Boren:

Boren will be working out with the running backs on Sunday as a fullback, but NFL teams should be looking at him as a prospect primarily for his versatility.

Boren showed just how versatile he could be in his senior season, when he made a midseason switch to the defensive side of the ball, taking over as the team?s starting middle linebacker. He also has experience playing on special teams.

With that in mind, Boren will likely get extra work from the coaches after going through drills with the running backs, as teams will also be evaluating him as a potential contributor on defense and special teams.

Boren back to fullback at NFL combine

The decision was made for him. Linebacker-turned-fullback-turned-linebacker Zach Boren is now back on offense in the eyes of the NFL.

?To be honest, I didn?t really have a choice,? Boren said.

When he got his invitation to the NFL combine, it was as a fullback. (Technically, it was as a running back, but that?s only because there?s no distinction at the combine between halfbacks and fullbacks.)

?I was happy just to be invited to the combine,? Boren said. ?Whether as a linebacker or fullback, I?m happy to be here.?

Boren grew up as a linebacker and committed to Ohio State thinking he?d play that position. But the Buckeyes had a need for a fullback when Boren was a freshman, so he switched there. Before the Indiana game last October, when the Buckeyes were desperately in need of linebackers, coach Urban Meyer asked him to switch to defense.

Boren didn?t hesitate at the time, but he did wonder after the season whether the move might have hurt his NFL chances. Even if it did, he said he has no regrets.

?I think it all comes back to, I was doing whatever I could at the time to help out the team,? Boren said. ?Whatever NFL teams and coaches think, that?s their opinion.?

Versatility could help Buckeyes? Boren
By Jay Morrison
Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS ?

The NFL has added a new agility drill at the Combine this year ? the flip flop.

That?s what the league is asking Ohio State?s Zach Boren to do, and it?s a drill he knows well.

Boren came out of Pickerington Central High School as a linebacker, but the Buckeyes switched him to fullback his freshman year. Then midway through his senior year, the team moved him back to linebacker.

At the Combine, he?s listed as a running back.

?I came here as a fullback, so I guess that?s what I?m here for,? Boren said. ?I don?t know. Whatever a team wants me to do, I?ll do. Whatever will get me on the field.?

ESPN?s Mel Kiper ranks Boren third among draft-eligible fullbacks, behind Florida State?s Lonnie Pryor and SMU?s Zach Line.

Boren will be on the field today for his drills, and he said he?ll be ready for whatever teams want to see.

?I definitely worked toward the offensive side, but I did some defensive stuff in my training in case when pro day comes teams want me to do defensive stuff. I kind of think they?re the same position. You have to have the same mentality playing fullback and linebacker. You just have to love to hit people, and that?s what I love to do.?

On Sunday, it was quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers. Zach Boren (5-11 238) was the only Buckeye to participate on the day. He ran a 5.0 flat 40-yard dash. He did 25 reps on the bench press, which was good for seventh. His 32.0" vertical was the same as Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, and two inches better than Stanford's Stepfan Taylor.

Boren's broad jump of 109" was dead last among those who participated in the drill. His 20-yard shuttle of 4.44 was the same as Taylor's, and better than Miami running back Mike James' 4.62.

Ohio State players finish Pro Day
Thirteen players from Ohio State's undefeated 2012 season worked out for NFL scouts this morning at OSU's Pro Day, and some Buckeyes appeared to have helped themselves.

There are no "official" statistics kept as each team records its own times.

Fullback Zach Boren didn't know his 40 time but said it was better than the 5.0 time he ran in Indianapolis. Boren even did some long-snapping after the official workout was over, and that position, along with fullback and linebacker, was listed on the information distributed by Ohio State.

On Zach Boren…

* Boren was working out exclusively as an offensive player on pro day, although he also did some long-snapping.

* Boren said he wanted to do LB drills, but his coaches convinced him to just focus on fullback.

* Boren said he was overjoyed to playing linebacker last year, regardless of what impact it might have on his NFL stock.

Zach Boren also ran faster than he did in Indianapolis, where he ran a disappointing 5.0. He didn?t know exactly what his time was yesterday, but he was told it was under a 4.9.
Boren, who switched from fullback to linebacker in midseason last year, did some long-snapping.

Boren adds long snapping to repertoire
March, 15, 2013
By Austin Ward | ESPN.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Just in case there wasn?t enough versatility for scouts to consider already, Zach Boren decided to add some.

There is no shortage of film on what the former Ohio State captain can do at fullback after spending the majority of his career throwing his body around as a blocker and building himself into perhaps the best player at the position in the Big Ten.

While there?s not as much to work with on the defensive side of the ball, Boren also has those six productive games at linebacker to highlight on his resume after his stunningly effective switch in the middle of his senior season.

But after weighing in lighter than he expected and then posting some workout numbers that didn?t meet his standards last month at the NFL combine, Boren went searching for one more way he could perhaps boost his stock and market himself to as broad an audience as possible. And instead of just heading to the draft as a possible two-way player, now Boren can now go a third direction as a prospective long snapper.

Zach Boren performed surprisingly well after a midseason switch from fullback to linebacker.

?I just picked it up,? Boren said. ?It was one of those things where I came back from the combine and I?m like, ?I?ve got to figure out something else I can do with the kind of stuff I put up.?

?I did a little bit in high school, but never in a game. Just kind of a backup guy, and I was listed this past year as a backup, too -- until I went out for a practice and Coach [Urban] Meyer nixed that pretty quick.?
