Game Thread FIESTA BOWL: tOSU 21, Texas 24 (01-05-09)

What I don't want to see is a run oriented spread-option like WVU. To me, that's a scheme to be used by teams with lesser talent. When a top tier program uses it, they are selling out the professional futures of all non-RB offensive players for 1-2 extra wins a year.
In Michigan's case, it was 4-7 extra losses.

The argument that the Big 12 has no defense may be true. But defenses in other conferences just may only seem to be good because they play bad offenses. This whole argument is nothing but speculation and we will never truly know the answer until the games are played. However, I think it is very flawed logic to just say that Big 12 offenses only seem to be good because they play bad defenses and not acknowledge that Big 10 defenses may only seem to be good because they play inept offenses.

OSU has played a good offense in PSU. I'm not crowning it as a great offense, but it is certainly not inept. Troy is not inept, but not amazing, either. Not saying that Big 10 defenses are awesome, but OSU has played some teams that aren't inept on offense and done very well against them.

I do think that the Big 10 as a whole is not that great. I think MSU is very overrated (:(), I think Northwestern is very overrated. I think the top of our conference is as good as any other conference, however, and better on defense than anything the Big 12 has seen.

I agree with everything you said. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that Ohio State is not a good defensive team. I am just saying that certain arguments are a two way street. I do think this will be an interesting game though because the two supposed weaknesses of the conferences are going against each other. The big 12 Defense vs the Big 10 Offense. I will say one thing about our defense...it held Oklahoma to 14 points in the second half. You don't do that without atleast a solid defense.

I can handle my scotch with the best of them, I think I need 3-4 more to figure out just what the hell you are talking about. Only X-ray could figure this out.... On second thought, this is a job for HL Horn.

I think Texas has a solid defense. I'm on the side of the fence that thinks the offense in the Big 12 is so good that it makes the defenses look awful. I don't think the defenses are great, but with teams that recruit the talent that Texas and Oklahoma recruit, I don't think they're as bad as they look.

So I'm pretty much on your side of the fence if I had to guess. I was just sticking up for the Buckeyes, because I honestly do think they have a very good defense and people will be surprised.

Our offense is my concern..

Your offense is going to be the key to this game. Espescially your offenses ability to sustain drives. If you have a lot of 3 and outs that will cause your defense to tire out. Ohio State must make sure that Pryor does not get put into 3rd and long situations. If Pryor is put in obvious passing downs I would say that gives the advantage to the Texas since the chances of Beanie getting the ball are low. It will be interesting to see how Pryor progresses as a passer with this layoff.

Agree.. if we get the running game going early and don't get away from it, I think the Fiesta Bowl will be one hell of a game to watch.

Good points, though I will point out that there have been many "obvious passing downs" where TP was able to pick up the first with his legs. The games where OSU had the most offensive success were the ones where the defense played its best. Turnovers and short fields (punt coverage has been very good) get the ball rolling for a rout. There hasn't been a lot of consistency for sustained drives, but this game presents a special challenge, and TP has usually been able to raise his game when challenged.

That said, what's UT's MO on offense? Can they sustain long drives, or do they let the field position battle work for them? Considering their offensive output, I'm assuming they're a threat to score on every possession. Also, how often does UT go for (or rely on) home run plays?

That's the MO right there. This is not an explosive offense, just one that's really good at consistently gaining yards and converting third downs. There haven't been too many quick scoring drives this year.

The scoring drives from the OU game were:
10 plays- 57 yards
12-80
6-51
12-89
5-42
8-74
6-80

Every game looks a lot like that.

Not too many home run threats. Neither Shipley nor Cosby can consistently beat guys deep, though Cosby's awesome in tight 1 on 1 situations. The backs haven't really busted many long runs. Colt's pretty conservative about going deep, maybe 5 or so attempts per game over 20 yards.
