Ill break it down for you.
Iowa
Quarterback- Drew Tate is the starter obviously, he is undersized and could get seriously injured against our defense. He is tough ill give him that, but that doesnt make him untouchable. The back-up is one of the worst quarterbacks in college football.
Runningback- No one impresses me here. The Hawkeyes have somewhat struggled to run the ball this year, despite playing Ball State, and Northern Iowa. I think that they aren't that much better at this position then they were last year.
Offensive Line- This unit hasnt meet expectations. Ferentz according to most Iowa fans, has been a disappointment at center, and they dont really have anyone that stands out at all on this line. They have struggled opening holes, and in pass protection.
Wide Recievers- Solomon is one of the better recievers that no one gives credit too. He has good size, and average speed, but can make plays. Ed Hinkel has great hands but lacks speed. I havent even heard a word about any other reciever on this team, so Im going to say that they wont be a factor into this game.
Defensive Line- Undersized, No experience, Inconsistent. They cant generate a pass-rush, and consistently get blown off of the line of scrimmage, they havent looked good in any games thus far this year, and that wont change soon thanks to the youth.
Linebackers- Greenway has been disappointing this year according to some Hawkeye fans, despite being named the defensive player of the week. Hodge is a good middle linebacker who is tough and physical, Ed Miles is the third starter, and lacks size but can run.
Secondary- Jovon Johnson and Antwan Allen both lack size, and arent the quickest guys on the field. However, they were solid last year. I havent heard if Allen will play, but Id put money on it that he will. The safeties are mediocre, and arent really stout against the run, or in pass coverage
Hey Bucks, just thought I'd throw my two cents in here as this board seems to have the best football discussion of all the OSU forums.
QB: Tate is a firey emotional leader, sometimes too much so as evidenced by the concussion he gave himself after laying a hit on the ISU safety that he threw a pick to. His movement within the pocket has been uncanny and can run when it's available, and has learned to avoid contact rather than seek it out. Our backup got his first game action against ISU in a tough spot. Good experience for him, but not so good results. My guess is next time he's needed he will fare better. No need to go into Drew's passing ability as it speaks for itself.
RB: Our new RBs might surprise you a little when you see them on Saturday. Remember the name Albert Young...he is for real and a tough runner. Don't really care for comparisons to elite backs, but he does have similarities in style to Emmitt Smith. Good after first contact, not breakaway speed at this point coming off an ACL repair. Behind him is a big solid freshman, Shonn Greene, who needs to learn how to hold on to the ball, and then steady senior Marcus Schnoor. We should be set at RB for a few years to come as we have Kelvin "The Bus" Bailey redshirting this year (#1 FB recruit in the nation).
WR: Solid, not necessarily spectacular, but do have big play potential. Hinkel catches everything thrown his way and Solomon has good size and decent speed. TE's have been inconsistent, but true frosh Tony Moeaki has been impressive and will probably be a starter in a few more games.
OL: Have been very good run blocking, not so hot pass blocking so far. ISU exposed them a little in this way by throwing every blitz known to man at them. Our run game is definitely improved and I'm hoping will actually be a factor against the stout Buckeye defense.
DL: Young, pretty deep, talented, but very inexperienced. They've done a good job against the run, but have provided no pressure on the QB. Whether their ready for a game at the Shoe yet remains to be seen. If we can shut down your run game I like our chances against a throwing Smith.
LB: Nothing much more to talk about here. Ours are good, yours are good.
CB: Same philosophy we've always had...deep zone coverage, let the receiver catch it in front and then pound the crap out of him. If we can't get a pass rush and Smith is patient with the short outs and crossing patterns we're in deep doodoo. I don't see him being successful if he tries to go downfield repeatedly. Run support from this group, even though the corners are undersized has been very solid and neither Johnson nor Allen shy away from contact.
P: Two guys have been sharing duties and both are doing a quality job. This will continue until one shows superiority. Almost going every other punt. Hopefully we won't need them much.
K: Solid with a strong leg. Definitely one of the best in the conference, as Houston has shown as well.
KR/PR: Solid, but not spectacular. Haven't made mistakes, but aren't a great threat to take it to the house without great blocking.
Overall I see this game playing out a few different ways. Either Smith has a good day passing due to a run game to loosen up our pass rush efforts, or we stuff the run and our offense scores enough to get by. The key will be our respective weaknesses (your O vs our D) as to who gets the advantage.
As always any big TOs or special teams plays will play a huge factor in what should be a close hard hitting, typical Big Ten game (see Bob Sanders getting blocked in the back on Jenkins punt return to offset Kaeding's TD run and blatant hold).
Here's to some good discussion and then one heck of a game on Saturday with no injuries for either side.
