G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Mentioned Turner in my blog. (Yes, I'm whoring myself. So what?)

Evan Turner did what great Ohio State players do best today - make Michigan feel like they deserve to be around, then do something amazing and show them why Ohio State has dominated them for such a long stretch of time. It was like many of the epic OSU/Michigan football games. Not so much recent ones, though.

Down by 2 points with 2.2 seconds left on the clock, Turner received an in-bound pass from David Lighty and crossed half-court. Turner reached about halfway between the three-point line and half-court and took a shot. Actually, I take that back. That wasn't a shot. That was a dagger. It was a sword. It was yet another fantastic moment of greatness against our rivals from the north. These moments will never be forgotten. No matter what Evan Turner does in the NBA, he'll be considered an all-time great at Ohio State. He's been excellent on and off the court. Sounds cliche', but he's everything you want your athletes to be. Helps that he did things that few other Buckeyes have ever done.

Beauty.

Best of luck in the rest of the tournament, Evan and the rest of the Buckeyes. Today's game was well-earned. Michigan played one of their best games of the season and it wasn't enough.

Turner makes sure the Bucks don’t stop
By Gerry Ahern, Yahoo! Sports Mar 12

INDIANAPOLIS – Evan Turner’s grin was positively radiant as he stood midcourt at Conseco Fieldhouse on Friday, raising his left index finger high in the air.

Turner’s No. 1 gesture was symbolic, perhaps on multiple fronts. His last-second heroics had just lifted top-seeded Ohio State to a thrilling 69-68 victory over upstart Michigan in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals, allowing the favorites to survive and advance.

Evan Turner makes miracles happen for Ohio State
Mike DeCourcy

INDIANAPOLIS – It was a dare, as much as anything. That's how Michigan played it at the end. To the best player in NCAA basketball this particular season, the Wolverines issued the following challenge: How far can you travel in 2.1 seconds, and once you arrive will you have the nerve, the grace and the skill to connect on the biggest shot of your career?

article.jpeg

Evan Turner wound up with 18 points and eight assists vs. Michigan.

Really, now: Someone's willing to defy Ohio State's Evan Turner to make a play? What other result might be expected in that circumstance?

"The whole game, they were swarming me," Turner said, still amazed as much by how he was defended as the moment he was free to create. "They gave me one good look."

Oh, it wasn't that good a look. Even though Michigan had chosen not to contest David Lighty's inbound pass, and even though Turner was able to catch it at full speed and turn immediately in the direction of the OSU goal, and even though the Wolverines guard Stu Douglass never got close enough to bother Turner as he fired, it still, after all, was a 37-foot jumpshot.

How many of those is a player going to make, even the Sporting News national Player of the Year? Lighty said when the Buckeyes fool around after practice, Turner is among the worst at hitting halfcourt heaves. So maybe that should read: especially the Sporting News national player of the year.

Why would you let Evan Turner catch the ball?
Posted on: March 12, 2010

Michigan had five players on the court.

One. Two. Three. Four. Five.

And yet John Beilein didn't use any of them to A) guard the inbound guy, or B) deny Evan Turner the ball. So guess what happened? In a span of 2.2 seconds, Turner -- otherwise known as the CBSSports.com National Player of the Year -- looped around without interruption, caught a clean pass, took two dribbles and launched a 37-footer that swished and gave Ohio State a 69-68 win in Friday's Big Ten quarterfinals.

My God.

If I live to be 99 -- and I hope I do -- I'll never understand why coaches don't put somebody on the inbound guy. Cincinnati didn't do it Thursday night, which allowed Da'Sean Butler to catch a clean pass and hit a game-winner. I watched that, went to bed, woke up, turned the TV back on, and watched Michigan use and fail with the same strategy

Absolutely insane.

And how do you even let Turner touch the ball?

He's the one person on the court you absolutely don't watch touching it if you're Michigan. But the Wolverines let him catch the ball and fly up the court with no resistance, and they paid the price they deserved to pay for not learning from Rick Pitino's greatest coaching mishap.

Remember the Christian Laettner shot in the 1992 East Regional?

It happened, at least in part, because Pitino put nobody on the inbound guy.

This was similar in that it made no sense.

And now Michigan is responsible for enhancing the legend of an Ohio State star.

Just perfect.

Unless you're Michigan.

Has Evan Turner pushed to the top overall pick prospect?
Fri Mar 12,2010
By Matt Moore

What does March Madness mean for an NBA fan? Showcasing draft picks. That's what.

And with conference play in full swing, we're in the grips of a tidal wave of surge for Ohio State standout Evan Turner as a number one overall prospect, even over uber-prospect John Wall, who has been projected as the top pick, since, well, I think since he was born.

Turner has been phenomenal this year, and is a near-lock for Player of the Year (named it for Sporting News). He added to the highlight reel today with this unfathomable game-winning shot against Michigan in the Big 10 tournament.

Turner is older than Wall, and Wall's combination of vision, athleticism, speed, and length combined with the high value of point guards in the NBA will probably be enough to keep him in the top spot. But say the Nets come to the conclusion that LeBron isn't coming, and don't want to trade Devin Harris. Adding Turner to Harris-Lopez would make for a stellar young triad, along with some depth.

Or how about the Timberwolves, who need to draft another point guard like they need a a pretty boy Euro-guard who doesn't like snow. Wait, no, the old phrase goes "a kick in the head." Whatever. The Wolves would leap at the chance to take Turner, team him with Rubio in 2016 when Rubio's last appeal fails, and have a contending team in 2015.

It might make for an interesting debate, the likes of which we haven't seen since Durant-Oden.

OSU's Turner is also a hero away from the court

Evan Turner is the best basketball player in the Big Ten. He is also one of the nicest guys.

This isn?t news to those who cover him, but it was re-affirmed again last night in a T.G.I.Friday?s in downtown Indianapolis, where I chanced to be sitting at the bar having a late dinner when Turner?s mom came in.

Two Wisconsin fans welcomed her, gave her a chair between them and bought her a drink while she waited for some of other mothers. At one point one of the TVs showed her son hitting that incredible 37-foot shot to beat Michigan with .2 seconds left and she shouted ?That?s my baby!? while everyone laughed.

Bob Hunter commentary: Turner has last word with mouthy Illini

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

INDIANAPOLIS - Illinois tried to trash talk Evan Turner off his game, an interesting way to attack a guy who might be the national player of the year.

At first glance, it seems a lot like walking up to a grizzly bear and giving him a sharp jab in the ribs. But then if you can't stop the Ohio State star, and so far no one has, this would seem as good a way as any to try to do that. Sending two and three defenders his way doesn't work, because he almost always finds the open man. Sending one can be humiliating, like trying to stop a tank with your hands.

So if trash talking, getting a little too physical and trying to make him mad seems kind of tacky, well, they have to do something. The Illini were fighting for their NCAA Tournament lives and had been beaten by the Buckeyes by 19 and 16 points this season.

"Yeah, we got in his head a little bit and made him frustrated, made him turn the ball over," Illinois point guard Demetri McCamey said. "We played real good on him tonight, I believe."

Turner has last word after game full of trash talk
March 14, 2010
BY HERB GOULD Staff Reporter

INDIANAPOLIS -- It's the game within the game. It's called trash-talking, a combination of braggadocio and pushing of emotional buttons. And it was rampant when Illinois and Ohio State tangled Saturday.

''Trash-talking is a part of basketball,'' Illini star Demetri McCamey said. ''There's nothing negative said. We're just saying, 'Let's get it on.'''

INDIANAPOLIS -- There?s a line for Ohio State junior Evan Turner when it comes to trash talking.

On Saturday, he felt Illinois crossed it during Ohio State?s 88-81 double overtime in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

?They were saying stuff to me, saying stuff out loud,? said Turner, a Chicago West Side native. ?It was almost like, ?We beat you guys twice already. Don?t lose your mind.? It wasn?t cool.?

Most of the talking Saturday came from Turner?s former St. Joseph High School teammate, Illini point guard Demetri McCamey.

McCamey, who finished with 22 points, four rebounds, five assists and four steals, admitted to giving Turner a little extra earful, but he didn?t think it was a big deal.

?Everybody was just getting into it, the emotions of the game, the physicalness of the game,? McCamey said. ?Everybody was going out trying to compete. Everyone was trash talking. It wasn?t ... strategy. It was just part of the game. If he was talking to me, I?m going to talk back to him and try to play.

?There was more pushing and shoving and trash-talking than normal, but at the same time, you have no friends on the basketball court. We?re still best friends off the court. It wasn?t nothing to be blown up about.?

Turner disagreed. Afterward in the locker room, Turner was visibly upset about what had been said -- though he wouldn?t disclose specifics.

?I was just playing ball,? Turner said. ?They weren?t trying to play. They were just trying to talk more and embarrass you and stuff.?

Ohio State's Evan Turner signs autographs after Ohio State defeated Minnesota 90-61 in an NCAA college basketball game in the final of the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis, Sunday, March 14, 2010. Turner was named MVP of the tournament.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Thad Matta had just seen Evan Turner carry Ohio State in overtime, scoring or assisting on 14 of the Buckeyes' 22 overtime points in their 88-81 win over Illinois on Saturday. There had been mistakes early, but in the end, as usual, his star took over the game.

"We're gonna ride him," Matta said.

Bob Hunter commentary: Turner's feats are quickly becoming legendary
Monday, March 15, 2010
By Bob Hunter
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

INDIANAPOLIS - When Ohio State big man Dallas Lauderdale was asked if he was amazed by what teammate Evan Turner did this weekend, he shook his head.

"I see it every day in practice, so it's not really amazement to me," Lauderdale said. "It's just Evan doing Evan."

Evan doing Evan. It seems the perfect description.

A 37-foot shot at the buzzer to avert a loss and beat Michigan on Friday. A 31-point, 10-rebound, six-assist game against Illinois on Saturday. A 31-point, 11-rebound, six-assist game in a 90-61 win over Minnesota yesterday in the Big Ten championship game.

Evan doing Evan?

Whatever he's doing, it's a little unreal.

Do All-American basketball players get a tree in the Buckeye Grove?

Upon browsing wikipedia, it looks like it's a football tradition. That's too bad - anyone know if there's any similar tradition of honoring basketball All-American players on campus?
