Because HBO is hardline on their stance against cable companies to get channels/Internet subs pseudo-a la carte. HBO wants you to watch all their shows, not just GoT. And it worked. We're finally getting there.

‘GAME’ ON: HBO WILL OFFER STANDALONE STREAMING IN 2015

Forget winter: HBO a la carte is coming.

At a Time Warner Inc. Investors Meeting today, HBO chairman Richard Plepler said that his company would offer a standalone streaming service at some point in 2015.

Noting that there are roughly ten million homes in America with broadband access but no cable service — a number expected to keep rising — Plepler said, "That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO. So, in 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States. We will work with our current partners. And, we will explore models with new partners. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them."

I don't read the books, but everything I've heard is that the books go downhill from what we've seen so far on HBO. I wouldn't be surprised if the producers clean up the story to make the next season or two better than the books. It sounds like they are going to finish the story before GRRM anyway.

Somewhat. Book 6 will be done by the time season 6 filming starts. And martin has already said he knows how it will end and will work with HBO in that regard.
