I think some people don't know how to set "Game Mode" or "Film Mode" or any other presets on their TV.

Not making a joke... *most* people literally don't know these options are there. I know my wife certainly wouldn't. Picture color, saturation, true black, even pan-and-scan vs letterboxing are irrelevant to her.

Hell, it's taken me five years just to get her to choose the HD channels over the SD ones.

You're not getting your TVs best if you don't have some sort of electrical enhancement like a high end "filter" or better. My Sony is 8 years "old" but I have a high end surgeprotector. (PS Audio) All my expensive electronics are fed/protected through it. It's "extreme". But even something around $200 can make your TV look and sound better.

I was expecting to be annoyed watching it last night with all the complaints I saw about how dark and hard it was to see stuff, but I didn't think it was bad at all? Maybe I see shadows/darkness better? I don't know, but it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be, IMO.

Having watched it again, my overall impression is still very positive. They swung hard and connected. It topped the other GoT battle episodes, certainly in scope, and I'd argue intensity. It was dark, blurry, chaotic, and disorienting, but that's the "realism" they were looking for. I read an article yesterday that quoted one of the guys in charge of the Helm's Deep battle scene in LotR, which was apparently lit so that you could see everything, and when asked where the lighting came from he responded, the same place as the music. GoT = tOSU; LotR = SCum.

Same here. I've just been telling everyone that complains that maybe they too should buy a 70inch 4K TV.

I mean, our main TV is a 55" Samsung Black Friday special from like 4 years ago (HD, not 4K), so nothing special and I didn't do that much tweaking to settings out of the box. I did notice that most of the people complaining in my Twitter feed were watching live via cable, whereas I watched it on HBO Now last night, so if the compression on there is noticeably different (i.e. better/less) that could have been the issue.

Anyway, as for the episode itself, I was satisfied. I wouldn't say it was amazeballs, and Helm's Deep was definitely a better battle in my IMO, but it was interesting and fun. The ending was definitely not expected, although I wondered WTF he was doing just standing there looking at Bran for so long.

Last thing I’m going to say about the abominably stupid Dothraki frontal assault into darkness: If you were standing there in the cold having just watched them charge away screaming with flaming swords and then watched those lights go out, it would have to be the Whattheactualfuck/holyshit! moment of your life no matter what else you’d seen. Except there wasn’t enough WTF?! reaction. They all just kind of stood there. They saved a ton on CGI getting rid of the cavalry early (cavalry fighting the dead?) and also delivered a singularly unique scene (although I would’ve like to have seen it from Jon/Dany’s position, as well). It was a catastrophic waste of military resources but, I think, a brilliant use/non-use of tv show resources.

I just go back to the craziness that was the Battle of the Bastards where mounted cavalry were charging through lines of men and the near first person view from Jon's perspective when dudes were just going by him on horse left n right with gruesome violence. I mean that was freaking amazing and honestly what I was expecting the Battle of Winterfell to feel like and it just didn't.

I don’t disagree at all. I think they had to, paradoxically, limit their scope while creating the biggest/most expensive battle ever. They couldn’t get that done with an undead cavalry charge, I’d imagine, so instead of half-assing it, they went the way they did.

Terrible battle strategy not withstanding, that scene was fucking awesome. An extremely clever way to save some money on CGI and also impart just how dire the situation was.
