Game Thread Game Four: #1 Ohio State 28, #24 Penn State 6 (9/23/06)

My player of the Game .. For the second week in a row Pittman He is the best running back we have had since Eddie ( Oh wow I have to think about that)

Not a bad game considering the weather and wind. Even though we should be able to make plays. I thought our O line would do better against the rushes and stunts Penn did.

On thing I thought was one of the best I have seen in years was the stands by the D line Both at the 20 and the goal line. I cant remember seeing two like that in years.
I think Ginn is out of the Heisman race.
Jenkins will be a stud at D. why was that receiver 4 yards behind him on the TD interception?
A great play by Walk on Smith. Very well read and executed. That play was not an accident, He had it nailed

All in all a good game especially considering the competion. They came to play.

10 things I learned from the game:

Ohio State:
1. Defense is spectacular
2. Our offense is great but they're coming out slow
3. Laurinatis and Jenkins are the best at their positions in the Big Ten
4. Terry should be starting over either Kerr or Freeman
5. Quinn Pitcock is the best DT in the country

Penn State:
1. Dan Connor is GOOD
2. Tony Hunt is a very solid running back
3. Morelli is not developing so far
4. Penn State defense is underrated
5. They need to give D-Will the ball more.

I disagree respectfully and politely. Our defense dominated their offense totally. Our D line ruined their day. and the DB's added salt into the wound.
Granted the offense didnt exactly sparkle and shine. but overall they played well enough to win. even without the Defense's scoring help.

I don't have data to back this up, and I have way too much on my plate today to spend time researching this; but my impression over the years is that the Buckeyes have always played a little out-of-sorts on the week when they start class.

With OSU on the quarter system, and most other teams on the semester system; you can bet that our opponent on the week when classes start has already adjusted to the school schedule. I have had the impression for a long time that this seemed to have an effect more often than not.

With OSU having started class this past week, totally changing the daily schedule of everyone on the team; we were bound to have a bit of a let down. That, combined with the weather and the field conditions made execution tricky for the offense. It makes sense intuitively that the offense would be more affected than the defense, but again, I have no data to back this up at this point. Just an impression based on watching the Bucks for a few decades.

I hate to complain about the refs, especially since they didn't even pull an Oklahoma on the Buckeyes, so how bad could they be? But if I hadn't watched the Wisconsin-Michigan game before the Ohio State game, I would have thought that the officials normally reserved for the games Michigan is in were sent to Columbus, instead, and told that Michigan was wearing all white. Penn State seemed to get away with holds on EVERY big play, the way it seems that Michigan gets away with them in every big play in their games. (I know that it wasn't the typical Michigan referee crew because Michigan was getting away with some pretty bad non-calls in their game earlier.)

And with that roughing the kicker, I've only gotten a chance to see the replay once. They only showed the replay once. I'll go look at it again, later. (Maybe when the Browns go down 24-0 at the begining of the second quarter I'll watch the Ohio State game.) But it seemed to me that the kicker had BOTH feet on the ground, and then Jenkins landed next to the kicker, and then the kicker fell over. Great job of acting by the kicker. Does anyone else agree, or did Jenkins really hit the kicker? I know I'm in the minority, but I actually feel that some players need to be protected, including the kickers. But you have to let the defense play.

I thought that JoePa was having a senior moment near the end of the second quarter. I seriously thought he was thinking, "Aww.. crap. We didn't get the first down. Let's all go to the locker room and I can do my post-game interview, and we can go home."

Any complaints from Penn State fans on how they were treated by Ohio State fans?

The receiver (a Tight End, I believe) was probably running his route. Jenkins, who was probably in a zone defense, was playing the quarterback and the ball. Jenkins jumped WAY up to get that ball. The receiver was probably where the ball was going to land. Maybe the receiver needed to come back to the ball to make a play on it.

I never thought about that but that could be. If it is true then the next game will be awesome. I'm a 6 decade watcher myself .

MM.Hmmm

Jenkins played the ball the way he's taught to play the ball. When Morelli threw it, MJ was in a position where he could have adjusted to it even if it was overthrown. He simply went to where he would HAVE TO jump high to get it - it's called high-pointing the ball. He could have caught the ball if it had been overthrown too, but he would have been tackled immediately.

No way. Iowa has soundly beaten Montana ... that's it. They struggled with Syracuse, they struggled with Iowa State, and they weren't very impressive in handling Illinois. Drew Tate may be an experienced, veteran QB, but so what? He still has to throw the ball to somebody. Iowa has NO wide receivers. None. Nada. Zero. Zip. Cover the tight end, contain the run (whether it's Albert Young or a scrambling Drew Tate), and Iowa will wither pretty quickly.

I agree with you , I kinda watched that Iowa game and kept wondering why and how Ill was even in that game . It was like 0 0 way late in the first half if I remember

Regarding the refs, it seemed like both scoring "drives" that Penn State had involved key third down conversions given to them thanks to some questionable calls by the refs. I need to go back and look at it, but I think that there were a couple questionable pass interferance calls on both drives and a whole lot of no calls for us (Gonza got draped on the 3 and 1 in the fouth quarter and the holding on Gholston are two that spring to mind). But my point I guess is that "they beat themselves" isn't true. I think that we didn't just beat Penn State yesterday, but also the weather and the refs.
