Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

No way you put up 30 in the fist half. Not a chance.

We put up 38 in the first 23 minutes against Kent State in 2002. Is it likely that we break 30 in the first half? Not really. But don't say "no way", because our not scoring 30+ in the first half won't be due to your defense but rather Tressel not tipping his hand to Texas.

Kent State went 3-9 in 2002 with a 50-0 loss to Ohio, and you won the National Title.

I can say with certainty we are alot better then they were, and you guys probably won't be as good as the 2002 team.

In fairness, NIU is considerably more talented than Kent State. They've consistently been among the best mid-majors for several years, they just haven't gotten the pub that Marshall, Boise, or Fresno State get. Sad thing is is that NIU has actually gotten some big upset wins, unlike the others who just come really, really close.

Our 2006 offense blows away our 2002 offense. In the last half of the 2002 season, our offense scored the following (in regulation):

19, 13, 34, 10, 16, 14, 17

With the exception of the 34-point "explosion" at home against Minnesota, we averaged a paltry 14.8 ppg. Our offense was ranked in the low 100s IIRC. Conversely, in the last half of the 2005 season, our offense scored:

41, 45, 40, 48, 25, 34

That's 38.8 ppg, over two and a half times that of the 2002 offense.

As pointed out earlier, Michigan put up 27 on you in the first half last year...Northwestern also put up 21 on you in the second quarter alone. Even freakin' Akron put up 28 on you in the first half. So don't go around saying there's no chance we can ring up 30 on you in one half.

That's 38.8 ppg almost triple that of the 2002 offense.

8 freshman and 3 sophmores saw major playing time on the defensive side of the ball last year. All of the games you mentioned were within the first month of the season. In the freshmans 1st 2 games they had to go play @ Michigan and @ Northwestern. Of course they got lit up. However they were only going to improve with expierence.

After the 5th game of the year we gave up 8, 3, 31, 17, 28, 17, 7, and 31 in the final 8 games (15.6 PPG). Again the defense was very inconsistent because it was so young, but as the season went on it improved.

The Michigan and Northwestern games were great learning expierences for the D. We only lost 2 starters on defense, and we will be much improved.

Besides you guys won't have the ball long enough in the 1st half to put up 30 points.

I agree. 30 points would require four TDs and a FG in a half -- five possessions, minimum. No way will that happen in this game. Tressel will not reveal anything in this game for Texas if he doesn't need to, and this game can be won with "Pittman right," "Pittman left," and "Beenie up the middle."

I imagine vintage JT: five or six minute-plus possessions, 12 running plays with a 'safe' pass play every so often to keep the secondary honest, shorten the game, and keep Wolfe off the field. If that's the case, OSU won't even have five possessions in the first half unless the D forces two turnovers.
I'm pretty confident at least one of those will go for a 50+ yard touchdown.
The NIU offense is going to go 3 and out at least 3 times in the first half....that leaves plenty of time for 2 long drives, 2 long plays and an NIU turnover in their end. Tressel doesn't need to tip his hand, NIU doesn't have the talent to keep up. Is there a good chance we won't score 30? Sure. Is there a fair chance we will? Sure.
Like I said, I'll be surprised if we don't.

You couldn't be more wrong.

If we didn't shoot ourselves in foot against Michigan we would have been right there with them. With 5:00 left in the 1st half we were on our way into the endzone before fumbling at about the Michigan 20. We could have cut the defecit to 3 and we had the ball 1st in the 2nd half. Then we forced a punt, and fumbled the punt on out own 14. They ended up scoring and went up 17 at the half. Game over.

2 plays in a matter of 4 minutes cost us that game.

Final 8 games:
Miami (Ohio)
Eastern Michigan
Kent State
Ball State
Central Michigan
Toledo
Western Michigan
Akron

:lift:
scUM and Northwestern were the two best teams you played, neither had an offense in the same ballpark as the one you will see the Buckeyes bring, and they scored 27 and 24 points in the first half. That must mean there is no chance tOSU will score 30, right?

Edit: I forgot to mention that although scUM and Northwestern were the two best teams you played, neither of them was any good.

I'll fix Findlay's quote.

"NIU doesn't have the talent to keep up with Ohio State."

NIU doesn't have the depth or talent up front to slow down our rushing attack. If they start stacking the box with 8 or 9 guys, that will leave guys like Teddy and Gonzo 1 on 1 which will result in big plays all over the field.

Ugh, and if Tamba Hali hadn't blind-sided Troy in Happy Valley we would have been right there with Penn St....those arguments do not work, especially against underachieving 7-5 teams.
