Ohio State Buckeyes men's basketball guard Jamar Butler a tough nut to crack

Friday, March 14, 2008Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- On the same June day in 2004 that Jamar Butler finished a tour of the Ohio State dorms, he found out his coach had been fired. Four years later, everything about Buckeyes men's basketball has changed except OSU's senior point guard.
The winningest player in Ohio State history, so famously grumpy after defeats, has been the con stant, the link from coach Jim O'Brien to coach Thad Matta, from center Terence Dials to center Kosta Koufos, from a 2005 postseason ban to the 2007 Final Four. Over four years, he has started 111 games with 15 other players, switched positions from point guard to shooting guard and back again, emerged as Ohio State's all-time leader in assists and 3-pointers, and made his name as a defender, distributor and scorer.
"We always felt like no matter who came or who went, he was always kind of the glue," said his mother, Nancy. "He was always a needed piece to the puzzle no matter what team it was."

All the while, he remained a mystery.

Great ovation for Jamar last night - what a fantastic career he's had in the scarlet and grey. Let's hope he goes out with two more wins!

Lantern linkage

Butler, alongside forwards Matt Terwilliger and Othello Hunter set foot on the Schottenstein Center court for the final time in Wednesday's victory.

"It was an emotional high knowing it's the last time I was going to play in this building," Butler said. "(I want to) thank the fans. They're the greatest fans in the world."

Though the Buckeyes harbored hopes of playing in the biggest tournament of all five months ago, the team is accepting of the current situation and realizes what remains on the line for the program next week in the Big Apple.

"Even though it's the NIT it's still a tournament," Butler said. "And we want to win this thing."

Props to Jamar. I think that he has given so much to The Ohio State University basketball program in his four years. I really don't think he has got the national, or even regional, recognition that he deserves. It was nice to hear the announcers during last night's game give him some accolades.

But seriously, is his ankle OK?? Will he be close to, if not 100%.
No runner-up again...in anything!
Bring it home Jamar!!

No idea about the ankle. I was noting that he can't compete in the contest because it falls on the same day as the NIT championship.

No, I got that...and thanks for the reply. We're all glad, I'm sure, (even though I was not aware that he is a contestant), that he can't compete in the Final4 3pt-biz :).

But, I believe he did actually tweak his ankle last night real late in the game. Just very concerned for him, thats all, obviously, anxious about his status and ability, and as an added bonus, given the fact that we are getting a rep as 'Runner-Up U'. Not that nightmare, possibly, again. Nauseating!!

If he's healthy...Bucks all the way!!!!!

If there is something known as a bad "tweak", I think that is what Butler probably had last night. I think if it would have happened earlier in the game they would have retaped it last night and he would have been fine. I am not concerned about his status for tomorrow night. He will be a go no matter what.

You have to listen to the stupid announcers:biggrin: on TV sometime because they did mention that he was going to miss the three-point shooting contest tomorrow night. It is on after the ballgame along with the dunk contest. He will miss that also:biggrin2:

Thanks for the clarification, very much appreciated!! Not concerned that he plays...no doubt about that. Just hope he's close to 100% effective.

You hit the nail on the head, thank you, I do NOT listen to games and the, 'stupid announcers'. Always have headphones on w/music!! But even w/that, I saw that they had addressed his ankle and (graph-circled) it. Wasn't sure status, tried different web sources regarding severity w/not much luck. You have been the best help. Thanks, again!

Ohio State's Butler going out in style

By Dave Skretta
Associated Press

Thursday, April 03, 2008
NEW YORK ? Ohio State's Jamar Butler didn't expect his college basketball career to end in Madison Square Garden, in the title game of a tournament that masquerades as the consolation prize for all those teams that had good but not great seasons.
A year ago, he was on the NCAA's biggest stage, playing for a national championship under the brightest of lights. Tonight, April 3, he'll lead the Buckeyes (23-13) into the final of the NIT against Massachusetts (25-10).

"This is still a tournament and a way to keep playing," said the 6-foot-1 guard, who's played a school-record 138 games in a career that often seems longer than four seasons. "We have young guys stepping up, and we're playing the best we have all year."
Butler arrived at Ohio State with coach Thad Matta, together inheriting a program that was successful under Jim O'Brien but had landed on probation. The Buckeyes won 20 games Butler's freshman season but sat at home come March, unable to participate in any postseason tournament. A year later, OSU won 26 and reached the NCAA tournament's second round.

Congrats to Jamar Butler on a great career at Ohio State! You were not only an excellent basketball player, but also proved to be a team guy when you moved from Point when Conley came. You were always smooth and in control on the court, and I hope you get a shot at the next level and make a solid career of it.
