Former WVU Head Coach Bill Stewart (RIP)

Congrats to Coach Stu, I think it would be funny (and telling) if some of the assistants rr wanted for scUM decided to stay with WVU and Stewart. It would also be funny if scUM and WVU met in a bowl, from last nights performance and from shots of the sideline, my money would be on WVU as Stewart did not look tight like rr got in both of the Eer losses.

He orchestrated the biggest upset by far this bowl season.

I gave WVU NO chance to win against Oklahoma. On paper WV was outclassed both personnel wise and motivationally with the loss of their coach. Man what a turnaround.

Curious if you have some numbers about that. Likely true, I'd just like to see the hard numbers, since UM is notorious for not paying that much.

The budget for Miles' assistant coaches was a major speedbump to bringing him to AA.

This was floating around the WVU board - you know you've arrived when you get a fire the coach petition.

Petition to Fire Bill Stewart

Mountaineer fans,

Bill Stewart's past will ruin our great football tradition at WVU. He made a racial comment that will be detrimental to the future players, the athletic department and the university. Bill Stewart is a racist and does not belong at WVU.

I strongly urge you to sign this petition immediately before it's too late.

The petition references allegedly racist remarks Stewart made about a running back's actions on the field when celebrating during his tenure as head coach at VMI.

Considering WVU was dominating the Fiesta Bowl and not losing, I question the comparison.

Anyway, the point of me posting is this....

West Virginia Hired Bobby Williams - FanHouse - AOL Sports Blog

Brings up a good point. Best of luck to WVU and Stewart, but it doesn't look like WVU really did their due diligence in the coaching search. I really thought Butch Jones was going to get the job.

The biggest upset honor, IMO, is Michigan beating Florida... scUM was left for dead by almost everyone including many of their fans. But I do agree WVU was one of the bigger upsets of the bowl season.

Stewart might be a great coach, and I wish him well, but I give him little credit for the OU win. Stoops resume the past few years include a bowl losses to Boise, a 36 point loss in the Orange Bowl and a complete implosion in his leagues championship game when he was coaching a tean anointed as the greatest of all time.

What beat OU was speed that they simply were not prepared for. WVU was certainly motivated, but they have been motivated since the day RR told them he had more important places to be.

The "class" and ability to recruit questions are interesting. I have always felt that Devine was a red flag. Bringing in a kid nobody else would touch showed what RR was willing to do. Is Stewart willing to do the same? That is not how you define class. For that matter, is he willing to do what is needed to keep Devine eligible?

With some of the names who indicated interest in this job being bypassed, I would submit that what the Stewart hiring might reflect is that some of the administrators at WVU who have been ticked about all the spending the past few years are being heard.

WVU is a pig's ear. RR took it very close to looking like a silk purse with a trendy O and a couple of God-send recruits, but what was the cost? And what would it take to sustain it?

The Pitt game was the game that would open the door to that next level. And incredible investment had been made. It was a home game - and the crowd didn't even show up when the team needed them. Morgantown is Morgantown. With the risks and compromises schools are willing to take for their shot at the Pot-O-Gold that is CFB today how do you compete in Morgantown? RR knew that. It is why he is now in AA.

Willing to make compromises.

I thought when what's his name signed his new contract last year than all of the assistants got a major increase in their contracts.

Slur incident at VMI sets WVU's Stewart on defensive
ESPN.com news services
Updated: January 4, 2008, 12:21 AM ET

West Virginia administrators on Thursday defended their new football coach, expressing complete satisfaction with Bill Stewart's explanation for his use of a racial slur at Virginia Military Institute 11 years ago.

At practice in 1996, Stewart used a racial slur aimed at a black player, who was, according to the then-VMI head coach, "hot dogging and show boating."

Stewart called him over for a private conversation, one-on-one in a low voice. Stewart said he told the player: "Don't let your actions give people reason to call you a n-----."

Found this posted on a WVU site from a former player of his at VMI......
Guy supports Stewart and actually gives his own name in the post...

I played for Coach Stewart at VMI...and HERE"S WHAT I THINK! [Message Boards - WVU Football] - We Must Ignite This Couch

I must premise this by saying I'm a passive VT fan as I am from VA and this will be my first and last post on this site. My name is Geoff Goff and I was a kicker at VMI from 1991-1995.

Coach Stewart is an excellent hire! He came to VMI over XMAS break during my Jr. year. The first meeting we had with him was right after we came back from Xmas break. 4 guys were a few minutes late to the meeting and he told them to clean out their lockers and hit the road. He immediately gained our respect and over the next year and a half, I never saw him take any attitude from anyone. He didn't care if you were an all american or a scrub, he treated everyone the same. Continued.....

Maybe Stewart will turn out to be the next Bill Belichick, but I?d guess he has a much better chance of becoming the next Bill Doba. Promoting an interim coach based on short-term success (Bobby Williams at Michigan State), or promoting an assistant just because he?s popular with the current players (Larry Coker at Miami), doesn?t usually work out in the long run. With Pat White and Noel Devine, it would be hard for any coach to screw up next year?s team, but two to three years down the road, the school will likely rue its hasty decision.

Yeah, I am sure that WVU would be really disappointed with an NC in 2 years. How would they ever be able to recover from that?

Good move by Stew...

Dispatch

Holliday returns to West Virginia

Doc Holliday will return to West Virginia to become coach of tight ends and fullbacks and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater.
Holliday was associate head coach for safeties under Urban Meyer at Florida the past three seasons.
"He'll be a tremendous asset to the West Virginia football program," coach Bill Stewart said yesterday. "His accolades as a recruiter are simply outstanding."
