Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

Haha coming from fans of a team who struggled to beat San Diego State.
And a team that's won a national title, 3 BCS bowls, finished in the top 5 three times, won two Big Ten titles all in the last four years. You do realize how stupid you sound to us when you make a comment about a narrow win over SDSU when what OSU has done over the last four years is roughly 10X more significant than the entire history of NIU football?

The video wasn't badass
No argument there. Who the hell puts a first half field goal in a highlight reel? Where were the highlights from all your mac championships and bowl game victories?

As for the SIU game, we struggled. I'm sure we were overlooking them because we played Iowa State the week after. We won the game, that is all that matters.
Congrats on the hard fought win over the Salukis. Glad to see you guys could improve your record against in-state 1-AA opponents to 1-1 over the last five years. At least SDSU is a 1-A team with a decent history and plays in a decent conference. It's understandable to be looking ahead to the national powerhouse Cyclones though. Boy, I can hardly contain myself just thinking about our game with Northwestern.

buckeyekicks,

to comment on your "angry" music section. considering i play that music (well more metalcore/metal/thrashcore/grindcore) the main places for that music are in the South, mainly South Florida, Atlanta, and North Carolina. Obviously it exists in other places, but the "scene" is the biggest there. And not all of us are angry at all, just a way of getting a rush without having to do drugs!

Are you are broken record?

You just keep saying the same things over and over and over.

I by no means thought it would impress you. I was just sharing it. I don't give a shit if it impresses you or not.

Well, I hope the ding and the warning impresses you, G-Force. You posted a video that you had posted to another site, telling us how you found it to be "badass". When we found it to be pretty pedestrian, you took personal offense and set off to start a flame war.

People have shown you a lot of latitude because we realize you genuinely support your team and we respect that. Disrespect and namecalling toward mods are not welcome at BP and folks that do it don't last very long.

Can we please get back to discussing the game now?

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE FOOTBALL
Toledo, Akron gain respect
Rockets look to stay on top; Zips hope to solidify new status

DETROIT — The Mid-American Conference football media day was as much a fashion show as it was a time for coaches and players to provide a Cliff’s Notes version of what to look for in 2006.
Bowling Green coach Gregg Brandon strolled into the Renaissance Hotel ballroom wearing a Creamsicle orange tweed sport coat that strangely wasn’t one of a kind.
"Actually, I got it off the rack," he said. "I have one that’s bright orange, but I didn’t want to bring that one. Too loud."
Ohio University tailback Kalvin McRae was decked out in an off-white double-breasted suit with vertical and horizontal stripes and off-white shoes to match.
The man who made the loudest statement, though, was Toledo linebacker Mike Alston. He wore a white short-sleeved dress shirt and dark slacks. It was what he wore on his fingers — a MAC championship ring from 2004 and a West Division championship ring from last season — that made everyone else look casual.
"I wear the rings depending on where I’m going," Alston said. "I wear them if it’s a family event. Or if there’s going to be a girl present and I want to attract her attention. … I also hand out Toledo apparel all the time to family and friends."
The rings, though, have to be earned. Although the Rockets are picked to finish second behind Northern Illinois in the MAC West, they have been the first name in the league with four division championships and two conference championships in the past five years.
Everyone at Northern Illinois knows Toledo has defeated the Huskies in four of the past five games.
"We talk about winning the West Division championship, the MAC championship and getting to a bowl every year," Rockets coach Tom Amstutz said.
Last season, Toledo finished 9-3 to match its average of nine wins per season since 2001 and schooled Texas-El Paso 45-13 in the GMAC Bowl.
Akron is another team to beat. The Zips went a long way in wiping out their image as lovable losers by upsetting Northern Illinois 31-30 in the final minute of the conference championship game and playing in their first bowl, a loss to Memphis in the Motor City Bowl.
What do they do for an encore?
"We can do it again, right? " coach J.D. Brookhart said. "We know what the challenges are. We know we won three games that we shouldn’t have won last year. We know we lost three games we shouldn’t have lost. We wore our rings (proudly), but then we realized we could get better. We could have been 4-8 or 10-2. We want to be that 10-2 team. That’s our goal."
Northern Illinois has the most complete player in the MAC in diminutive tailback Garrett Wolfe — 1,802 all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns — but Akron has the best quarterback in senior Luke Getsy. He threw for 3,455 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior.
"He could call his own game, honestly," Brookhart said. "Luke just gets it."

What are 25 teams that have absolutely no chance of winning at Ohio Stadium in 2006?

I'll take also-rans for 400 Alex.

What I was meaning to say is what Ohio State has done over the last four years is FAR MORE impressive than anything the Mid-American Conference has EVER done. The only thing the MAC has done is give Ohio State and Notre Dame and Michigan first-class coaches. That, and give the Big Ten teams a nice scrimmage early in the season. Oh, and occasionally upsetting also-rans of BCS conferences. But that isn't a normal occurance, considering they got SWEPT by the Big Ten last year.
