The talent is undeniable. If you have 17 four star DBs in your secondary you ought to be able to field a competent secondary - experience be damned.

It’s unusual in a game decided by just 7 points to hear the announcers continue to harp on one deficiency the entire game for a team and yet that’s what they did.
I must have heard them call out the vanilla, predictable Coombs defense at least 10 times. They just kept harping on it.

Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs: It has to be said, Ohio State's defense is playing with injuries. But every time Oregon presented the Buckeyes a unique situation, Coombs' defense was woefully unprepared to stop it. Oregon running back CJ Verdell rushed for 161 yards and posted 34 yards receiving with three touchdowns in a monster effort that Coombs could do nothing about. Quarterback Anthony Brown diced up Ohio State's coverage for 236 yards and two touchdowns, especially when they went into man coverage near the goal line. Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead is a great play caller, but the Buckeyes defense is officially a problem.

But the secondary wasn't the major problem, the fact that the DL can't get to the QB or stop the run game is an even bigger problem. Because they're making the DBs jobs that much harder

Its absolutely insane when you look at the talent(on paper) in our front 7. All former 4 stars and a 5star, and can't stop a thing. Just unacceptable

This is a fair point, but there have also been a ton of rushing yards given up that aren't necessarily on the LBs or DL. The long run TD on Saturday comes down to awful scheming. Obviously there could have been more penetration but if a stalemate results in a 77 yard run because the scheme is atrocious, that's on the DC.
And the outside runs were working primarily because of the incompetence of the secondary.
There are obvious shortcomings with the players themselves but a lot of this can be overcome by not rotating like 50 guys on and off the field constantly and by not calling defensive plays that leave your guys absolutely screwed before the ball is even snapped.

Our church has no bells.
Hopefully, Day started looking for a young defensive coordinator the day Coombs was hired and we have some names in the rolodex now that we didn't have when Hafley jumped ship. The Coombs hire always seemed rushed and less than ideal, but I understood why it happened. If he's not replaced, I won't understand that.

The only thing that's going to happen moving forward is we are going to out talent teams, when we play a team that has elite coaching and enough talent, we are going to struggle and if we were to get into the playoff, we are going to get embarrassed. I would be asking Al Washington and Rhodes what their adjustments would be and phase out Coombs as DC (Something they should have done last year with Mattison who was successful as a DC)
Also for those concerned with recruiting, what's the point of recruiting 5*s if you can't put them in position to be successful on the field....

Is execution the reason Buckeye defenders were running around confused pre-snap? Is execution the reason a DB was playing press coverage on an ineligible receiver over and over when Oregon would run a three wide formation with the middle guy covered up?
I mean, this is elementary stuff and Coombs is lost! Oregon offensive coaches had to be laughing their ass off pre-snap.

I mean yes... It's certainly not scheme. Execution is also why on their 3rd down and 3 where we called a timeout and fucked ourselves the safety in the other side of the field was yelling at the CB for following the receiver when I figure they were playing zone. They need to learn to line up right.
What execution doesn't really fix is the them running the same man abusing run on 3rd and short and us not adjusting

As annually as advertised I had my yearly meltdown fueled by way too much to drink. I should be able to handle myself better like an adult but here I am apologizing once again. Should have stuck to the plan which was to avoid posting during the game but that lasted all but 1 quarter or so.
Many here will eye roll this since there's a high probability it happens again and I don't blame you. I again apologize for ruining yet another game day thread and probably making it not an enjoyable day of posting.
I do believe in my overall thought but just not how vitriolic the comments were and the language that was used. I could've simply left it at that I don't think this is the right scheme and I don't think this is the correct coordinator. We will see I suppose.

No...It's not execution. It's absolutely preparation and scheme.
I mean, Ohio State is 112th in the country in 13th in the BigTen in total defense right now.

I think it's scheme as well... right now teams know the single safety cannot rotate fast enough to both sides of the field. So if they can get the safety going in one direction then backside it's wide open. For example on a 2 high look the safety could've addressed those two 14 yard TD runs.
What sort of confuses me is if we start in two high we can always shift to a 1 high responsibility post snap. Starting in a one high though with the safety/cover safety in the box though leaves us with less options.
