Turner update: No news

Coach Thad Matta said on his weekly call-in show on WBNS radio tonight that Evan Turner is "doing a little bit more every day" in practice but has not been cleared for contact, nor is he allowed to twist his injured back.

"We?re taking it as precautionary as we can," said Matta, who added that he does not know a timetable for Turner's recovery. The original prognosis was for Turner to be sidelined until the end of January. Turner has hinted that he'd like to return for the Jan.9 game at Minnesota.

"The MRI showed there was some improvement where the fractures are," Matta said, "but nothing to say he?s good to go yet."

Today we are traveling up to Ann Arbor to get ready for our game tomorrow with Michigan. We will be looking to get back on the winning track in what could be our last game without Evan ?The Villain? Turner. For those who don?t remember, The Villain broke his back a couple weeks ago and our team has struggled at times without him. He was projected to be out another month, but his rehab is going well and he could be back within the next couple games. I?m excited for The Villain?s return, mostly because I want to see if these past couple weeks will go down as the ?Brokeback Era? of his career. Either way, I?m bombarding him with Brokeback jokes and will continue to do so even when his back is fully healed.

I think we need to wait until we hear the PA announcer say and starting for Ohio State "Evan Turner".

Turner possibly back within two weeks

Evan Turner laughed when I told him during pregame warmups in Crisler Arena that Dr. Mark Titus forecast a possible return within a couple of games (see previous post). Turner said he has stopped dreaming of coming back too soon and accepted the reality of his situation.

But if all looks good when Turner's lower back is X-rayed Monday, he could be back within two weeks, said Dr. Grant Jones, the team's orthopedic surgeon.

It all depends how Turner's back, and specifically the muscles supporting the mending bones, handle the increase in activity.
So maybe Titus wasn't far off.

The Buckeyes play Indiana at home on Wednesday night before returning to the road for games at Minnesota on Saturday and Purdue on Jan. 12. Their next two games after that are at home, against Wisconsin on Jan. 16 and Northwestern on Jan. 19.

Now I know that I will wait for their PA announcer to say "Evan Turner" :) There are so many conflicting reports it's almost ridiculous.

Turner could return against Indiana

Evan Turner will be available to play against Indiana on Wednesday night if he makes it through practice tonight without complications, a source close to the program informed The Dispatch this morning.

Turner had an X-ray on his lower back yesterday, but Ohio State did not release any information on the results of the test. Coach Thad Matta said on his call-in show on WBNS radio last night that he would not know the results until after the show.

Asked yesterday on the Big Ten coaches' teleconference whether Turner would play against Indiana, Matta replied, "I don't think so."

The team's orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Grant Jones, said Sunday that Turner could return within a couple of weeks if the X-ray was good and his back was able to tolerate an increase in practice activity.

The Buckeyes are 3-3 since Evan Turner suffered two broken bones in his back Dec. 5.

Rare is the moment when coach Thad Matta lets those outside his inner circle see him sweat or, worse yet, betray a trace of despair.

One of those moments, however fleeting it was, came yesterday at a news conference dominated by questions about whether Evan Turner is ready to ride to the rescue of the beleaguered Ohio State men's basketball team.

"We could use some luck around here," Matta said.

Peppered with questions about whether Turner's back is healthy enough for him to play, Matta was vague in his answers but did not rule out the possibility that the Buckeyes' leading scorer and rebounder could return ahead of schedule to play against Indiana tonight in Value City Arena.

"I would hope," Matta said, "but I wouldn't count on that."

A decision will be made today, after all concerned gauge how Turner recovers from what was expected to be a more intense regimen for him during the team's practice last night.

"After (practice) is what I need to see. How he feels, how his body reacts," Matta said.

"You know, running in a (therapy) pool and running up and down the basketball court are two completely different things," the coach said. "He always feels good when he comes out of the swimming pool, but "

Wednesday's home game against Indiana is the first time Turner is considered a possibility to return to action, although coach Thad Matta said that's far from certain.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Could injured Ohio State star Evan Turner be back Wednesday night against Indiana, less than five weeks after breaking two bones in his back, when eight weeks was the original projection?

"I would hope," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said Tuesday, "but I wouldn't count on that."

Saturday's visit to Minnesota, which would be right at five weeks after his injury against Eastern Michigan, was the first target date that Turner really set for himself. But the plan Tuesday night was for Turner to practice more than he had at any point in his return. Then the true test is Wednesday morning, as Matta wants to see how Turner bounces back from something more than just running on a treadmill in a pool.

"I want to see how his body reacts," Matta said.

I think even if Turner says he is okay to play some tonight I would not play him until, at least, Saturday just to be on the safe side. It seems like his mother is a little concerned and I know everyone says to trust the doctors but if something would happen to him tonight it would be truly tragic and could put a blemish on the program.

In addition, even without Evan I think we can handle Indiana at home. If we can't, we are just not a very good basketball team.

I just received a text message from Evan Turner's mother, Iris James, that read, "Evan is playing."
Nothing from Ohio State yet. Visit Hoops & Scoops throughout this afternoon for more details as they become available.
Ohio State and Indiana are scheduled to tip off at 8:30 p.m. in Value City Arena. The game will be televised by Big Ten Network.

I 100% agree this basketball team should beat Indiana at home without ET but if one of their guys is on fire and the Bucks are playing as poorly as they have been it could be another L.

I love this basketball team but I can't believe it is a final 4 team with or without ET. There isn't enough size down low to hang with a bigger team like North Carolina unless the Bucks are shooting lights out from the outside.

They don't have anyone that can get hot. Matt Roth (who killed them at Assembly Hall last year) is out. They don't really have any outside threat. Nor do they have a legit inside threat. They can drive to the hoop fairly well, but don't finish at a high percentage. Creek is out. I like this matchup for the Bucks.

As long as it's okay with mom I guess Turner will see some minutes tonight.

Not the game I prefer to see him rush back to, but if he feels comfortable playing, go for it, I suppose. Hopefully it's pretty limited minutes.

My logic is it might be safer to have him play tonight. If hes healthy and he cant hurt himself go for it. Let him come in, see how he feels, and hopefully OSU is up pretty good that he can come out and there will be no pressure to leave him in. Imagine Minnesota, the game is 50-52, with 10 minutes left. Turner's play 10 minutes and is in the game and he is hurting...do you think, from everything we have seen and know about him, that he would come out of that game? Also, Matta being a competitor and in the heat of the moment would have to reach down really deep to pull him out of the game.

So I think, let him play this game, hopefully OSU is beating them handily. See how he feels, if he feels bad, or hurts tomorrow, sit him for Minny. Also for the next week and a half OSU doesnt have another home game. Anyone who has back problems knows that after they play or do something they often need some sort of therapy, and a lot of it. Whether that means laying down with an ice pack or hitting a whirlpool, im not his trainer and not sure what type of therapy is best for his back, but im sure it will be easier to recover back here in columbus than having to get on the bus after the game in minny. If he needs to lay down immediately after the game and cant move for a day, then it probably means sit him the next two games. Im pretty sold on the idea of playing tonight and seeing how he feels.
