I read an article yesterday that made a pretty good case for how the show was screwed from the beginning. GRRM has done a great job of building a world, but even he has no idea how he is going to give readers a satisfying ending. He keeps adding characters that aren't core to the story rather than moving events toward a conclusion. My thought is he will put out Winds of Winter at some point in the next few years and then spend the rest of his life working on the next book until he dies and someone else gets to finish it for him. If I were him I would be scouring all of the theories that people had for the final season pick a mix of the best ones and start writing. The show pretty much gives him a do over when he writes the book(s).

I think we can assume that it mostly ends how s8 did... the difference will be the how and why. There's no singular NK in books ... and their raison d'etre will actually be fleshed out instead of being a trope.
Some dragons will die... or be turned. Euron will likely figure heavily there, as in tv show. But not with magical heat seeking harpoons one episode followed up with stormtroopers the next week.
Any number of people could end up on the throne, including Bran... with the right storytelling.

Best, and best-delivered, line from the last episode was Arya bitch slapping wannabe bad ass Yara, who sat out ALL of the fighting: Mention killing my brother again and I’ll slit your throat. Period. No one sitting there doubted that she’d follow through. When She Who Killed The Night King says that, you damn well better listen.

Given half the council of surviving characters never saw a glimpse of the others... i dont think they give a shit.
Yara being upset was contrived and bad writing regardless to keep discussion from Jon.
I doubt GRRM makes him king either... but the plotarmor laziness is weak.

Ya know.. we let that friggin weasel Tyrion off the hook... little bastard single handedly talks Jon into offing Dany.. then when he gets the soapbox never says a word that it was his idea...
yet turns to worthless Bran and says.. let's give the crown to one of the most useless characters in this series... assuming you make me the hand.. piece of shit...

I don't want to rip them since they are also in charge of the next Star Wars trilogy, but Netflix better have some good completed source material now that they are giving David Benioff and D.B. Weiss 200 mil to create shows and movies for them. I'm pretty sure that doesn't include production costs so add in at least 10M/episode for anything they create. Evidently NetFlix forgot to watch GoT after B&W ran out of books to base the show off of.

Hell yeah. I know the ending was trash, but I still had fun watching. Two of the most entertaining episodes (imo) were in the final season (battles at Winterfell and King's Landing were awesome, despite the bullshittery with the story).

I'll give it a watch.

Miguel Sipochnik as showrunner gives me hope. He was the director of those two episodes you mention, along with Winds of Winter (Cersei blowing up the Sept) and the Battle of the Bastards.

Those are some of the best episodes in TV history. I hadn't dug that far into who was making the new stuff (expected disappointment to be honest), but I am also happy to hear this!
