Former DC Kerry Coombs (Former Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

Cincinnati threw for a little over 350 yards with a 65% completion percentage.

The very next week against Memphis, they threw for a little over 255 with a 40% completion percentage and 14 points.

That 2014 defense had a lot of issues. They just had coaches that wouldn’t allow them to get beat by the same thing over and over.

Even Darron Lee doesn’t think that 2014 defense was that good. They were good compared to what they were in 2013, but they finished 46th in total defense in 2014. ‘15 & ‘16 defenses were miles ahead of that 2014 defense.

No one’s saying 2014 didn’t have issues. I’m saying they weren’t the absolute shit show 2021 has been so far.

2014 had a few issues vs the run here and there but there was never this glaring issue such as 2018, 2020 and now 2021.
During the "good" stretch for this team:

Langford went for 137 and almost 8 ypc. It just didn't matter because Barrett had one of the greatest QB performances in OSU history (before that date).
Cobb had 145 and 3 tds.
Coleman went for 228 8 ypc & 8 ypc.
Drake Johnson went for under 80 yds 5 ypc and 2 tds.
they stopped Gordon
they didn't stop Henry, Joey did.
- 13 car 95 yds 7.3 ypc 1 td
they stopped Oregon, but they weren't built for the big stage upfront. They just lucked out in playing Jameis first. Derrick Henry may have run for 400 yds if the seeding was different.

They gave up over 200 yards rushing to Minny and Ibrahim only played 3 quarters. They just gave up over 260 to some other dude no one has ever heard of. Neither team had anything approaching a down field passing attack that should have kept us from focusing on the run.

It won't take another Joe Moorhead. Just a team with a balanced offense and the ability to watch film.
You don't even need film. Just Google "how to beat single high" since that's what we're gonna play no matter what.

If you’re talking about switching coaching responsibilities and/or making major changes to schemes in-season, then the monkey’s already in the banana patch. Maybe it slows down the bleeding some, but you’re still going to have issues. The offense is going to have to be perfect against any good offense they play.

I don’t blame Day for giving Coombs another year. 2020 was a mulligan for just about everybody. But, I’m glad to see he looks like he’s going to make some changes. It is very clear whatever the hell it is they’re doing is broken. It sucks, because like I said elsewhere, I love me some Kerry Coombs; but the man is not working as a DC.

Fortunately there's maybe 1 defense that can maybe get some stops against our offense in PED. The offense is going to have to score 40+ every big ten match to make sure.

my concern is that they vowed to make changes in the pressers immediately following the ‘20 Natty vs. Bama. They then had an entire offseason to re-evaluate and strategize. The result? Absolutely no change. In fact, it seems things only worsened amidst the loss of so many experienced players. I so desperately want to have faith that it will be different, as it feels that the urgency has attained new heights. This, after I did not think they could get any more significant. I suppose now their backs are against the wall, but like…how could they have let it get this bad after all of that? Ugh it just feels like sheer stubbornness but perhaps this has revealed the sad reality that there is some incompetence sprinkled in as well. Sigh

Not sure what exactly was said after Bama, but this is different. Day sounds like he's about to throw Coombs into Mt. Doom.

Even if the defense makes some improvements, I'll be surprised if Coombs is here next year. Unless he'd accept a symbolic CO-DC title and really just coach CBs.
