I think some are reading too much into it. It was a presser and all Coombs was saying is that he’s taking it in stride, staying positive and staying focused on his job.
Nothing tedious about it. What is tedious is to try and parse his words and spin them into some kind of controversy, which Coombs clarified it is not. Simple as that.

at the end of the day he still does not see what his actual shortcomings were as a DC. stubbornness and a massive failure to organize and adapt. he will forever be the guy who schemed Tuff Boreland to cover Devantae Smith in the national title game. good for him for taking the demotion in stride and not being a distraction. I'll give him that much. but you're not paying someone 1.4 million to coach a position and recruit. He's gone after this year. of that I have little doubt.

Washington Huskies fire offensive coordinator John Donovan on heels of Oregon loss

After reading some headlines (above) you really have to appreciate how Day and Coombs handled the "defensive coordinator/play calling" situation at Ohio State. It seems to have worked as Ohio State's defensive has been significantly improving since the changes, etc. Maybe the other school's coaches weren't willing to do what Coombs did, i.e. objectively recognize that there were some problems, swallow your pride and do what's best for the team, and take a reduction in your DC/play calling duties, etc.

Agreed. I’ve been really fascinated about how the whole thing went down. It’s really interesting how you can come out of a sticky situation actually looking better in some ways solely based on how you handle it. That’s very powerful to me. The simple truth is, the coaching world already knows your resume (in this case the inability of Coombs to scheme a solid D) so that’s no secret. What the world does not know however is the way you handle adversity and Coombs knocked it out of the park. Credit too goes to Day for how he handled it.

It hasn’t been the easiest of seasons for Kerry Coombs. He started off the year as the sole defensive coordinator for the Ohio State football team. He’s now been relegated to the booth upstairs and isn’t calling plays on that side of the ball anymore.

Even so, Coombs has an incredibly high value on the staff, specifically as a recruiter. That is underscored by Ohio State’s most recent commit Sonny Styles. Styles is a top-10 recruit in the country for the class of 2023 as a 5-star safety. Coombs is who locked him down.

Is this true? In the commitment interview with Birm, which was before he called the coaches to commit, he asked Sonny how was he going to let the staff know and Sonny said he was just going to call Coach Washington and Coach Day to commit.

I wonder what he’s going to do. Stick around and be an ace secondary coach, head back to the NFL as a corners coach, or go try out DC at a place with an easier leaning curve?

There’s nothing wrong with going the Larry Johnson route and becoming a true master of your craft.

I hope he stays in college. His awesome energy is wasted in the NFL.

This would be ideal and I’d be ecstatic. It would take a lot of humility and selflessness but go focus on developing the best secondary techniques while someone else designs and calls the defense.

Someone is going to be odd man out though. Barnes seemed to have some positive impact on the defense too (at least for a moment).

I would love to have him stay as a CB coach. He's an excellent recruiter and the energy he brings is amazing. As mentioned, be a master of the trade like LJ Sr at the position and earn a great living. But if he decides to go another route, I can't fault him. Just hoping he stays a Buckeye.
