Penguins will play Buckeyes next year
Youngstown State University and The Ohio State University have entered into a two-year agreement to play in the 2007 and 2008 football seasons at Ohio Stadium, both athletic departments announced on Friday. The Penguins open both seasons at ‘‘The Horseshoe” on Sept. 1, 2007 and Aug. 30, 2008.
Youngstown State Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo said playing the top-ranked Buckeyes gives the athletics department, the entire university and community great national exposure.
‘‘The opportunity to play a tradition-rich program like Ohio State in consecutive years benefits our student-athletes, our university, our fan-base and the entire Mahoning Valley,” Strollo said. ‘‘I know everyone in our football family appreciates this chance to play one of the most storied college football programs in the nation.”
The matchup also offers the intrigue of pitting former YSU coach and current Buckeye coach Jim Tressel against his old team. Tressel amassed a 15-year record of 135-57-2 at Youngstown State from 1986-2000.
Youngstown State has played a Division I-A foe 39 times since moving to the Division I-AA ranks in 1981. YSU is 19-19-1 all-time against I-A schools and played its first-ever game against a member of the Big East Conference, Pittsburgh, this past season.
The Penguins are coming off an 8-3 campaign in which it was 5-2 in the Gateway Football Conference tying playoff semifinalist Northern Iowa and playoff quarterfinalist Southern Illinois for the league title. The only other loss in 2005 was at Pitt.
Ohio State, who was voted preseason No. 1 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, is coming off a 10-2 season and a 34-20 Fiesta Bowl victory.

"We still have a few details to work out, including where the first game will be, but we have an agreement in principle," school spokesman Steve Snapp said of the Sooner series.
"Our hope down the road is to continue to add high-profile games and to be able to play at sites where we have not traditionally played."
Ohio State and Oklahoma have met just twice previously, the Sooners winning in Columbus in 1977 and the Buckeyes prevailing in Norman in '83.
OSU also announced that its non-conference schedules were complete through 2009. The Buckeyes will play Division I-AA Youngstown State, Akron and Kent State in '07, Youngstown State, Ohio U. and Troy in '08 and Army, Toledo (in Cleveland) and New Mexico State in '09.
They also will play a road game at Army in 2010. "Marquee match-ups — plus home games — seem to be the formula we're going to shoot for," coach Jim Tressel said at the Big Ten meetings this week.
"I think our guys will remember the Texas series when they're old and gray. They'll remember the great night in Ohio Stadium (last year), and they'll remember the chance to go to Austin. And the guys, I hope, will remember the USC series and the Miami of Florida series."
Recognizing the burdens posed by playing those national powers, Tressel added with a laugh, "And maybe they'll come to the mental institute and talk about the great memories with me."

The Bearcats initially were scheduled to play at Marshall on Sept. 26, 2009 as part of a two-game, home-and-away series. Instead the Big East member will fulfill its date in Huntington on Oct. 4, 2008. Marshall plays at Cincinnati on Sept. 22, 2007.
The switch opens a 2009 slot for Ohio, which is expected to sign an extended home-and-away series with the Herd. Marshall is scheduled to host Tennessee in 2009, but it's long been rumored that the Volunteers won't be visiting Edwards Stadium.
"We have a few other matters we need to clean up in our scheduling to make sure everything fits in place," Marshall athletic director Bob Marcum said. "And those things will be forthcoming."
Marcum nearly has finalized paperwork on Marshall's 2010 trip to Ohio State.

"I signed the contract this morning," Marshall Athletic Director Bob "Kayo" Marcum said Monday.
Besides it being a homecoming for Snyder, who coached at Ohio State during the 2001-04 seasons, the Buckeyes will provide a lucrative payday.
Although the guarantee isn't the $1 million that has been rumored, it is believed to be in the neighborhood.
"It's a little less than that," said Marcum, who declined to reveal the amount.
The no-return game for Marshall comes on the heels of the Herd getting a commitment from South Point blue-chipper Chris Smith, considered the top quarterback prospect in Ohio. Snyder's strong connections were obvious there.
There's more, too. Snyder's ties to the Buckeye State are helping to schedule other games.
The Herd also will begin a home-and-home series with Ohio University in 2010. "I think that is a great game for our fans," said Marcum. "It's an easy drive."
An already scheduled home date with Cincinnati set for Sept. 26, 2009 will be moved up to 2008, at the request of the Bearcats. MU plays at Cincinnati in 2007.
Marshall's game at Ohio State may not be an isolated appearance. Marshall officials indicated Ohio State has placed Marshall in with a group of Ohio schools that the Buckeyes play on a rotating basis.
For example, Ohio State hosts Youngstown State, Akron and Kent State in 2007.
Then in ‘08, Youngstown State and Ohio University travel to Columbus. The Buckeyes play Toledo in Cleveland (Browns Stadium) in 2009.
Then, Ohio State will open the 2010 season with Marshall.

I love the idea of playing YSU. I was going to school there when Coach Tressel was winning his AA National Championships. I just hope that playing a Division AA school doesn't come back to bite us in the ass the way it did Auburn a couple of years ago!! Doesn't seem very bright when you look at it that way!

Yeah but they were only 1 of 2 undefeated teams. If they had a loss then Penn St. probably would've gotten the nod.

I've been told by a very reliable source that we just signed a contract with YSU to play them in 2010...that'll be three games with YSU in four years (2007, 2008, 2010).
