Fred Davis (official thread)

Davis suspended after late return

http://www.dailynews.com/Stories/0,1413,200~29583~2623314,00.html

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- USC tight end Fred Davis was suspended from the team and did not accompany the Trojans to Miami on Tuesday. He will not play in the Orange Bowl and will meet Jan. 10 with coach Pete Carroll to discuss his future with the program, according to sources.
Davis missed Monday's practice after he was unable to get a flight from his home in Toledo, Ohio. He has returned late from weekend trips to Ohio several times this season, but this is the first time Carroll has suspended him from a game because of tardiness. He was suspended from the Arizona game for poor academic performance.

Davis arrived at Heritage Hall on Tuesday morning to depart for the airport but was told Carroll would not let him travel to the Orange Bowl.

"He didn't get back in time," Carroll said. -- Scott Wolf

Not to reopen one of the biggest cans of worms in recent recruiting memory, but...

I read a lot on the Insiders message board about this topic. Someone "close" to the Davis family, who worked out with Fred over the holidays, claims that there is some genuine interest on Fred's part in coming back to Ohio and playing for the Buckeyes. Apparently Fred realizes that he was sold a load of crap by PC with all the "#1 guy" stuff. I wonder what kind of interest the staff would have, if any, in taking a guy like FD if he were looking to transfer...

I hope he does not come to OSU, especially with the comment about "poor academic performance." He made his decision and if he wants to look elsewhere that is fine. I just would rather him not look at OSU. We have had our share of problems lately and don't need a kid who pouts and hurts the team when he is not getting his way. Not showing up in time for the biggest game of the season is not the best way to endear yourself to any coach or team.

I find it difficult to make an assumption about someone that we don't know. The poor academic performance could be because he hates where he is. It happened to me, as a freshman I went to a college that I did not like, and had a 1.5 gpa. I didn't try, didn't go to class, all because I hated where I was. I transferred to a smaller college closer to home the next year and graduated with a 3.2 from there because I was happy.

He is still a kid (probably about 19), and I would be happy to have him. He made a bad decision, and I don't think he should be penalized because of it. In comparison, the "replacement" we got for him had sex with a 12-year old girl apparently, and no one is calling for him to be kicked off the team. So, if it were your son, which would you rather be dealing with, a bad decision on where he went to college which is easily rectified, or statutory rape charges because he had sex with a 12-year old?

Put it all in perspective, you are giving the rapist the benefit of the doubt, why not the good kid who has broken no laws, just disappointed you in the original college choice he made.

A couple of big differences here. As you alluded to, Dukes has been charged, but has not been found guilty. If he is found guilty he should be gone. Davis is already guilty. His coach has said he has once again not complied with the team rules of showing up on time. He is showing a pattern of immaturity and selfishness. Returning late from a long weekend at the beginning of the season, not carrying his weight in the classroom, and now being late for the team's biggest game is a pattern of a kid who does not belong at OSU and may not even be welcome at USC anymore.

It also shows the pattern of a freshman who is homesick. Take it for what its worth.

Initial reaction - you made your bed now lay in it.

Upon further review - He made a poor choice that at the time he thought was the right choice. IF he wants to come to OSU and coach Tressel accepts him, fine with me. Should we penalize a kid forever because he made one bad choice? Probably not.

But I'd have a very long talk with him about WHY he choose USC over OSU. I'd also have him help recruit because when recruits are wavering on whether to go out of state or play for OSU - he can say... "bro, I've been there done that. Let me tell you it ain't all greener on the other side...."

Fred Davis has not only been a "flop" in following team rules and academic guidelines, but he was so inferior to Jarrett when he got to USC,they made him a TE.When he was being recruited he commented that he didn't enjoy blocking;so they convert a guy that doesn't want to block into a TE.I just think he was over-rated and got exposed at USC.Keep him in La-La land. The last thing OSU needs now is a cast off from another team with a history.
