G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Spurred by missing out on Big Ten player of year last season, OSU's Turner wins this year; Matta shares coaching honor

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

For a player who never lacks for motivation to improve, seeing the Big Ten player of the year award go to someone else last year shifted Evan Turner into overdrive.

"I was really surprised," Turner said last night. "Definitely Kalin Lucas (of Michigan State, who won the award)

is a great player. I just thought I played well and I deserved it. I guess I didn't do well enough.

"I just figured next year we were going to win conference and I wasn't going to give anybody any reason to ever put somebody else over me."

Somebody did have a reason, actually. But it wasn't enough to alter the outcome yesterday, and Turner, who led Ohio State to a share of its third Big Ten championship in five years, was the consensus choice of coaches and the media as the Big Ten player of the year.

First team
G James Anderson, junior, Oklahoma State. As he fought off an early shooting slump, Anderson became a more varied scorer. Again making jumpers, he's putting up cartoonish numbers.

G Scottie Reynolds, senior, Villanova. Once mostly a hot-or-not scorer, Reynolds mastered the pick-and-roll and became the driving force of a consistently overwhelming offensive machine.

G Evan Turner, junior, Ohio State. He missed six games because of a broken back, but his contributions as a scorer, rebounder and playmaker outweighed his absence.

G Greivis Vasquez, senior, Maryland.

After finding his way back from a dreadful start, Vasquez dominated opponents with his scoring, passing and will to win.

G John Wall, freshman, Kentucky. Though he could have excelled relying just on his extreme physical advantages, he showed leadership and maturity in reviving Kentucky.

Ohio State's Evan Turner a landslide choice as Big Ten's best player in 2009-10
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
March 08, 2010

Monday night, the obvious could not be denied.

Turner, the Ohio State junior point guard who leads the league in scoring and rebounding and ranks second in assists, became the fifth Buckeye named Big Ten Player of the Year in the 26-year history of the award. He joins Dennis Hopson (1987), Jim Jackson (1991 and 1992), Scoonie Penn (1999) and Terence Dials (2006).

Turner was chosen in separate voting by both the media and the coaches, though only the media choice was unanimous. So he didn't sway everyone his way -- but almost everyone.

"I was really surprised," Turner said of the vote a year ago. "Kalin Lucas was a good player, but I thought I played well. I guess I didn't do well enough and I figured next year we'll win the conference, and I'm not going to give anybody a reason to pick somebody over me."

Evan Turner made a seamless transition from the frontcourt to point guard this year.

Before a January ceremony honoring Ohio State's 1960 national championship team, a nervous Evan Turner broke the trophy he was to hand Jerry Lucas.

It wouldn't be the last precious item he'd break that belonged to a Buckeyes legend.

During a record-setting junior season, "Evan Almighty" piled up a record seven Big Ten player of the week awards despite missing more than four weeks with a fracture in his lower back.

He joined Jim Jackson as the only Buckeyes with 1,000 career points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists.

He leads the league in scoring and rebounding?as a point guard.

For all of that, Turner joins Lucas, the 1961 and '62 winner, as the only Buckeyes to be named Sporting News' national Player of the Year.

"He breaks his back, and they don't do so well." Northwestern forward John Shurna told SN. "He comes back, and everyone else around him plays so well."

That's just one of the qualities Big Ten opponents admire about Turner.

Minnesota coach Tubby Smith compares him to Hall of Famer Magic Johnson? "a legit 6-7 guard that can do it all."

National awards: Turning to Turner too obvious to miss

CBSSports.com Senior Writer

Evan Turner is the CBSSports.com National Player of the Year.

There's no other reasonable choice.

I started the season with John Wall and stayed with the Kentucky freshman as long as I could. But Turner's numbers and impact on both Ohio State and the national scene ultimately proved too much, and anybody who didn't switch from Wall to Turner probably should seek help for stubbornness.

Which is not to suggest Wall isn't great.

He's terrific.

And it won't surprise me if he tears through the opposition in the coming weeks and leads UK to the national title game, just like Derrick Rose did at Memphis two years ago. In fact, I'm predicting it. But that has nothing to do with this, because this is a National Player of the Year award announced the week before Selection Sunday, and any National Player of the Year award announced at this time must go to Turner, who overcame a serious injury to lead the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title and consensus top 10 ranking.

That's why he headlines the CBSSports.com National Awards.

National Player of the Year
Winner: Evan Turner (Ohio State)

Reason: Turner averaged 19.5 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.8 assists in the regular season, which ranked first, first and second in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes went 3-3 when he was out with broken bones in his back, 21-4 when he was available. Which means they were a .500 team without Turner, and a team worthy of consideration for a No. 1 seed with him.

That's incredible.

This was an easy decision.

Evan Turner will find out if he's Jeff Goodman's Player of the Year.

It's time to unveil FOXSports.com's All-American teams.

It wasn't easy.

Evan Turner took the early lead for the National Player of the Year Award, but then gave way to Kentucky freshman John Wall while he sat for a month recovering from a back injury.

It was neck-and-neck down to the wire before Turner pulled away due to astounding numbers and the fact that Ohio State might have been fortunate to get into the NIT without him in the lineup.

The Coach of the Year wasn't much easier. In fact, there was no shortage of candidates. BYU's Dave Rose was the emotional pick after he overcame pancreatic cancer in the offseason and has the Cougars in the Top 25, but it came down to four guys at the end of the day: Kansas State's Frank Martin and a trio from the Big East: Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Jamie Dixon (Pittsburgh) and Buzz Williams (Marquette).

Check out all our national awards:

Player of the Year Evan Turner, 6-7, 220, G, Jr., Ohio State

Despite missing a month of the season with a couple of broken bones in his back, we're going with the versatile Buckeyes star. His numbers were eye-popping before the nasty fall that put him on the shelf -- and have been just as impressive since his return. However, the one number that sticks out if the 21-4 mark that Ohio State has with Turner in the lineup.

FOXNews.com - 2009-10 All-American teams

Player of the year: Evan Turner (6), Ohio State. He's the clear choice over John Wall, who will get his own hardware in a couple of paragraphs. Turner doesn't just dominate his own team's stat sheet. He dominates the entire Big Ten: leads the league in scoring (19.5 ppg) and rebounding (9.4) and is second in assists (5.8) and steals (1.8). Perhaps most amazing, given his position and the scoring burden upon him, Turner is sixth in the league in field goal percentage (.538). If those numbers aren't enough for you, consider that his team won a share of the conference title and he overcame a broken back earlier in the season.

Detroit Pistons Draft Dreams: Evan Turner
By Patrick Hayes
March 09, 2010

Is he a point guard? Is he a shooting guard? Who cares. Evan Turner makes plays.

It'll be interesting if the Pistons get the second pick in the draft. The consensus best player behind John Wall is Evan Turner, and it's not even really close.

Technically, Turner might be a bit of a combo guard, something the Pistons have an abundance of. But if he's the best player available and potentially better than anyone on the Pistons roster, do they take him?

Measurables: 6-foot-7, 205-pound junior guard from Ohio State.

Stats: 19.5 points, 9.4 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.8 steals per game. Shoots 54 percent from the field and 29 percent from three.

Projected: 2nd (DraftExpress); 2nd (NBADraft.net).

Why he fits: First, apologies to Michigan fans for daring to suggest an OSU guy would be a good fit in Detroit. My only allegiance is to the Golden Grizz, so I have no biases as a result of college experience that would preclude me from thinking Evan Turner is awesome in every way.
