26AA (approximately 10 yard line, near the open end, visitors side). I've never sat that close to the field. It was pretty cool. From our old seats, we could see the entire field, we could tell if the guy got the first down, we could see wide open receivers, and we could tell it was going to be intercepted, etc. From our new seats, depth perception is pretty bad on the other side of the 50. A player can get the ball, dance around a little bit, and get tackled. Did he lose 5 yards? Get 10 yards? I couldn't tell. But on our side of the field, it was incredible. (For example, Whitner's INT was AWESOME!)

Second, as to the actual game, I was impressed with Ohio State's use of the spread offense. I knew they would use it, and I knew they would use it more than last year. But I didn't think they'd use it as often as they did. I also liked that they used the I-formation at times, showing that they can give opposing defenses multiple looks.

I thought Pittman looked good. I saw one stat that he ended with 95 yards, on ESPN, I think. But I also heard he had 100+. I'll figure out, later, what the numbers were.

I was REALLY impressed with Zwick. I've always liked Zwick (even when I like Smith more), and I had a feeling he'd play well yesterday. But 17-23? Awesome! He had a couple of mistakes: the interception and the miscommunication/incompletion right before it. Those plays were right in front of me. I don't know whose fault the incompletion was. It looked like Holmes thought the route was inside, Zwick thought it was outside. Maybe one of you knows who was right, but I don't. The interception looked to me like Zwick was flustered. From my spot, it looked like Miami had extra pressure (a blitz, maybe), and Zwick just threw it toward Holmes, maybe trying to get the incompletion, instead of a sack. The DB made an awesome catch. It happens.

I liked Boeckman. I had heard he would get in the game in the 2nd quarter, but he didn't get in until the 3rd. He didn't seem to be shitting his pants in the pocket, the way some QB's do the first time they play, and his passes looked pretty good.

I thought the defense was great. Betts didn't have enough time to get comfortable in the pocket. And the speed of the DBs and LBs to close on the receivers after the reception was really good.

Ginn was contained really well by Miami. I, like 100,000+ others in the stadium, wanted to see him break long plays for TDs. His TD catch was pretty sweet, but Miami did a good job with open-field tackles and overall containment.

It's hard for me to find a problem with the game, but I don't think it was perfect. I think Ohio State is going to have to step it up a notch or two to beat Texas, but I'm less worried right now about Texas than I was before the game.

Finally, I'm a big bone-head. I have a cheapo $20 digital keychain camera that holds 20 pictures on it. The pictures are stored as long as the battery doesn't run out, which only lasts about a day. You can change batteries if you're quick enough. So I took some pictures (I think the one of Whitner scoring the touchdown was going to be good), then I tried to make sure the battery would last until I got home (around 10:00), so I changed it with a good one. I guess I wasn't fast enough - I lost all the pictures. Next time (Iowa game), I think I'll just hope the one battery will live until I get home.

what people are overlooking is how discipilined we were. how many penalties did we have? it couldnt have been many, i dont think either of our lines jumped offsides, i dont remember any face masks either, i know we had a roughing the kicker and holding but thats all i can remember.
