Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

No, this is the "good running backs whose gaudy stats make them seem better than they are" thread, which originally was the "Garrett Wolfe is so great Ohio State had better out because of what he did at Michigan" thread.

If Garrett Wolfe runs for 150+ yards and an 8.7 ypc average against our first team defense, I will immediately go take a shit in my front yard, in broad daylight, right after the game and videotape it and post it on YouTube.
If Garrett Wolfe runs for 150+ against our first team defense, I will make a video of myself shitting on my keyboard while watching the video of you shitting in your front yard.

Threats like that may be the only way to stop Garrett Wolfe.

Then again, Garrett Wolfe has a strict policy of not negotiating with terrorists.

Garrett Wolfe.

If this were to occur, my only response to this is that I am VERY happy that I hang out on the east side of the island...

Well this thread has certainly gone to shit...

And BTW, shitting in your own yard is nothin'. I did that all the time when I was a toddler (at least that's what I've been told )...videotape yourself shitting in the neighbors yard...now we're getting serious an' shit...

What sounds familiar is your non-stop soapbox of Wolfe, and your complaints of us being repetitious when in fact our replies are no more repetitious than your repeat comments that cause the replies.

So what if our team has the attitude that Wolfe ain't shit? You think that will somehow make our defense vulnerable to the mighty Wolfe? Let me tell you how this game is going to go. Both teams will start out slow the first few drives, but once Troy Smith gets revved up it's lights out, and we're up 24-7 at halftime (Wolfe will have 40-50 yards on 12-15 carries). Smith leads us to a TD on our first possession of the second half to go up 31-7 and Tressel puts in the second team offense and defense. NIU sees that the game is all but over and abandons the passing game it went to late in the first half when it fell behind, and feeds the ball to Wolfe continuously to pad his stats. He gets 15-20 yards per drive (a first down or two per drive against our second string) but still never threatens to score once the defense tightens as NIU approaches midfield, and NIU keeps punting. Our second string offense scores again after a drive or two to go up 38-7 early in the fourth, and we empty the bench on offense and defense. Wolfe stays in to get his precious yardage, and against our third string and cheerleaders, he cracks 100 on his 25th or so carry, and puts NIU in FG range, which they convert. NIU fans strut and pound their chests that Wolfe has again went over 100 yards against a great defense (despite the fact that most yardage is against bench players), although our third-string offense puts another TD on the board to make the final 45-10. NIU thus puts yet another "scare" in a BCS team. :roll1:

I think Mili just about nailed it with his crystal ball. That said, I'm not sure that even our seconds will give Wolfe his hundred yards.

If it wasn't that the Buckeyes get up for every game under Tressel, that this is their first game of what could be a national championship year, or that the guys want to make sure of their place in the 1's for the Texas game, I think all of this talk of Wolfe's Heisman hopes might be just all the motivation the Buckeyes need to get up for a game against NIU.

This isn't about the fact that Wolfe would be better running behind an Ohio State line or that playing weaker opponents somehow makes up for the line he runs behind. He'll be running behind that line when they go up against an experienced Buckeye front line and a Buckeye D that wants to prove itself.

How many Heisman trophies have been buried in the Shoe? Wolfe has not faced a defense like this one; his will be next.

"Just seeing how everyone treated the guys from Notre Dame and Ohio State ..." Wolfe began. "Chris Wells, he's the No. 1 running back recruit in the country and he's going to OSU, hasn't even played a down yet and he's already been anointed the next great guy at Ohio State.

"And it dawned upon me: Of the things I've been fortunate enough to accomplish at Northern Illinois, if I was at Ohio State ... if I was even at Northwestern or Illinois, I'd be mentioned as one of the best football players to ever play in that conference because of what I've accomplished statistically.

Garrett Wolfe would be our third string tailback this year. Garrett Wolfe is a good MAC tailback, and nothing beyond that.

From "Ask CFN":
Q: I know this list could go on for a while, but who are your top 10 offensive playmakers in 2006? Not the Heisman contenders, but the guys who will flat out make plays? WRs, TEs, QBs, RBs, and, if you feel the need, throw an offensive lineman or the whole crew of big uglies in there. - JG

A: It's hard to define exactly what you mean when you say playmakers. I'm guessing it's a combination of being clutch, making things happen out of nothing, and putting up nice stats. My top ten "playmakers", very loosely defined, would be 1) Troy Smith, QB Ohio State, 2) Garrett Wolfe, RB Northern Illinois, 3) Drew Tate, QB Iowa, 4) Adrian Peterson, RB Oklahoma, 5) Drew Stanton, QB
Michigan State, 6) Darius Walker, RB Notre Dame, 7) Ted Ginn Jr., WR Ohio State

Great, I can hear the debate already ... "It's black!" "No, it's a dark green!" "Depends on the lighting." "Crayola makes that exact same color ... poop." "Mili's selling official lawn poops, I get mine in 3 days and we'll know for sure at that time."

If the unpossible (yes misspelled) happens, I fully expect to see that turd donning a buckeye sticker for color comprison purposes. :tongue2:

Either that list is only for the midwest, or there is a serious lack of talent out there. I would also be hard pressed to put Darius Walker ahead of Jamaal Charles. I'm also a little surprised to see Tate ahead of Stanton....perhaps it's just the complete beatdown Tate took at the hands of the silver bullets that's coloring my opinion of him....

No he wouldn't. He would be your starter, and he will prove it in September.

He's probably talented enough to have challenged for PT at tOSU, but he wouldn't be the starter any more than he would be a third stringer. He's a good back, but he's not "would be the starter at any school in the country" good.

The only thing I expect him to prove in September is that tOSU has once again reloaded on defense and the horseshoe is where yard-per-game averages and heisman dreams die.
