G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Inside the Sixers: Collins showing Turner the blueprint for success
POSTED: April 10, 2011

Evan Turner is in the fire.

Coach Doug Collins is holding the 76ers rookie to the highest standards - demanding balanced strength when guarding a post-up, correcting each poorly defended drive, encouraging him daily to maintain extended focus - in the hopes that Turner becomes molded with these habits.

There is no rift between Turner and Collins. There is, perhaps, the standard clash of youth's shortsighted exuberance with maturity's endless patience.

Turner wants to play - now. Collins wants Turner to play the right way - always.

Turner is looking toward an undefined future, while Collins easily calls upon high-definition examples from his past: He coached Michael Jordan, Grant Hill, and Lindsey Hunter early in their careers.

Turner and Collins exchange daily text messages. There are none of the head games that occasionally accompany spotty minutes, no "entitled rookie vs. stubborn coach" soap opera playing out behind the 76ers' closed doors.

There is this: Collins' decision that he won't use Turner for 25 empty, frequently sloppily played minutes just because he's the No. 2 pick of the 2010 NBA draft.

Collins wants more. Turner must respond.

For those watching, the quality of Turner's minutes often boils down to made shots, but understanding the detailed demands of the Sixers' system becomes trickier. Turner's performance assessments often can be superficial: How many points did he score? In some games, his stat sheet has massive curb appeal, but if you peek inside the front door, you'll find there's a leaky faucet or a door off the hinge. You'd never see these nuisances unless you possessed a professionally trained eye or you watched tape of Turner's minutes.

Kind of how the Sixers coaches do.

So if you want to know precisely why Turner isn't playing, whether you agree with the reasoning or not, here it is.

Let's look at the first half of Friday night's win over Toronto:

Sixers' Turner fails to capitalize on opportunity

Evan Turner made his 14th start of the season Monday against Orlando, filling in for Andre Iguodala. Iguodala sat out in hopes that rest would help his right knee tendinitis.

Turner did not exactly take advantage of his opportunity. In 12 first-half minutes he had zero rebounds ? though in fairness the Sixers as a team had only nine to speak of. At the end of the game, he had played 25 minutes and recorded two boards.

If one is allowed to read body language, Turner?s said disengaged. He lacked a motor on a night when the Sixers were down two key ingredients ? Iguodala because of the knee and Lou Williams missed his fourth consecutive game because of his strained right hamstring.

In the past Turner has responded positively to being in the starting lineup, averaging 11 points, six rebounds and two assists in 13 games. Still, Collins gave the nod to Andres Nocioni to start the third quarter after Turner?s less than productive first half.

Turner never expected slow start

Turner never expected slow start By TOM MOORE Staff Writer Calkins Media, Inc.

PHILADELPHIA - Evan Turner's rookie season hasn't gone the way the second pick in last June's NBA Draft expected.

Turner, a combo guard who is accustomed to handling the ball, averaged 7.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 23 minutes in 78 games for the Sixers, who open the playoffs Saturday afternoon in Miami.

Turner was a DNP-CD (Did Not Play-Coach's Decision) in four games, including a March 30 win over the Rockets and April 2 loss to the Bucks, as coach Doug Collins sometimes opted for veteran Andres Nocioni and others instead of Turner.

Turner, the Naismith Player of the Year as a junior at Ohio State, wasn't one of the nine first-year players picked for the NBA rookie-sophomore game during an up-and-down 2010-11 campaign.

"I never really had to deal with sitting out or anything like that," Turner said. "Life's funny - you've got to know when to laugh.

"It's crazy. I would've never thought my NBA career would start off like this. But it's cool. I think I learned a lot from it. I think this will help for the better more than worse."

But Turner should have a chance to help in the playoffs, especially because he'll be needed to help defend against Miami star guard Dwyane Wade.

"It's definitely a great experience to have for my first year," Turner said.

Turner's topsy-turvy season starts anew
Apr. 14, 2011

PHILADELPHIA ? The regular season ended, and not a minute too soon for Sixers rookie Evan Turner.

Turner, the No. 2 pick in the draft last summer, was in and out of the team's rotation to the point where he was barely playing through much of March.

Then Lou Williams got hurt, and Andre Iguodala decided to rest his aching knee for the playoffs. All of a sudden, Turner was thrust into the Sixers' rotation. He admittedly didn't handle it well.

"It was new," Turner said. "To tell you the truth, I've never been through half the stuff I've been through this year."

That was evident Monday against Orlando, when Turner was put into the starting lineup to replace Iguodala. He didn't make a field goal in the first half. When the third quarter began, he was replaced by Andres Nocioni.

To Sixers coach Doug Collins, that was a lesson Turner had to learn.

"I think Evan had subconsciously taken himself out of the mix," Collins said. "He got a little out of shape, gained a little weight. All of a sudden, Lou (Williams) gets a (hamstring injury) and (Iguodala) goes down with a knee, and now you're cast into playing.

"It's the one mistake I've always felt young players make. They start looking, and they're saying, "Well, this season's over for me and wait till next year.' The one thing you can't ever do is wait. You're an ankle sprain away from playing."

Turner, who averaged 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds during the regular season, said he'll be ready for the Miami Heat in the playoffs.

I was watching this game when I could, but paying far more attention to the Penguins game.. my roommate told me Reggie Miller was being unnecessarily harsh on Turner given his solid performance tonight. What was he saying?

That 'the rookie' needs to learn to defend in the NBA...in so many words.

Turner did have 15, but it wasn't a spectacular performance (though a 30 point game is hardly spectacular when you lose by 20). And yes, Evan struggled mightily on defense.

I don't know. It was just an awful game for the 6ers. So I guess you could say Reggie was complaining about a fart when a pile of shit is lying right next to it.

Evan played 7 minutes tonight. I'm baffled by the amount of time he saw tonight considering his success in game 2. He went 1-3 on the floor for two points and had 1 steal. Give the guy some time to get comfortable or gain some sort of confidence. Ridiculous!

Yeah one thing I noticed about Collins is he doesn't seem to ride a hot hand and instead seems to rely on his starters getting it going. Even with the good first half even had in the game before he saw no time till the game was practically over in the 2nd half.
