Former DC Kerry Coombs (Former Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

Just catching up to all of this from yesterday. Count me as one who isn't buying the strong words from Day at face value. They said all the same shit after the Bama game then proceeded to do fuck all through the winter, spring and summer. Here we are in season now and you just don't teach a new defense in-season. Best case is that Day really means what he says and they have at least installed some other coverages over the spring/summer. Then it's just a matter of getting them called and having the right people on the field.

Hope I'm wrong but order does not often spring from chaos just because the boss finally gets pissed. It takes a while and the boss is ultimately responsible for not knowing it was total chaos previous to whatever cataclysmic event occurred to enlighten him to the fact. What the fuck has Coombs been doing and why didn't Ryan Day know about it are the two relevant questions here imo.

He wasn't like this after Alabama though and even admitted that had we had our players on the defensive line perhaps we play better. IMO this is way different from Ryan Day.

Maybe. Hopefully. Then again, what can he really do at this point?

You can't get a new DC mid season. The one you have couldn't get a defense prepared to play with a full off season, now he's going to unfuck everything in a couple of weeks of game planning practices?

This is a mess and I think some of Day's frustration stems from the embarrassment of knowing it happened under his watch. We've all been there.

1000% agree. Probably would never admit it but also I'd imagine is a bit disappointed that he didn't bring in a Co Coordinator as well. So not only did he allow no changes to occur all off season but made no additions to guard against if the issue last year was actually Kerry.

After the Bama game and leading up to the season, there was nothing but excuses.

There were no excuses from Day yesterday.

I agree, of course you can't teach a new defense mid-season. But there are literally dozens of things they can do differently within the current defense to make it better. The plan on defense isn't a bad one, the guy who is running it just doesn't know the details of it. That's on Day for hiring him and forcing the defense, but Kerry just ain't it.

A great philosopher once said: "You're not that guy, pal."

This reminds me of the comments from Zach Smith regarding Ed Warinner calling plays on game day.

How they’d spend all week preparing a specific game plan and then on game day, Warinner just shit the bed and reverted back to all the basic plays with none of the wrinkles that had been prepared.

I get the sense that Coombs as DC might be falling into a similar cycle. Where no matter what is prepared ahead of time, he is just not able to break out of calling the base stuff on game day.

My $.02 as someone who caught bits and pieces of the game from the Lake with my kids.

I'll say the quiet part out loud. Coach C is 60 years old. Sometimes its hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

There are two problems imho

Yes, the scheme is a problem; this has been made very clear by very many posts, I won't add to it.

But the other side of coaching is teaching and training. You have a scheme, you teach it. You have techniques to fit that scheme, you train them. You should have a system to teach and train. Some guys' systems for teaching work very well. Other guys' systems don't (or they have no formal system to speak of).

Based on Saturday, it looks like the system for teaching and training has produced a bunch of big, strong, fast, agile athletes that couldn't stop a competent offense run by high-school kids.

That is something that Day should have known.

Day's system for teaching and training the offense has produced record-setting results. As the head coach, he should have kept track of the system for teaching and training the defense. He should have known that it was not working.

Some might suggest that an offensive coach hires a DC to do that... OK

Then how do you promote a guy who has been around for decades and has never been a coordinator? If you have to have that level of trust, how do you promote a guy that no one else ever did?

I think Coach Coombs is a great Buckeye and I will remember him fondly. It is not his fault that he is not DC material; I don't doubt that he gave it everything he had. All of his previous bosses seem to have known that he wasn't DC material though.

That Ohio State needs a new DC is something that I suspected last year and strongly suspected in January. It is now something that should be completely non-controversial. Day does not get a pass for this though.

Day is young though. This is his first major issue with a coordinator. Go back and look at Saban's record before he got to Bama. Saban didn't become Saban until he'd been through a lot of this. Day will learn, I suspect. Coombs however has been given more than enough time to learn.
