House of the Dragon pilot was good, IMHO. Miguel Sapochnik being the man in charge gives me hope.
I also enjoyed it. Unlike the original series, they have the entire story plotted out but are extremely light on details and have a lot of space to fill in the gaps. The fact that they started so early is a good sign in my opinion; firmly establishing the relationships will make it more compelling and meaningful when shit goes down in the future—and the one key relationship they’re taking the time to set up here wasn’t even in the books (in that they didn’t know each other young and grow up together in the books).

Hopefully they don’t get bored (or are forced to for financial reasons or something) and rush through it, which was ultimately what doomed the original series as much as running out of books to adapt.

Edit: I just looked up actors/# of episodes on IMDB and it looks like they might jump forward pretty quickly, but possibly maintain flashbacks? The young actor playing a character is listed in 10 episodes, but the older actor playing the same character is listed in 9 episodes.

Episode 1 delivered death, dismemberment, a cart of arms, hands, heads, and penises, implied incest, a tournament, two named large adult dragons, three small council sessions, a cremation by dragon fire, one mention of Winter is Coming, and a stand-off with the Kings Guard by a relative of the king.

When that’s your pilot, I cannot wait to see what shit goes down in Episode 9.

Oh, and hilariously enough, at around 9:20 pm I grabbed my iPad mini to look up the Targaryen family tree and both Song of Ice and Fire wikis were offline and throwing Cloudflare 502 errors.

Pretty good first episode....as far as first episodes go, this was far more refined than what you'll see typically.

The c-section scene was a little much but that's a me thing - my wife had severe complications after my son was born that way.

I was left with the impression that whatever huge battle ends up occurring, it's going to be insane even by GoT standards.

So, I suffer from this weird thing where I can watch near cartoonish violence and gore and have no problem gawking. I was a horror movie buff as a teen with a subscription to Fangoria and religiously attended every premiere of a Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street sequel knowing full well they’d be bad and still entertaining. Loved horror movies.

What actually makes me squeamish are run of the mill TV hospital dramas that show hyper-realistic botched procedures and so on.

I say all that to say this, the C Section intercut with the brutality of the tourney participants bloodlust in the absence of any recent wars wasn’t a problem for me. It was Alicent Hightower ripping off her own fingernails that elicited an “oh my god!” from me.

My wife looked at me and said, “So that’s the problem you have with that scene?”

Wow. I’m on board. GoT theme returns for the opening credits, and the show is 100% focused on the politic of houses jockeying for succession. Rhaenyra is a badass. Her flying to Dragonstone beneath the mist on Syrax to call Daemons bluff was amazing.

Yeah it only took me two episodes to get hooked, this show has got a lot of potential. On GOT when they talked about the Targaryen dynast and the dragons, I always thought "That would be an awesome show on its own to tell that story". When I saw they were doing just that, I got pretty excited and so far the show is off to a great start. I also am the same way on being able to watch the over the top gore but not stuff like the c-section...I had to look away during that scene. Not really a complaint about the show, just something my stomach couldn't handle. In any event, really looking forward to having another good Sunday evening show to watch after football winds down.

So you're saying that when Jon Snow (Ned Stark and a Targaryen result), hooked up with Daenarys Targaryen, it coulda been a first cousin thing? (didn't realize who Jon Snow's mother's line came from)......will look at the prequel. PS, read all the books, not impressed, but was very much impressed with the way Hollywood brought to screen. Usually the opposite (for me at least). Books being better than the screen version....

I believe Jon Snow was actually the offspring of Daenarys’ older brother and Ned Shark’s sister. So Jon hooked up with his aunt, before learning who his parents really were. But she was awful hot, so who could blame him?
