Game Thread Game Four: Ohio State 31, Iowa 6 (final)

I can tell you why I'm very confident about this game

#1 They have played NIU and Ball State both should be DIV 1AA schools.

#2 The only BCS team they have played they got pounded

#3 Their defense is very overated. We have told Hawkeye fans over and over that their DL would kill them this year and it will.

#4 They are worse on the OL and have no running game.

#5 Our defense and special teams are both in the top 3 in the country and the game is at home.

IMO we were hung over from the Texas game. I was pissed about our offensive output but in reality we are better than we were at this time last year. Troy only has 1 and a half games PT this year.

Our margin of victory this year is a hell of alot more comfortable than last year. We have blown out two teams that may have been 7 point wins last year. Both games were well in hand by halftime.

I agree that our offense isn't where it should be but the Hawkeyes are not as good as last year. They are not half as good in the trenches as last year.

All I hear is bitching and moaning about our offense. Well we got beat by the #2 team in the country but the other games we won comfortably. Its the first time since Tressel has been here that we have won 2 non-conference games comfortably. The offense will improve all year long. We are averaging 27 PPG. With the defense and special teams we have there is not a team left on the schedule that can beat us if we score 28 points.

We are gonna beat the Hawkeyes badly. I think this may be the reciprical of last years game.

Granted we haven't played any competition to this point other that ISU, and that game was miserable, but we did have a similar miserable game against ASU last year and rebounded to do okay.

We looked like a monkey f____ a football in the game vs. the clones with five TOs.

Our DL is just fine, but inexperienced. They do well against the run; a lack of pass rush is the achilles heel right now, but I'm not sure if the Bucks offense is geared to take advantage of that.

Our OL is actually much improved and we have shown a good running game with Albert Young at the forefront. Shonn Greene will back him up and is a bruising freshman with good speed.

No doubt that the Shoe will have an impact, especially if you guys get out of the gate quickly. I'll be interested to see if your defense has indeed improved as much as you say (top 3) since last year's game, because our offense definitely has (when Tate can keep from knocking himself out).

If you guys jump out quick, I don't see the Hawkeyes' day going very well, but if we can hang in there for the first half a quarter or so, I like our chances.

I'm not understanding why we are so cocky right now...

Seems like a replay of last year's pregame trashtalking.

Tate can't do this...their running game is terrible...blah, blah, blah.

60 minutes of hell later, there were tears in our beers.

Be humble...we have not done a thing yet.
He's still overrated. I'm not cocky, he's just overrated.

I have absolutely ZERO ANALYSIS with which to back this up. I could write some up, but it would be lies, damned lies and carefully tweaked statistics.

No what I have is pure and simple a gut feel -- that this is the game in which we see the team FULLY gel, in which we do see something like a break-out on Offense, and where we take a strong measure of vengeance for last years loss.

Here on some up to date season stats which I think are much more reliable than NCAA rankings:

What I see in comparing these stats is an Iowa offense that has far underperformed ours while facing weaker competition. For example, in the running game they have averaged 5.5 yards per rush, but their opponents are also giving up 5.5 ypr. Our opponents are only allowing 3.8 ypr, which is exactly what we are gaining. Conversely, if you look at our rushing defense we are only allowing 2 ypr against teams that are averaging 4.5 ypr. Iowa is allowing 2.5 ypr to teams that average 2.8 ypr. If these trends continue, I'd look for Iowa to rush for anywhere between 70 and 90 yards on Saturday while we rush for somewhere close to 125 to 135.

Going to the game?
No, I wish. Living down here in Texas and have season tickets already...going to C'bus is just a little too much to spring for. (fuck)

Dude after him, don't get lost in the stats, they suck. You should know as well as we Hawkeyes do that stats don't mean shit when you've got good special teams and a TO margin.

Grad, I couldn't agree more.....I am very concerned about several areas...

1. Quarterback
2. Offensive Line
3. Pass Rush

We have some work to do this week....Tate scares the hell out of me, he can make plays with his feet and arm.

Both the OL and pass rush are coming along, I think. I'm encouraged that the coaches made moves this week in the two-deep. QB play has been so beaten to death that I'm afraid to touch it, but the light's got to come on here for Troy. It's showtime now.

One area of concern that I've got is still the overall running game, and the OL is only part of that. Pittman has come along, but we're still lacking there. Schnitt's fumble didn't encourage me much, either, but I really think that was an anomaly.

Last year's Iowa game was so poorly played that I can't take it as any indication that Tate "has our number" or any such thing. He had one of his best games of the year on a day when OSU phoned one in, that's all. I'm more concerned about Iowa being able to contain Smith's running...can he win a game with his arm? Not the same arm he was using during the Texas and SDSU games, that's for sure.

All I know is our defense seemed to have clicked after last year's Iowa game. Nothing against Drew Tate as he is a very good QB but we faced a more elusive runner in Vince Young and besides taking 2 series to get use to his speed we shut him down. In other words our defense is hitting on all cylinders and that makes me a ton more confident heading into this weekend.

It is just odd, at the beginning of the year I thought this would be a difficult game but for some reason I am very calm about this weekend and I almost want to say this might relieve alot of Buckeye fans as we get payback for last year with a "blowout" win in the area of 24-7.
