Former DC Kerry Coombs (Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

Remember when guys were skeptical of Coach Coombs and were hoping he was assigned to special teams only?

If you don't remember...start at page 12.

Good times.

To play devil's advocate, it is fairly easy to see why people were skeptical of Coombs considering he and Withers jointly presided over what is most likely the worst Buckeye secondary of all time.

At the time, it was hard to say who exactly (Withers, Coombs, or both) was responsible - not only was the scheme terrible, our DBs played with some really sloppy technique. I think Bradley Roby even commented on the disparity in coaching once he got to the NFL.

It's only now, a few years down the line, that we can really look back and say Withers was the problem. That being said, I do wonder how much of our success this year at DB is attributable to Schiano. Dude's practically a defensive savant.

http://www.theozone.net/Ohio-State/...-for-the-Buckeye-Cornerbacks-and-Kerry-Coombs

When the Buffalo Bills selected Nate Clements with the 21st pick of the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft, it marked the first time in NFL history that a single school had three cornerbacks drafted in the first round over a three-year period. Clements joined Ahmed Plummer (2000) and Antoine Winfield (1999) to complete the feat.

That accomplishment has been unmatched by any school since. On Friday, however, the Buckeyes outdid even themselves when cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley were drafted in the first round, giving them three total -- along with Eli Apple in 2016 -- over just the past two years.

Plenty of teams over the years have produced two first-round cornerbacks in back-to-back years, including Alabama, LSU, Miami, and even Michigan State. This is now the third time Ohio State has done it, which is also unmatched.

But that's only part of the story.

Since Kerry Coombs came to Ohio State to be the Buckeyes' cornerbacks coach in 2012, OSU has produced four first-round picks at cornerback. Along with Lattimore and Conley in 2017, and Apple in 2016, Bradley Roby was selected by Denver in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

That's four first-round picks over the last four years, which -- you guessed it -- is also a first in NFL history.

In just five years as Ohio State's cornerbacks coach, Coombs has now set two NFL Draft records.

The numbers get even more startling when you take a look at what Coombs and the Buckeyes have done compared to the rest of the Big Ten.

In the last four years, Coombs has produced more first-round picks at cornerback than any other Big Ten team over the last 20 years.

Twenty. Years.

In fact, over the last four years, Coombs has produced as many first-round corners as Michigan has over the last 40 years.

And no Big Ten team has produced more first-round corners over the last 40 years than Coombs and the Buckeyes have in just the last four years.

I'll wait until you stop shaking your head in amazement before I move on.

Amazingly, Ohio State might not be done. Recruiting and development are at an all-time high for the Buckeyes and there are players like Denzel Ward, Damon Arnette, and Kendall Sheffield who might be next in line.

It goes even beyond that, as behind them are some of the nation's best cornerback signees in Shaun Wade, Jeffrey Okudah, and Marcus Williamson who should still be in high school, but spent the spring enrolled at OSU and working.

There are other players not even mentioned who should be mentioned, but at this point you get the idea. What is happening at Ohio State over the last few years has never happened before.

The truly remarkable thing is that the Buckeyes might just be getting started.

I'm mobile but Coombs having more 1st round corners than the state up north in the last 40 years? That warms my heart.

Coombs is an incredible coach and has the success to back up his talk. Schiano has been a big help, but Coombs is legit. And we're not even talking about his recruiting, which is off the charts.

I disagree. I never really understood the Coombs angst. It always seemed like misguided criticism, to me.

IMO, @pnuts34 & @ShowMeBuck had the best "takes" about Coach Coombs, at the time. Our corners weren't really playing bad, there was just no cohesion in the secondary. From week to week, they never ran the same defense. We knew he wasn't calling plays, but there were even some saying that he was bad st Xs & Os. It just seemed like people weren't happy with the defense and lumped in everybody that was new.

The vitriol related to Meyer while at Florida was ugly.
Yes, while at Florida! Once Meyer was seen as being a realistic option to be OSU's next HC, not one fan had anything negative to say. Matter of fact leading up to his official hiring rumors were going crazy in a positive way talking about him buying Herbstreits old house, and how our current players would fit in his schemes

OHIO STATE CORNERBACKS COACH KERRY COOMBS RECEIVES $75K RAISE, TO MAKE $500K BASE SALARY IN 2017

The program's cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator is set to earn $500,000 in base salary as part of a new 1-year deal he signed for the 2017 season, according to the contract obtained by Eleven Warriors on Wednesday. Coombs's new salary is $75,000 more than his old one, understandable after seeing Bradley Roby, Eli Apple, Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley come off the board among the first 32 picks of the NFL Draft the last four years.

If You're an Ohio State Cornerback, Kerry Coombs Wants You to Play This Year

Kerry Coombs has his hands full at cornerback as well

Kerry-Coombs-Grandkids.jpg

Last season, Ohio State and Kerry Coombs started a movement. Sure, right now it's a movement that may only be a party of one, but that doesn't lessen its impact to that particular party.

The Buckeyes rotated three cornerbacks last season, and did it very successfully. This spring, they went about replacing two of those corners, as Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley left early for the NFL Draft, leaving Denzel Ward behind as the last man standing.

Four new cornerbacks entered the picture this spring, as freshmen Shaun Wade, Jeffrey Okudah, Marcus Williamson, and junior college transfer Kendall Sheffield all enrolled early. They played well throughout the spring, adding to Ward and redshirt sophomore Damon Arnette, who are expected to be two of the however many starters this season.

What actually could that number be in 2017? How many cornerbacks could see the field?

"All of them," Coombs said this spring. "I’m not kidding you. I’m telling you, by August 31, I truly believe they will all be ready to play, and we will play them in some way, shape, or form if they continue to develop on this path. Denzel Ward is going to play a lot of snaps. Damon Arnette is going to play a lot of snaps.

"Kendall Sheffield is going to play a lot of snaps. Jeff Okudah...Shaun Wade, and Marcus Williamson are going to play a lot of snaps. And Amir Riep, I’m not going to sleep on Amir when he shows up. They’re all good enough, and I’m not going to keep a kid on the bench that’s good enough to play when that makes us better. And that’s what we’re going to do."

Kerry Coombs received a raise of $75,000 ahead of the 2017 football season, his fifth with Ohio State. The salary bump will carry a new title with it.

Really proud Coombs took that next step, and he's doing so on a legendary coaching staff. Been an admirer of his coaching ability since Colerain was smoking Wayne in the playoffs.
