G Jamar Butler (Official Thread)

I talked with Jamar Butler today. Whatever hopes he had of being drafted were pretty much dashed by a hamstring injury he suffered when he said he did ?the splits? during a drill at the pre-draft camp in Orlando last month. He worked out for Indiana and Portland earlier this month but canceled further workouts after aggravating the injury.

He still thinks he has a chance of being drafted, but ?I?m not expecting it,? he said. ?If it happens, I?ll be happy.?

Butler, who was the most valuable player of the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in April after leading his team to the championship, said he has heard from three NBA teams about him playing for them in one of the summer leagues.

?Many of the teams that I spoke with were surprised at his explosiveness when he played in Portsmouth,? Butler?s agent, John Spencer of Raleigh, N.C., wrote in an e-mail. ?He turned a lot of heads and will continue to surprise a lot of teams. The most intriguing thing about Jamar is that he does not make a lot of mistakes.?

Butler averaged 14 points and 3.3 assists and did not have a turnover in three games in Portsmouth.

What about ... ?
Sunday, June 22, 2008

Former Ohio State players Jamar Butler and Othello Hunter participated in the Portsmouth (Va.) Invitational Tournament in April and the NBA pre-draft camp in Orlando in May. What are their chances of being drafted?

BUTLER
He was the MVP in Portsmouth, leading his team to the championship while averaging 14 points and 3.3 assists without a turnover in three games. But he suffered a hamstring injury before games began in Orlando and did not play there. He had workouts with Indiana and Portland after that but aggravated the injury and has turned down other teams' invitations since. Chances he will be drafted are slim, but he hopes to play in one of the NBA summer leagues and go from there.

Another injury seals deal for Butler

Scratch that chance Jamar Butler had for a spot on the New Jersey Nets? summer-league team.

Butler?s agent, John Spencer, confirmed by e-mail tonight that the former Ohio State point guard won?t be joining the Nets after aggravating the hamstring injury he first suffered during the Orlando pre-draft camp in May.

Instead, Spencer said, Butler is close to signing with a team in Italy for next season.

Butler reinjured the hamstring yesterday working out in his hometown of Lima, Ohio, Spencer said. He?ll have plenty of time to rehabilitate it now before the Italian league season begins in the fall.

Basketball: Butler's pro career will start in Italy

The Lima News

Former Ohio State guard Jamar Butler is going to Italy.

Butler signed a one-year contract with Caserta, Italy, on Tuesday to play in the A1 Italian professional basketball league. He will report to Caserta on Aug. 18. The season runs through June.

"To be honest, he's ecstatic about it," said Butler's agent, John Spencer. "This is a great situation for him."

Spencer said Butler will have an "out clause" in his contract in the event he is contacted by an NBA team during the Italian season.

Caserta plans to use Butler as a point guard, Spencer said.

Jamar Butler pregame sighting

I just spoke with Jamar Butler -- he has a shaved head -- outside the Ohio State locker room in St. John Arena. He said he left the team he was playing for in Italy because he wasn't getting along with the coach and that his agent is looking for a job for him in several other European countries.

"After a suffered cohabitation with coach Fabrizio Frates, Butler was left out during last two games," it was reported on Eurobasket.com.

Butler averaged 7.3 points in three games and shot 25 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range.

Butler's departure was announced in a one-sentence press release posted on the team's web site on Nov. 19, which said his contract had been terminated.

Jamar Butler ready to sign with Turkish team
December 19, 2008

LIMA - Former Ohio State and Shawnee High School standout Jamar Butler is close to signing a contract to play professional basketball in Turkey, his agent John Spencer said on Friday.

"He should be leaving in the next couple days. I'm just waiting for the contract," Spencer said.

Butler expects to sign with a team called Ted Kolej in Ankara, Turkey. The four-year starter at Ohio State played briefly for Eldo Caserta in the Italian professional leagues earlier this season.

Butler, a 6-foot, 2-inch guard, averaged 7.3 points a game in two regular-season games in Italy. Injuries and disagreements between the coach and Butler led him to ask out of his contract, according to media reports.

"They can write it however they want to," Spencer said of Eldo Caserta. "They were satisfied with the way he was playing."

Butler would be arriving around the mid-point of the Turkish professional season, giving him the possibility of playing in around 18 or 19 games, Spencer said.
