They were fighting Mance because they thought if the Free Folk got past the wall, they'd all be slaughtered. They're down to their last 100 men. And seeing a giant straight droopy dog that dude has to have an effect as well.But aren't these the same night's watchmen that fought against all hope to keep Mance on the other side of the wall?

It also could be a story telling mechanism to help emphasize that Jon Snow is a good leader and Alliser Thorne is not (or the dynamics of the men questioning the legitacy of the coup... or whatever).They dropped their [Mark May] before the guy got slammed. But fair enough.
