Butler's job includes shutting down top scorers

COLUMBUS ? Jamar Butler has become Ohio State's lead dog for defending opponents' scoring guards.
That's quite a change from high school, when he just dogged it.

"I played no defense," Butler said Tuesday at the Schottenstein Center. "I just shot the ball. That's all I did."

Plain Dealer Reporter
San Antonio- Jamar Butler's first attempt to impress his Ohio State coaches while wearing a Buckeye uniform ended with a disastrous phone call to head coach Thad Matta, who was on the road recruiting.
"Jamar Butler can't play at Ohio State," assistant coach John Groce told Matta.

The Gatekeeper

Jim Naveau - 03.22.2007
COLUMBUS ? Ohio State was minutes from getting on the bus to head for the airport on Tuesday for its trip to San Antonio to play Tennessee in the Sweet 16 of the men?s NCAA basketball tournament tonight when a journey of another kind brought a smile to Jamar Butler?s face.
The junior guard from Shawnee High School emerged as one of the best backcourt defenders in the Big Ten last season and has raised his level of play at the defensive end even higher this season. It is a part of his game that was sometimes unexplored territory before he got to Ohio State, though.
?Honestly, in high school I played no defense. I just shot the ball,? Butler said, with a smile.

Jamar Butler, junior guard

On the match-up against Georgetown

"It should be a great match-up. We just need to stay focus on doing what we have been doing all year. We try to get better each day in practice because we have had a lot of time to prepare for this game."

On playing in the Final Four

"We are playing in the Final Four and you really can't ask for more than that. This is a dream come true."

Butler living the dream in Final Four
Jim Naveau - 03.29.2007
[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]COLUMBUS ? When Jamar Butler committed to play basketball at Ohio State in the summer of 2003, he mentioned that his good friend Matt Terwilliger already was a Buckeye and said, ?I think we?ll have a pretty good career at Ohio State.?
They have already put ?pretty good? in the rear-view mirror and are on the edge of dream-come-true territory with No. 1 Ohio State headed to the Final Four in Atlanta this weekend.
The Buckeyes (34-3) will play Georgetown (30-6) at 6:07 p.m. Saturday in a semifinal game in the NCAA men?s basketball championship. Florida and UCLA play in the other semifinal.
Butler, of Shawnee High School, and Terwilliger, of Troy, became friends when they were AAU basketball teammates. Butler has started since the middle of his freshman season. Terwilliger has been a backup at the post and power forward positions throughout his college career.
The two haven?t taken a lot of time to reflect on how well their decision to team up at OSU has turned out, but the subject has come up, Terwilliger said on Tuesday.

Now why did I do that this early. I know that if I read just one article about a Buckeye I get all jazzed up and we still have 10 1/2 hours to go. I wonder if the carry out is open . :)

i really hope that butler reflects on his lackluster 3-point shooting in the tournament and uses that as fuel to work that much harder in the off-season. disregarding the ccsu game, he was 9-of-31 (29%) from distance during the tournament. i wonder if part of his drop-off was due to conditioning. i don't know. it's just a thought. starting with the second wisky game, jamar was 17-of-54 (31%). before that second wisky game, jamar was 41% from behind the arc.

thanks for all of your hard work this season, jamar. best of luck during the off months. we can't wait to see what you will do during your final season.

edit: i recognize that the beginning of this message comes off a bit too harsh. that was not my intent. i know that jamar is a hard worker and will continue to hone his shot. though i didn't set expectations for him (who am i to set expectations for one of our players?), i did think that butler would be shooting closer to a 45% clip for the season.
