G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Even for Turner, watching the game from home instead of playing in it will be different.

?It?s weird even being away from Ohio State,? Turner said on Friday night. ?Not kind of having Demetri around and having a little bit of distance is weird. We both went to the same high school and both played in the same conference. Now, we?re at two different levels of basketball. I haven?t seen him a while. It?s definitely weird.?

Turner saw it in the same way.

?I?m all about paying my dues,? Turner said. ?Sometimes it hasn?t meant to happen. Some of the shots I usually make aren?t going in. I keep working hard. That?s the best thing from coming up from the bottom. I?ve done it before.?

Turner has a shoot-around Saturday morning before playing Utah in the evening, but he?ll back home in time to watch the Illinois-Ohio State game. He hopes his good friend McCamey does well, but his prediction was an Ohio State victory.

?I?m a Buckeye, baby,? Turner said with a large laugh.

This type of nonsense really irks me. "Still, it's hard to ignore the Sixers' poor history with the second pick." How many second picks have they had? What to any of them have to do with Evan Turner?

To the author of this article, I have the following advice. Sierra. Tango. Foxtrot. Uniform.

yah this is a dumb article...its not like philly had a tough choice...if they wanted to go SG/SF then turner was a no brainer...are they really kicking themselves now for taking turner instead of wesley johnson? its not like johnson is having a awesome rookie campaign either...out of all the top 10 picks, demarcus cousin is the only one having an impact on his team, and his is both on and off the court...the guy is a mental patient...so philly just needs to chill out and realize that last years class didnt have alot of talent in it....so far the steal of the draft is landry fields in the second round

Sixers Notes: 76ers' Collins thinks Turner, Iguodala playing well together
76ers Notes

TORONTO - For much of the season, an underlying topic for the 76ers has been the possibility of Andre Iguodala and Evan Turner playing well together.

Iguodala, the team's anointed franchise player, and Turner, the lottery draft pick, seem to cover much of the same ground: good passing, good floor game, strong rebounding, weak outside jump-shooting.

During Iguodala's absence because of Achilles tendinitis, an injury that has cost him 12 games this season, Turner's numbers increased. The boost could be explained by the rookie's increased minutes, but some concern arose over the ability of the two guards to coexist.

Before Wednesday night's game against the Toronto Raptors, coach Doug Collins said he liked what he has seen from the pair.

"They've really, actually, been playing well together," Collins said. "Tell you what, we're good defensively when those two guys are out there together because we have size, we can switch a lot of things, both of them are good rebounders. One of the things I have to be concerned about is to make sure we have enough shooting on the floor with those guys."

Collins said that he usually tries to put combo guard Lou Williams, perhaps the team's best scorer, on the floor with Iguodala and Turner. Entering the game, Iguodala was averaging 14.1 points per game on 45 percent shooting from the floor, while Turner was averaging 7.3 points on 40.2 percent shooting.

"I don't even really pay attention to it," Turner said of playing with Iguodala. "Sometimes I sub in for him. I think once our team gets going and gets on a run, it doesn't really matter who's out there. It's not like it's an isolation for me one time, isolation for him the next."

MCCAFFERY: Williams-Turner backcourt a wise 76ers' choice
Published: Sunday, January 30, 2011
By JACK MCCAFFERY

PHILADELPHIA ? Evan Turner is 22 and was the No. 2 pick in an NBA draft. Jrue Holiday is 20 and was a No. 17 pick. Lou Williams, 24, was a second-round value selection directly out of high school.

Choices. The 76ers have them. They have them now, and they will have them later, and they definitely had them Sunday night in a 110-99 victory over the Denver Nuggets that was telling in many ways.

The Sixers are not championship caliber, not yet, maybe never. But if they ever are to be, the backcourt will come from that bounty of youth, and from that investment of draft choices, money and expectation.

From that nucleus, some sort of reasonable rotation will appear, and when it does, it will all make sense. For now, Doug Collins is willing to mix and match, to pick and choose, to take one from Column A and, if need be, dump another into a late-game Column DNP.

One game after surrendering 42 fourth-quarter points and losing, 99-94, to Memphis, the Sixers took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter Sunday and improved that by 10 percent. For that lead preservation, Collins trusted a Turner-Williams backcourt for the last six minutes ? six minutes of dive-on-the-floor, challenge-the-shooter, rebound-in-traffic basketball passion.

76ers' Evan Turner not upset about Rookie Challenge snub
By MARTIN FRANK ? The News Journal ? February 3, 2011

NEWARK, N.J. -- 76ers point guard Jrue Holiday said the best thing about getting chosen for the sophomore team for the Rookie-Sophomore Challenge during All-Star weekend was that it will be held in his hometown of Los Angeles.

Evan Turner, meanwhile, said he didn't feel slighted that he didn't make the team. Instead, he'll go home to Chicago over the All-Star weekend, which will be held Feb. 18-20, and get ready for the rest of the season.

"When I found out I didn't make it, I was like, 'Whatever,'" Turner said. "There's not much you can really do about it. ... That's life. Sometimes, the funniest things happen in life. I've been playing well as of late. I can't worry about things I can't control. It's not like I'm a bad basketball player. I'll be fine."

Turner, the No. 2 pick in the draft last June, wasn't selected in a vote by the league's assistant coaches, while the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 picks from the draft were selected.

Sixers coach Doug Collins said if Turner keeps improving, he should make the sophomore team next season.

"I think Evan, over the last month, has been great," Collins said. "We love where he's heading. Jrue didn't make the game last year. Now, here he is. We're hoping Evan is going to continue on that path."

Evan?s latest back injury not Turning heads on Sixers staff
Published: Thursday, February 10, 2011
By JACK McCAFFERY
[email protected]

PHILADELPHIA ?- Evan Turner missed six games of his senior season at Ohio State with a broken back. The Sixers, who would eventually draft him, didn?t worry.

Turner missed the final nine minutes of a 99-95 loss Wednesday night to the Orlando Magic, complaining of back spasms. The Sixers said they weren?t worried.

Turner didn?t practice Thursday. Not to worry, the Sixers said.

The Sixers will entertain the 44-8 San Antonio Spurs tonight at the Wells Fargo Center. That, they can worry about. But not, Doug Collins insists, because of Turner?s back.

The back bone may be connected to every other bone, but Turner?s various back injuries are not attached to one another at all.

?We wanted him to take the day off,? Collins said Thursday after a mini-workout at the PCOM Center. ?I think he has what Spencer (Hawes) had, and it almost happened the same way. Spencer was out warming up and the chiropractor said what happened was that a rib sort of popped out of place. And when it does, it throws your back into spasm. So it?s nothing structural, where you would have pain in your legs and all that kind of stuff. This is all a muscle thing.

?Today, we expected Evan to be very sore because they popped that thing back in. It was in spasm. When I talked to him this morning, he said he would be ready to go (Friday.) Spencer was like that too. It took him about two or three days before he was back to being himself.?

Sixers' Turner getting warmer, but trip to shot doc necessary
Published: Tuesday, February 15, 2011

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? There?s a strong chance that Evan Turner will pay a visit to the doctor at season?s end ? the Shot Doctor.

While the rookie?s outside shooting has shown some improvement in recent weeks, there are some fundamental changes Doug Collins would like to see Turner try to make. And that?s why Collins has made early overtures to legendary Philadelphia University coach Herb Magee about reconstructing Turner?s shooting form in the offseason.

?I talked to Coach Magee the other day at a high school basketball game,? said Collins, who bumped into Magee as he watched son-in-law Paul Romanczuk coach Archbishop Carroll to a win over Saint Joseph?s Prep Sunday. ?I would love for him to work with Evan this summer. He?s one of the best shooting coaches there is, right there in Philadelphia. Coach said he?d love to do that.?

Fortunately for Collins, Turner hasn?t let his selection at No. 2 in last summer?s draft create delusions about his game. In fact, Turner acknowledges that his shot requires work ? and that he has started applying some tips.

?I shoot after practice and work on it, but the one thing is that I?m trying to shoot all in one motion, limit the air,? said Turner, who before the Sixers' 102-91 loss to the Grizzlies Tuesday was shooting 41.1 percent from the field for the season, but 47.5 percent in six February games. ?One thing I?m definitely going to do is spend extra time in Philly and work with coach on off-the-ball stuff. I definitely have to find a shot doctor or something.

?(Teammate Andres) Nocioni sat me down and said my shot should be one motion and not broken up into two parts ? That?s all I remember, because once he starts talking fast I can?t understand him.?

Can 76ers' Turner come up big again?
February 20, 2011
By Mike Jensen, Inquirer Staff Writer

When the Hoop Scoop basketball rating service published its ranking of the nation's top 460 high school sophomores in January 2005, Evan Turner didn't rush to find where he was on the list.

He wasn't on the list.

Even though a handful of high school sophomores already were committed to colleges and the top-rated player, O.J. Mayo, was starting to field questions about when he would turn pro - and another guard at Turner's high school was No. 120 nationally - Turner was on his high school's junior varsity. The following November, he did crack Hoop Scoop's list. He was No. 305 in his class.

So there was no early heads-up about this guy from the far West Side of Chicago, no warning he would eventually be the national college player of the year and the overall No. 2 pick, by the 76ers, in the 2010 NBA draft. Turner always had skills, but always had to climb the ladder, not missing a step. Even at Ohio State, Turner showed up as the No. 3 recruit in his Buckeyes recruiting class and didn't start during most of a frustrating freshman year.

The Sixers knew Turner's background in great detail when they drafted him, how he never started where he wound up. But that's not the kind of thing you can put on a billboard or a commercial when you draft a guy No. 2. The 2010 draft had only one sure thing - John Wall, drafted No. 1 by the Wizards. Wall had been Turner's opposite, the man at every level.

Turner described his own path: "I really had to fit in before I stood out."

Inside the Sixers: Turner's journey from self-doubt to no-doubt
February 20, 2011|By Kate Fagan, Inquirer Staff Writer

Watching Evan Turner this season has been like scanning a skyline.

Either your eye lingers on the peaks, the tallest buildings, or it notices the flat stretches between. No, Turner hasn't been New York City, uninterrupted magnitude. But he hasn't been a Kansas horizon, either.

He's been somewhere in the middle: enough great moments to make you wonder if he can build more. And he believes, as do those around him, that he will.

Very early in the season, before a preseason game in Cincinnati, Turner answered questions for the local papers, the ones that had covered his college career at Ohio State. When the reporters left the locker room, they wondered aloud, "Is everything OK with Evan?"

He looked out of place. His chair was pulled away from his locker and into the room's open space, adrift, connected to nothing. And while one likely had nothing to do with the other, you couldn't help but notice how Turner's words and demeanor conveyed the same detachment.

He was a No. 2 draft pick, unsure of his place. Worrying about Evan Turner didn't seem like a ridiculous thing to be doing.

Things are different now.

Turner is almost always surrounded by some combination of Jrue Holiday, Lou Williams, and Jodie Meeks. It might just be the proximity of their lockers that naturally creates this group, but it's like this on the road, too, and it's easy to observe how similar they all are: in age, in game, in focus, in frequency of cell-phone usage.

Turner said he now appreciates those first two months of the season, during which he had little understanding of his on-court place. No one did; that was part of the process. But while his teammates had already established who they were in the locker room and off the court, Turner hadn't. The former was naturally tied to the latter, creating Turner's all-around uncertainty as the 76ers sputtered to a 3-13 record.

Today, he appears to have found both.

Lynam: Rocky road paying off for Sixers' Turner

Evan Turner credits Doug Collins' tough love for helping him grow this season. (AP)

Evan Turner has played twice as many games this year then he did all of last year at Ohio State and the Sixers still have 22 games to go in the regular season, not to mention their potential postseason schedule that waits.

If you ask Turner if he misses his college days he says he misses his friends, he doesn?t miss the college ball. He admits to missing the atmosphere at ?The Ohio State? where hundreds of thousands of people are walking around, chanting ?O-H-I-O? almost like Mardi Gras, a celebration on any given football weekend.

The 2010 No. 2 overall pick has not exactly had a celebratory rookie season, averaging seven points and four rebounds while playing 24 minutes per game, but it has been a tremendous learning experience that begins with hard lessons from his head coach.

?At first I don?t think he understood me and I didn?t understand him,? Turner explained. ?My agent told me it was because we were similar to each other and therefore bumped heads a little bit. As soon as I understood what he wanted from me, he?s been great. I know I can learn how to be a pro, learn to play the right basketball.?

Turner appreciates that he did not end up in a situation where good habits would not have been insisted upon, which over the long haul can curtail a career.

?I have matured tremendously from last year,? he said. ?When you are the go-to guy you sometimes get your way a little bit, spoiled if you will. So the hard love that Coach Collins showed me really hurt me. I mean he didn?t play me two games, I was a DNP or maybe he would put me in for 10 seconds and so I had to deal with hard times, but I think better times are in the future.?

Rookie Turner using grit to become a head-turner

PHILADELPHIA ? In the nonstop world of an 82-game basketball season, it?s tough for players and coaches to pinpoint ?turning points.? Between games there are bags to pack, planes to catch, loved ones to embrace and practice courts to hit.

For those standing an arm?s length away from the mayhem, it?s easier to take in the subtle moments.

For Evan Turner, Doug Collins and the Sixers, Sunday night?s 125-117 overtime win over the Golden State Warriors required as much effort as any of the other 31 victories for the season. But it was tough not to notice that the crowd at Wells Fargo Center had a decidedly higher level of appreciation for what the rookie from Ohio State was doing with his time on the court in this one ? and rightfully so.

Turner had 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot in 28 taut minutes. Those included the final 14 minutes of the game, and in his first 40 seconds on the floor in the fourth quarter, Turner brought the place to its feet when he blocked a shot, grabbed four rebounds and dove to the floor for a loose ball. He again received roars of approval when he threw down a dunk with 2:23 remaining in the fourth that kept the Sixers in pursuit.

?I was just out there trying to contribute,? Turner said. ?I heard them cheering, but I wasn?t sure what it was for.?

They were gritty, energy plays from Turner, who last week heard some boos when he threw a couple of errant passes in transition late in a loss to the Mavericks. After that game he approached Collins and acknowledged his mistakes and vowed to atone.

This was a perfect penance.

?I think he?s played pretty damn well most of the time,? Collins said of Turner. ?He has Jrue (Holiday) in front of him (in the starting lineup), but I think he is growing by leaps and bounds.?

Turner's hustle key for Sixers
Oft-booed rookie plays big role in OT win
Mar. 6, 2011 |

PHILADELPHIA -- The moment of appreciation for Evan Turner came early in the fourth quarter.

The 76ers' rookie hit a jumper to tie the game. Then he blocked a shot at the other end, hustled downcourt and fought for three offensive rebounds before getting fouled.

The fans, who had booed him at times during the season and questioned whether the No. 2 overall pick would be a bust, gave him a standing ovation.

Then Turner continued to earn their approval. He finished with 20 points and seven rebounds in helping the Sixers to a 125-117 overtime win over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.

"The second half of the season, I've got to start making that turn," Turner said. "The first 40-something games was kind of like a warmup. Lately, I've been attacking and not worrying about the outcomes -- just attacking and being assertive."

And yes, Turner did notice the standing ovation.

"It was definitely cool," he said. "I've heard them boo a couple times the other night, so that's definitely a big turnaround."
