Boren has team-first mentality

Midway through his senior season at Ohio State, Zach Boren switched to linebacker when the team suffered a rash of injuries at the position.

Being a captain means putting teammates and coaches above oneself, and during his senior year at Ohio State, Zach Boren did something midway through the 2012 season that showed he always puts his team first.

A player who started 30 games at fullback in his first three-and-a-half years, Boren switched to linebacker once the team suffered a rash of injuries.

?I started at age five playing linebacker, and then, when I went to college, I went to fullback, and then, I went back to linebacker,? Boren said at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. ?Now, I?m going back to fullback. I?ve made a couple switches, but I kind of think they?re the same position. You have to have the same mentality playing fullback and linebacker, and you?ve just got to love to hit people, and that?s what I love to do.?

I believe Bruce Elia was the last Buckeye to play fullback and LBer in one season. Elia was a very good football player.

Early in the 1973 season starting fullback Champ Henson was injured, and freshman backup Pete Johnson was judged unready to take over. Hayes moved Elia back to the offense as fullback. That season Elia led the Buckeyes in scoring (14 touchdowns for 84 points). In 1974 he returned to linebacker and was the team's leading tackler (144 - 74 solo, 70 assisted).

As the NFL conducted the first round of its draft last night, Ohio State’s Zach Boren had no reason to be on the edge of his seat. If he gets picked, it probably won’t be until Saturday when the last four rounds of the seven-round affair are held and likely later that day than sooner.

Boren presented the classic conundrum for NFL talent evaluators. As a fullback during most of his four seasons, he blocked with ferocity and caught almost every pass thrown his way, traits which would suit any team looking for both pass protection and an outlet, check-down receiver. He also stands 5-feet-11.

Then there was his switch to linebacker in the midst of the past season when the OSU defense was in turmoil, in dire need of a calming presence in the middle. He drew on his upbringing as the second son of former Michigan linebacker Mike Boren and as an elite high school linebacker at Pickerington Central, and delivered that stability with leadership and playmaking aplomb. But then, he barely cracked 5 seconds in the 40-yard dash during pre-draft testing.

Boren has proven he is a football player, but NFL teams are likely to get caught up in his measureables. But some believe he could be a special teams presence in the league for years once he gets the chance.

There will be a new fullback for the third year in a row, and the Texans deploy the fullback more than most teams. Following Vonta Leach and James Casey in the role is Greg Jones, a free agent from Jacksonville who is more of a running threat than either but not the thumping blocker that Leach was or the multipurpose threat of Casey. Former Bear Tyler Clutts and rookie project Zach Boren will compete for the 2nd FB roster spot, one which may or may not exist. Boren is an interesting character who played linebacker surprisingly well at Ohio State as a senior and could stick around as one of those bottom of the roster special teams fixtures with great versatility.
