Fred Davis (official thread)

Fred whined about any thought of playing TE in college saying he'll never do it. He said Carroll promised him he'd always play WR, blah, blah, blah..Fred never gave an ounce of indication he was ever a team guy when he was being recruited so this isn't surprising at all. I don't want him at OSU. When he looked Dru Humphries' mom in the eyes and said he'll go to OSU and wear Dru's number and then turned the other cheek, he lost all respect in my book. The fact that he's always come across as cocky and selfish only adds to it.

Put me in the camp that doesn't want Fred to transfer to OSU. FD is making some terrible decisions. Even if he is unhappy at USC, he should have showed up on time for the TEAM and then transfer after the season.

There are already enough headaches at OSU, we don't need another. Does FD deserve another chance, no doubt. I just hope it isn't at OSU.

27,

Dru played at the same highschool as Fred. He verbaled to OSU in the same class that MoC, Zwick, etc. came in. He died while in highschool (heart problem, that wasn't diagnosed)... some folks had him rated higher than MoC, he was that good.

Coach Tressel game Dru's mom a NC ring when we won the big dance in '02...

Fred said he would honor dru by playing for OSU wearing his old highschool number... he then left town in the middle of the night to go to USC...

Folks are upset at Fred on many levels... should he transfer out of USC and closer to home? I he wants... I just hope it isn't to OSU...

Being late from weekend trips back to his home (more than once it appears) and sub-par academic work, while at a school that is 2000 miles away from home, and playing for a guy that may have been less than up front with him, all adds up to make for a painful freshman year. The chronically late from weekend trips and sub-par school work are classic symptoms of being homesick; now couple that with not being happy with the status on the team and possibly being misled, well, I can see where a 19 year-old would be somewhat out of sorts by it all.

I am amazed at how mature many here were at the age of 18 or 19. Most 18 and 19 year old males I encounter are somewhat cocky and selfish, and these aren't the athletes I am talking about. Some of the greatest growth in maturity happens in the first couple of years of college. I remember how I was at 18/19 and how much I had matured by the time I was 21 (relatively speaking as my wife claims I am still maturing). I am thankful that I was allowed to experience this growth and I wasn't branded/labeled for life as some here have done to FD.

If he wants to transfer to OSU and if JT accepts him on the team, then I support the decision of JT and will give FD the same fair chance that I would afford anyone else.

Personally, I hope that FD stays at USC and not for a vindictive "You made your bed.." type reason. I want him to stay there and be successful and learn from the problems he has encountered during his first year 2000 miles away from home, as it will make him a much better person in the long run.

I will say this, if FD does come to OSU (which I would seriously doubt) all I'll want out of him is that he score some damn touchdowns.

I don't really care about all this FD is a bad person chatter. Like Prof said, the guy isn't even 20. He's not going to have the polished personality of a 35 year old Michael Jordan.

Hadn't heard that before about the honorary ring...
When and if times arise that negative things are the only ones said about JT I will remember this.
What a purely high class gesture.

buckiprof: "playing for a guy that may have been less than up front with him"

This statement is shoddy at best. Its a big "He said, she said" mess. Carroll can't be blamed for switching the kid to a more natural position once he gets him in practice. And to be honest, the first time I ever saw a picture of Davis, I thought he was too big and jacked up to play WR myself. I'm not surprised that the move was made.

Carroll's a former Pro Coach: if he thinks Davis is best suited at TE, then Fred should stop bitching about "promises" made to him, suck it up, and work to be the best TE he can be. I think he could make an outstanding Winslow-like player at that position.

"Personally, I hope that FD stays at USC and not for a vindictive "You made your bed.." type reason."

I agree. He also made disparaging comments about OSU after LOI day this year. I don't want or see a need for Davis on this team. There's a thin line between being a talent and a kid with an attitude problem, and Davis has shown me (so far) that he's the latter. I don't see he adds to the program right now or in the future.

Sloopy - That is exactly why I used the phrase "may have been less than up front with him". I agree that it is a he said/she said situation; I wasn't there when PC talked with FD.

Not to drag all of this shit up again, but what were the disparaging remarks he made about OSU?

I agree. However, many athletes who receive a D1 schollie have some degree of an "attitude problem". Part of the maturation process is how quickly one's attitude can be adjusted.

Nice post Buckiprof (but, I don't think you can give yourself great post awards  ). I will support whatever decision Tressel makes and sitting out a year may give Davis time to really put things in order. I would rather him stay at USC. It will give him a chance to really sort things out, deal with his problems there and he will probably grow more by fulfilling his commitment to USC.
