After the initial charge of the dead, I thought Brienne of Tarth was absolute fucking toast. I could swear I heard her screaming in agony.

Was the Battle of Winterfell the darkest show ever filmed. I couldn't see shit. This was apparently the most expensive episode of television ever filmed, they certainly didn't spend any money on lighting.

Hypothetically, if they (the northmen/others) started with 15,000 troops - how many do you think are left?
Maybe 1500?

I found that watching on my ipad pro with the brightness turned up was the way to go. May try again with one of the 4Ks in the house and upping the brightness.

The lighting was dark, and there was a snowstorm, because it saves money on CGI. Blurred edges vs taking the time to make sure everything looks good under sharp, clear focus.

It also creates an atmosphere and blah blah, but mainly it makes the CGI cheaper.

See the 1997 Godzilla movie for a more humorous example of it conveniently raining the entire movie to save money, and although the CGI still looks amazing today, it was also raining during the major T Rex scenes in Jurassic Park - just to give a few examples of using this trick.

Maybe it’s because I got really barbecued before the episode but I thought it was:

That wasn't CGI in Jurassic Park, it was a life size, full animatronic, T-Rex...

I was expecting to be annoyed watching it last night with all the complaints I saw about how dark and hard it was to see stuff, but I didn't think it was bad at all? Maybe I see shadows/darkness better? I don't know, but it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be, IMO.

I think some people don't know how to set "Game Mode" or "Film Mode" or any other presets on their TV.

Not making a joke... *most* people literally don't know these options are there. I know my wife certainly wouldn't. Picture color, saturation, true black, even pan-and-scan vs letterboxing are irrelevant to her.

Hell, it's taken me five years just to get her to choose the HD channels over the SD ones.

I thought the exact same thing on Brienne of Tarth, thought she was gonezo after that first charge and then see her fighting with Jamie later on. Kind of glad she made it though. And the darkness really made it hard for me enjoy in parts of the episode.

That being said, I need to go back and watch it again...looking at the comments, I think I missed some pretty critical moments. And maybe I can get past the initial disdain I had for the episode due to the darkness, it was tough to get over the fact that I couldn't see half of it on the first watch. I didn't hate the episode and probably built it up too much in my head, but probably need to rewatch it.

The factory tint setting is always too high.
