Honest assessment requested here:
WTF is going on? The talent is there, there are playmakers all over the field. Why is the offense so bad? Is Brantley just not as advertised? I mean, I can see a team with a new identity being sluggish out of the gate, but 5 games in, I'd expect some semblance of progress. They just look awful all around.

Think of what that offense would look like if Cam newton hadn't transferred....

Sounds like us and PSU. PSU fans love to claim us as some sort of rival during their "up" years for some darn reason, same with some college football pundits. Our rivals are Illinois and Wishigan.

Ill agree this game features college ball's most premiere of schools, but not a rivalry.
I completely disagree with this, we are 62-30-4 all time against them. Besides the 2007 season where we couldn't get their offense off the field and they were our only in conference loss where is the heat on our side? What? 2001 or 1999 when we weren't any good? Now, I think this team has good talent and might be really good once they get rid of Zook but right now I have little hate for Illinois because I don't feel much for them at all.

Against Penn Stater we are 13-12 all time, the games are usually good and the fans really don't like each other. So why is this less of a rivalry? Because we don't play for a wooden turtle or because we haven't played as many games?

If it's number one well at a base level I care about beating all Big Ten teams equal because it all comes down to the ultimate goal the Big Ten and National Championship.

If it's number two I say quality over quantity.

I'm not sure they're not, their efense notwithstanding. They are explosive as all get-out. Sparty-Vulvarine matchup will determine 3rd best IMO.

If not for Denard Robinson that offense wouldn't be much. I'm still not convinced he's going to make it to The Game in one piece. Besides, a legit defense (which they haven't faced) is going to shut that crap down. SEC is still better than the Big Ten IMO.

m*ch*g*n is not the 3rd best team in our conference. Defense is required for that ranking.

oh yeah, forgot to harp on that statement too lol

Ohio State
Iowa
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Penn State/Michigan/Northwestern is a tossup.
I know that was about our schedule, so which team is better Penn State - no O or Michigan - no D. Maybe Illinois, but you never know which team will show up.

Thing is, they looked explosive last year until they started playing teams with a defensive pulse. All these teams coming up need to do is get a defensive stop here and there and they can almost score at will. This season is setting up just like last year:

Beat a mediocre/bad mid-major - wmu/uconn
Eek out a win against NoD
Beat up on a patsy- EMU/BGSU
Beat FCS team- route delaware state in '09/squeak by umass in '10
barely beat IU to open the B10 slate

Only difference is they front loaded the schedule this year by moving up their fcs opponent to week 3 vice week 7 last year. It's the same team, just a little better offensively, worse defensively. I think they're definatley dangerous with denard, but he's a ticking timebomb injury wise the way they're using him. I think they'll be a game or two better than last year provided denard stays in one piece, but not as good as many think. We'll find out who they really are in the coming weeks, but right now, they're not doing anything appreciably better than last years hot start...

wait hold on. You actually think on a neutral field Illinois will hang with Florida?

THEN, you say that Urban Meyer reaped the benefits of Zooks recruiting?

Meyer has won with plenty of his kids. Nothing he's done at Florida is because of Zook - except the arrests that are still happening according to some Florida fans lol
Zook sucked at Florida but it wasn't because of the players he brought in. I never said Meyer let the ball drop in recruiting but you don't win a MNC in your second year at a school if the players the last coach left suck. I think Zook is doing the same thing at Illinois, I'm not saying they will win an MNC when he leave but they will be dangerous.

Last year, alot of their offensive yardage came from luck plays that happened to work out in their favor. This year, the offensive line is alot better, and they are executing very well offensively. And they aren't turning the ball over nearly as much.

I still think even a competent defense paired with a good offense takes them down, but for different reasons than why they started losing last season.

A lot of quality players on that '06 team were freshman/sophmores. Also, Tressel won his NC with Coopers players. Great coaches (like Tressel and Meyer) can recruit AND coach. Frauds like the Zooker cannot do both.
