Game Thread FIESTA BOWL: tOSU 21, Texas 24 (01-05-09)

Tressel might be borrowing something from Pryor's former high school coach Ray Reitz of Jeannette, Pa. In the Pennsylvania state championship game last year, on the first play the speedy Pryor lined up at wide receiver and running back Jordan Hall lined up at quarterback. Hall then sprinted 58 yards off tackle for the touchdown that started Jeannette's 49-21 win over Dunmore.

Riddle me this.

What does a powerful tailback, veteren senoir QB, and dangerous freshman QB do when they are lined up in the backfield together?

Who would Todd throw the ball to if Terrelle was lined up as a WR?

Would a fake to Robo, Hartline or Sanzo draw the defense to them? Then pass to TP? Then pass to one of the three on the next play?

Would a reverse handoff to TP to Wells from TB be a possible play?

Would a direct snap to either QB or Wells be a possible play? Run or pass by Pryor?

Could the normally very conservative playbook be put aside for one game (a bowl game) to give UT something new to defend?

I can answer the last question with a definite - HELL YES.

I would think that the staff would tend to be more loose than tight after the last three beatings at the hands of top teams (Penn State wasn't a beating). Why wouldn't they be?

You really have nothing to lose at this point. The nation already thinks that Ohio State is the best team in a bad conference and the national media already thinks that Ohio State can't play with the elite teams in college football.

Go out and have some fun and see what happens.

That seems too gimmicky for someone like JT, but y'all would know better than I would. Texas experimented with a formation with both John Chiles and Colt on the field at the same time early in the season. It was pretty worthless so the staff ditched it.

Back in the 2004 Alamo Bowl, he had Teddy Ginn in as QB for a number of plays when Justin Zwick (who was starting place of then-suspended Troy Smith) pulled his hamstring during the first (or second) offensive possession. Granted it was done mainly to avoid burning then-freshman Todd Boeckman's redshirt, but still Tressel ran Teddy out of the single-wing fairly often and with decent results. Hell, Tressel even ran that fake FG against Miami in the NC game, so don't write off anything when it comes to Tressel and bowl games...

The way to victory in this game, is for our Line(im looking at you Boone) deciding that they need to take everything serious, all practices included. If there is a game that would motivate them to live up to there potential it would be this game, a final bowl game that could really go a long way in deciding there NFL future. Alex Boone is going up against one of the best linemen in the nation, and im sure EVERYONE on the team is telling him he has to step up and put in the extra work. Hopefully he does.

I do see Tress doing some trick plays with Ray or Laamar.

I kinda wish we did what the ravens did this year and use 3 Offensive tackles(get big Mike Adams in there) for a big jumbo package for beanie.

Didn't Tress do this a couple of years ago for the Michigan game? I believe he put Marcus Green on the line as a TE.

When Tressel opens up the playbook for a bowl game, it usually involves putting the spotlight on an otherwise unknown role-player. For bowl games not played in 2007 and 2008, Tressel is usually pretty loose and the defense usually plays at or above the level they've played at all year. Who knows, maybe with less on the line than in the past two years, we see that "Jimmy T. rollin' the dice" mentality break out again.

Its neat being able to play Texas in a bowl after recently sharing a series early in the regular season. With the bowl break and the game being at the end of the season and all, who knows how both teams come out playing.

Ginn's injury put a damper on the more "exotic" stuff in 2007. Last year, they showed quite a few different looks formation wise.

Snappy will probably get his wish...if Texas gets the pick of jerseys, you can assume they'll choose their home orange jerseys.

Not sure where you've been for the past three years and the thousands of posts in texas game threads, but they love their road whites.
